I need some help from any of you 2.3 gods. I have my turbo coupe idling almost perfect but its hard without a timing cover. Do any of you know where to put the timing? Hopefully i can get some quick replies and have this done tonight. Ill give you guys some more information if you need it to know exactly whats goin on. Any help would be great! thanks. :goodidea:

To be honest, I'm not sure what you are asking?? Are we talking ignition timing or cam timing?

Cam timing I can talk you through without the cover.

for ignition timing, you need to have SOMETHING on there as a pointer to mark the zero point to work from. Timing is 10 degree's but you need a cover.

I forgot, its cam timing. sorry lol but ive been told to line the cam gear up with the spring tensioner and its pretty close but its not near perfect yet. but if you want to give me a tutorial on how do it without the cover that would be great. just so you know i dont have an outer or inner cover. theres nothing.

thanks!

Okay, 1st know you are going to be moslty screwed when it comes to the next step of setting the igintion timing :D

Anyway, timing belt off

Set crank to TDC. This is real simple as the key in the crank points straight up. Without the belt on, it wont matter compression or exhaust because we wil lset the head parts later.

Set the auxillary pulley to where the rotor points to the #1 terminal on the distributor cap. You want it leading into the terminal or else it will be too far retarded.

Now, spin the cam over to where the key way roughly points down. If you have the valve cover off, the #1 cylinder intake and exhaust will make a shallow vee (both up) when it close.

Now take a string or straight edge from the center of the cam pulley bolt to the center of the auxillary pulley bolt. The index point on the cam pully should be right on that line.

Everythin is set, put the belt on, loosen the tensioner (to tighten it), rotate the engin over two full turn, and all the marks should come back to the right points (crank key up, rotor pointing at #1 and cam pointer on the line between cam and aux pulley bolts.

If you think you have it close and just want to check.............

Put it on TDC on compression (put you finger in the hole as you rotate it). A clue is that the groove in the crank pulley will be level.

Look if the rotor points at #1 terminal on the cap.

Run the string or straight edge between the two bolts, look for the cam mark.

So as i started this, you would now be ready to set ignition timing but have no crank indicator, so you need to geuss :D

By the way, I would personally step back, find both covers, and do it right an be done with it, but thats just me.

X2, we got one close one time without the cover but the cover is needed to dial in crank timing
