i just got laid off work monday! i have 12 years+ experience operating cnc machines and am looking for another job. i did my own set-ups, editing and blue print reading. i was a finish grinder at a bearing manufacturer and worked with tolerances of .001. everythig was cylindrical, which means large bearings(20"-40") were indicated in (center of part with center of table) on a round table and clamped to the table. i programmed the machine to do outside diameters, inside diameters, faces, lips and so much more. also did all sizes of ball bearings and regrinds where you form your wheel size (ball size x1.03) using a hydraulic diamond dresser and take .030 off inner ring race and .030 off outer ring race and add .030 bigger new ball. sorry for so much detail, am just looking for another job!!

I feel your pain. A buddy of mine got let go from Alcoa back in November, he landed a better job, but I'm not as optimistic. The boss flew in and met me last Sunday to tell me he was shutting our Pittsburgh office. Been there for 7 1/2 years and worked my way to the top of the local office. None of us saw it coming, we've been through slow periods every year but he pulled the plug anyhow. Since he's done it things picked up a bit but we're all screwed anyhow.

So anyone looking for Software QA testers let me know. I've got two and a half weeks to sell everything off and find something new, on top of that I get hit with a stubborn cold.

thank god that i had lots of o/t the past 2 years and was able to save some money. we were doing a huge order for general electric. the 3 different size bearings are being used in the large windmills you see outwest and in Johnstown. you know the free power they generate!!!

Best of luck to you guys. Lots of this is going on now and more is sure to follow. We found out 2 weeks ago that my wife's office may be closing very soon. It was communicated thru a very personal and sympathetic corporate email which said...either the Pittsburgh or Philadelphia regional office is going to close...the decision as to which it will be has yet to be made... It amazes me that a company can put out an email like that. You'd think they'd make up their minds and then announce their decision. Unf'n real... :dunno:

I was involved in a project @ SKF in Hanover for making those large bearings about 4 yrs ago. They had just got a huge order at the time.

They have cnc jobs around your level of experience for descent pay.
They offered me a job last year but I turned it down because it was to far of a drive.
The tolerences they work with are much tighter than what your use to but i'm sure you could pick up the difference in time with additional training.
I'm also a cnc machinst at a steel mill in the Pittsburgh area.

s..clever!! i did alot of regrinds that were SKF. I just ground .010 off inner and outer race and installed larger rolls or balls if it was a ball bearing. i believe the ball bearings were angular contact.

where you from? They do CNC work at my new job (Lockheed Martin) and are hiring like crazy.

thanks for the info! i am 20 miles northeast of pittsburgh. i guess that is located in Elmira, NY. i think that if i had to relocate that it would be south. this winter thing bothers me more and more as you get older. haha!! i am a person who just doesn't like to be locked up inside my house!!
