87-93 dash vent removal

any tips on how to remove 87-93 dash vents without destroying them?

changed dashes in the one car today and want to swap in nicer vents.
it seems like all those tabs do is break.

I use small flat screwdrivers and be very careful. Its not that bad.

I know in my 94 you just like roll them down and they pop right out.
