Does anyone else here golf? I think it'd be cool to have a Steel City Stangs Golf Outing, if there are enough guys that would participate. Outings are usually scrambles, so you don't have to be good - just go out and have fun.

We could use the proceeds to benefit any organization that Lou or other administrators so choose - even if they go to anything that Lou needs to keep the site up and running.

Myself, I have a handicap of 10.4. If I could putt well, my handicap would probably be a 4 or a 5. I hit 80+% of fairways and 80+% of greens in regulation - however, i 3-putt far too many greens, there's just no excuse. Its something i'd really like to work on, but the only way to get better is practice, and quite frankly, i don't feel like going to a putting green a practicing. My practice comes on the course. I am gradually getting better though - I started this year with a handicap of 20 and play once a week.

What ya guys think?

very nice!

Well, the 90's probably don't count. Handicap is a measure of your potential, so as long as you have 5 or more scores in your calculation, those couple bad ones should have been thrown out and not used in the calculation.

If i recall correctly, its the average of your best 10 out of your last 20 handicap indexes....

my average score is b/w 78 and 80. The worst round i shot this year was a 87 and the best round i shot was a 70. And magically what do you know, i was putting well during the round i shot 70 (par 72). I really didn't drive or hit iron shots any better than i do any other day - just putted better - still lipped the cup on 4 other birdie putts that day.

I just switched to a new putter yesterday though, and although it feels very uncomfortable, i was doing better with it. Hopefully i can begin to bring the scores down a little more with it.

The only thing that stinks about playing reasonably well is that you get serious about the game. I had so much more fun golfing when i didn't give a shit... Drive one into the woods - ah hell, throw another down and blast it into the woods too - the laugh about it and make fun of your friends that are doing the same thing. Now, on the green in 2 is good, but i fully expect to have a makeable birdie putt.

Bish: I think this is a great idea. I'm sorry I totally forgot about the golf PM we exchanged a while back. We have identical handicaps BTW :)

As far as the scrambles idea, its definitely the best way to do this.
Like Bish said, you don't have to be good to play in a scrambles as 4 guys all hit balls and you take the best one. A guy that can drink beer, drive the cart and putt well is what I'm looking for :)
Hope this happens. I'm sick of playing with myself.

i've never organized one, and don't know exactly how much work is involved, but it doesn't need to be a million dollar production.... i've been to ones that didnt have squat, and also been to ones where it was upwards of $5000 for a company to get its name on the flyer that's handed out... But that said, i'd be willing to organize this and anyone that can help out would be awesome too.

However, i know that LastMinuteGolfer.com will sponsor golf outings and send prizes for a raffle. I'm sure that there would be other sponsors to help pay for some of the costs.

I'd say that we would need a good 40+ people to put on something reasonably nice. And definitely don't want more than 72 people. i've been to outings where there were more than 72, and its hard to keep people on track. What cha think?

I used to organize a yearly outing for the HS hockey teamed I coached.
Its not to bad and you definitely don't need 40 people although thats a good number to shoot for.
Pretty much call a few courses, tell them the dates you would like or what they have available and tell them roughly the turn-out you'd expect.
If its 40ish people you can have a shot-gun start where teams start at different holes, otherwise everybody starts on the 1st and its good for some laughs to watch everyone tee off.
Cost really depends on the course and the options you want (hot dog/ beer at turn, steak dinner after, etc.) and if we're doing this to raise money. You could probably do it for $60-80 a man for 18/cart + dinner, but thats back in OH and i have now idea what the rates are around here.
My work schedule can be tight but if you take the lead i can help out.
So, whose interested and what would you be willing to pay?

in addition to what i mentioned above, that lastminutegolfer.com site will actually send out your request to all of teh golf courses that participate with it, and the courses will respond, so it makes the planning a little bit easier.

I edited the original post to include those that are interested and how many people they will be bringing. If needed, I can get together a foursome. If you can get together a foursome - great.... if not, then it will be no problem to put people together into teams.

I think it'd be cool to have only SCS members, but it appears that there may not be enough interest to do this.... I'll leave the thread run for a couple days and we'll see how many members are interested, and then make a decision from there.

