Anybody ever weigh their wheels/tires?

So, I went for a little ride last weekend and just didn't like the way the car felt. Re-cap: I have 17x9 Cobra Rs all the way around with 275/40s.

When I originally put them on last April, I thought it felt a tad slower (no kidding) and I definitely can't get used to fronts pulling me all over the road. Now, the 17x9's look awesome, but I'm thinking about switching back to the Bullitts (stock 17x8's 245/45s) and seeing how it feels. If it's night and day, the Cobras might be for sale??? I'll take function over form any day. :goodidea:

I will weigh them when I do the switch, but I was just thinking if it was ~10 lbs difference (and that being unsprung weight), it could definitely affect the ride/feel/handling.

I wanna say my fronts which are 18x9.5 with 265/35/18 weigh 60 and my rears which are 18x10.5 with 305/35/18 weigh 63. I know that they only weigh two pounds more than the set up I have on the stock 10th rims which have much narrower tires front and rear. I'm not 100% sure on those weights but I'm pretty close as long as the old scale I used was accurate

i know my wheels weigh 33 pounds and my front tires wiegh 27. they have the wieght on tire track. so if i had to guess. id say all together they weigh 240 pounds

probally alignment... i have 18x9.5 with no probelms. if you wanna stop by my work(if your close ) ill throw it up on the alignment machine and see if your out for free

The Ford garage here quoted me $60 for alignment, but if it needs any parts, could go up to $200. Free is much better, LOL... but if it's too far away...

Any time you change the width of the rim, you need to have an alignment. Wider the tire, the more it will follow the groves of the road..

Would that be Huston Ford?? Those guys are real asses there. id go to either John Stuckey or state college ford. Further drive but Huston Ford just doesnt have a friendly staff.

I've never had any problems with them. They all seem to be nice.

A wide tire is going to follow grooves in the road much more than a narrow tire. If it's only happening every once in a while I wouldn't think it was your alignment. It usually happens around stop signs or stop lights where there are ruts in the road. I did notice that some tires are better than others. The F1's that were on my car when I first got it were the worst.

$60 is cheap for an alignment at a dealer. an Alignment bills out 2 hours i believe.

at firestone a alignment pays 1.2 hours it is 59.99 plus tax. I think 60 is average

haha thats crazy! i believe it. most dealers labor rates are over $100. firstone's is $89 but are parts are through the roof!

I had mine aligned last year (probably 400 miles ago) and it was dead on.

Somebody who has one of those Cobra books, let me know, but I recall reading somewhere that Coletti wanted 245s up front and 275s out back just because of this reason, but Ford won out putting 275s all around for ease of rotation. They didn't want their customers crying because they had to keep buying two sets of tires or something???

no that's why I'm sayin maybe my numbers are off. cause if my rims weigh 11 lbs less, they should weigh at least a little bit less with the tires on not MORE! even though the rear tires are 305's, but still how much more could it be?

I have to keep my ProStars tied down or else they float away :D

I ran around all last summer on those wheels, skinnies up front, and the Hoosier QTP's on the rear. Car actually rode / drive nice (as long as you drove like there were skinnies on the front). Toward fall I threw the Waffle stars / 225/50/16's on it and it drove like ass. I could feel those wheels on the front every time the steering wheel moved. Not a direct comparison to your change, but an extreme example.

Well, the official bathroom scale weight of a 17x8 Ford Bullitt with a Nitto 555 245/45/17 is 50lbs on the nose.

I'll report the weight of the Cobra R's and 275s on Saturday if I don't incur hypothermia or frostbite.

If they're somewhere near 60lbs, I would consider that a significant amount of added rotating, unsprung mass. 20%. :rolleyes:
