Classic License Plates

I'm pretty excited about finding out that my '94 Cobra will be eligible for a Classic plate in January. I found out that the registration is permanent - meaning no more annual $36 cost to register. Also I found out that you don't need annual emissions inspection, which is a real nice benefit. Also, with a classic plate, you qualify for much lower insurance rates since you are only permitted to drive the car once per week. However, this rule is not enforceable unless your neighbor reports you. Stated value insurance is much, much less expensive for me through State Farm with a classic plate. I thought I would pass all this along in case some of you were unaware of this.

I have State Farm for my auto insurance. Their classic insurance will not cover your car if it is modified in any way from stock. American Collectors is who I have mine with. I just put $15k of coverage on my 90 Gt and it's $301 per year.

yeah i ended up doing the same thing for my 85. just up the "value" of it to cover the mods. if the car is not frequently driven. classic plates are the way to go! and unless they changed it you should still be limited to drive the vehicle no more than 2500 miles per year

Here is a link the the PennDot fact sheet about classic plates. I will look into the Specialty Insurance companies - they write "Agreed Value" policies, which means there is no dispute over the value of the vehicle at the time of loss. However, it is more expensive. I hope my Cobra will qualify for a classic plate. The car has to appear completely original and I have Cobra R wheels and hood on mine.

15 years is classic

25 years is antique

i find it strange that a 1984 vehicle can qualify as "antique" soon. I just can't imagine anything antique about them except ugly styling.

I bought a brand new '85 GT that was Silver Metallic with black trim. I thought it was one of the best looking cars I ever saw at that time. I recall that was the first V8 car of the 80's that separated the tailpipes to the outer edges of the rear bumper. I had to have one after I saw that. :pinkthumb:

No I def. love me a four eyed fox, but I guess the first thing that came to my mind was someone cruising an 84 Cavalier or Celebrity with Antique plates.

I have seen Cavaliers with them. Never saw a Celeb. yet though. I got classic plates for my 92 LX with no problems. If you apply for the plate the car has to appear bone stock in the pictures. No aftermarket wheels, no stickers in the windows, ect. You have to send in pictures of the front, back, and both sides.

Had a customer who bought an 87 celebrity thathad classic plates on it. It was cherry though with less than 10K miles on it. Still even smelled new.

Just wondering. Stock as in how the car came factory equipped or stock as in genuine manufacturer parts from that model year?

My father has a 67' vette. His sidepipes, redwall tires, and matching wheels are modifications from the original state the car came out of the factory. All three are legit parts from that model year but are not original on the car (I remember endless hours walking Corvettes at Carlisle for parts as a kid; what a pain in the ass).

He does have antique plates and pays almost nothing for insurance. I'm just curious as to what insurance companies regard "modified" as.

superchargers, nitrous,aftermarket wheels, wild custom paint jobs etc.

insurance companies aren't going to do the research to see if dads car originally came with whitewalls,redwalls, or RWL tires:biglaugh:

The main reason I got it was for the emissions exemption, and in two more years I intend to transfer it to an antique tag for the state inspection exemption. And if you're like me and intend to keep the car forever, paying $100 once instead of $36 every year makes sense too.

My usage of the car pretty much fits the definition. It's not a DD and about the only street duty it gets is driving to cruise-ins.

They made me jump through a lot of hoops to get the tags though. I had to repaint the car as it wasn't in good enough condition, and it wasn't a factory color. It also had an after market hood scoop which I had to remove then repaint the hood and put the factory graphics on it.

It had Weld wheels on it which they knew were after market so I had to change them. I did get over on them a little with that one though. I put the wheels from my wife's '87 LX on it for the pictures, and while they weren't the correct wheels for my car, I think the Ford logo on the centers threw them off, and they thought they were ok.

I don't know who at the DMV looks at the pictures, but they can't know every detail about every car, so there is some leeway. I also got away with having a spoiler off a later Mustang on mine, they didn't catch that.

It's kind of funny too that you don't have to submit any pictures of the interior or under hood so whether it's stock in those locations or not they have no way of knowing.

I have my insurance through American Hobbyist and it's dirt cheap, and is an agreed value policy which is needed on older cars.

I'm hoping I can get away with my Cobra R wheels and hood. I might since those parts look exactly like what came on the R's.

I think there's a pretty good chance they wouldn't know the difference. I'm sure they don't do the research to find out what exactly came stock on each car, they just watch for stuff that's obviously not OE.

I think that will depend on who looks at the application at the state. If you want to be sure I would take it off.

They approved my 88 with the windows being tinted. You can always go the route I'm doing with the 90 and just use pictures of another car like you're that is all stock and just photoshop your current plate on to the picture. Gotta love technology!