Any thoughts on when to do this? How about September sometime or even early october?

then you can just reserve like 4 -5 foursome slots in a row

I agree... However, I think scheduling in late sept. or early october won't be as difficult as other times. Plus, I can always throw out a feeler on that website i mentioned above, and see what kind of openings courses have. I think that we want to make it a saturday for sure though, because i'm willing to bet there are football fans on here that don't want anything to do with golf on a sunday in the fall

I also like the idea of opening it up to everyone like Ray suggests, but the only problem there is, if I open it up to everyone, I think we'd want to have something to benefit other than the SCS board.... Honestly, i highly doubt that anyone that's not a member here really gives a shit about benefiting the board. However, if we make it SCS members only, I think we all care about helping Lou keep the site running.

So, adding MBH, we have 14

If it has to benefit something, it would be nice to benefit the SCS board.

Otherwise, i don't see why it has to benefit anything at all. Nothing wrong with getting a couple 4-somes together and playing a little golf.

Ok, i'll put it on my list...

On a side note, if we only open this to SCS members, its not going to provide a whole lot of benefit to the site.... However, maybe every .01 counts... And i compeltely agree with what John said above about just getting together some folks to play some golf.... A few bucks pitched in from each golfer for beer, pop, water, etc and i think it'd be a good tiem.

I don't know... i suppose we'd have to try to rank everyone, or atleast put everyone into a class.... Or, we could do random drawing - but if two really good players get on the same team, that wouldnt be so fair, now would it?

Once we have a course, etc we'll figure all that out.

I submitted to the golf courses for a date of Sat. Oct 4. I got three replies so far - Conley Resort (up by Mars), Birdsfoot (up by Freeport) and Grandview (North Braddock). Conley is too expensive - they pretty much gave me a form letter reponse. Looks like it'd have to be around $100, and i've heard their course isn't near as nice as some say. Birdsfoot is a spectacular course! we could probably do Birdsfoost for around $50-60, which would cover 18holes and a car, along with drinks, hotdogs, donation, etc.
Grandview responded and it can be done for a decent price as well, but i've read that grand view is extremely hard with a lot of blind shots- and i don't think any of us are looking to have a frustrating day.

I won't touch alcohol if I'm driving the slobra, so it might be frustrating anyway lol

As far as team selection, maybe give the option to put together your own group of guys which doesn't necessarily need to be 4, that way we can keep some friends together. After thats done, maybe we could then take a look at what results. I bet there will be individuals as well as groups of 2 or 3, so it might work out pairing everyone up together the way they want or close to it.

edit: as far as fairness goes, with a field this small its not the main concern because it would be pretty hard to balance every team. FWIW a ringer could probably beat the score of a group of 'bad' golfers. on the flip side, a group of 'bad' golfers that are more in it for fun might frustrate golfers trying to win it.

It appears that we won't have enough to technically call it an "outing," because most courses require 20 people. So we may have to just get some advanced tee times, and then maybe someone could have a cookout afterward. I'd do it, but I live in an apartment. Hopefully we could still have some prizes though! I'm not sure if Last Minute Golfer will still sponsor it, but i'll work on that if/when the final decision is made about how many people we have and where we are going.

Therefore, if we want, we can all get together and just make several foursomes and then hang out afterward... or we can just scrap the idea and maybe setup something for next year that we can plan far into the future.

lol, so I went golfing this weekend.... Everything started off well and I was 4 over par on the 5th hole, I crushed a big drive off an elevated tee box that had a little bit of a draw to it and it took a bad bounce into the sand bunker. 9 shots later I sunk my putt lol.

I can't chip to save my life most of the time, and my putting is sketchy, but I rattled off 3 drives over 315 yards, with the farthest being damn near 340 yards which was pretty good for me. I usually leave the driver in the bag and just hit a 3 iron off the tee, but I thought I'd take off the skirt and swing for the fences a couple times

Course was Elk's Run, I was in Cinci for a wedding. Father of the bride kept the scorecard, I probably shot around a 110 when it was all said and done, but forgot to check the scorecard. Tough course, but very nice. If you're in that area & want to golf, check it out.

I shot 9 holes today in the South hills and shot 36, which was even par... 3 bogies, 3 birdies, and 3 pars... as usual, better putting would have eliminated 2 of those bogies...

Its up to you guys... i don't really care what we do either way....
