View Full Version : Project Rusty our 84t-top coupe build ...

Been on this build since Dec. 1 2008, would like to share it with all of you. It will take a while to get it caught up to the present time. We started out with this car that we bought last spring. A 1984 factory t-top 5.0 coupe.
The name Rusty and the fact that the key chain was from a salvage yard will be of significance later in the thread. here's what it looked like when we got it home...

Doin' a really nice job so far. Seems like the bulk of the rust was/is in areas that are reasonably repairable.

We firgured a good fix for some of the rust in the rear was to mini-tub, also after seeing Biminilx's car with that great stance, we knew that was what we wanted. So I went with Weld Craft, good price and I liked the way they did their sway bar...

We knew the passengerside quarter was bad so out in Joliet at the NMRA/NMCA event we found this awesome mustang junkyard called Encore MPW (unbelievable), he had a beautiful back half of a coupe so at 11:00 pm Sat. night we cut out a quarter, went the next day loaded it in the back of the L. I was pretty nervous about doing this, since i never did one before, but i think it turned out o.k.

Since it was an 84 we were stuck with a 7.5 rear, but was able to find one on the corral nearby and pretty cheap. So it got reconditioned, had some 3.27 gears out of a Bullit I had worked on for some one, so we threw those in...

Don't be laughing at this next pic. I stole this idea from another build thread. Looked around and found everything I needed to build( De Plane, De Plane). Looks strange but works great to move the heap around. Got the mudding and sanding done, and shot some primer.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/trbofox/rusty%20build/mar14primer005.jpg
tried a new product that was recommended by the paint supply store. It is a direct to steel filler, primer, sealer, and after i shot it I was pissed. It looked like crap! Once we started sanding though, we realized how amazing this stuff was. It made my bad body work look amazing and it sanded out to feel like silk. Hopefully the paint will look great over it.http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/trbofox/rusty%20build/mar14primer007.jpg

Did all the work on the other car except painting the body. I am going to paint this one myself and try to save 7K, we'll see. If I screw it up, I can always have someone do it. Will probably hire out the hood though since it will have our trademark flames underneath and a flat black center.

Yes I work on it everyday, since there's not much going on in the vineyard. I have 900 hours in it right now. Definately fast tracking it, would like to bring it out in 2009.

Thanks for the encouragement.
Took delivery of the hood we decided on. originally julie wanted to do a stockish hood, which was gonna make it challenging for me with what i want for a motor combo. Julie found a thread over on foureyed pride of this new 84-86 Boss inc. hood, not a stock look, BUT... the most beautiful, sexy, and best quality hood we have ever seen. They come in this dark gray color which was awesome cause it is exactly the color that we are doing the center of the hood, the sail panels, foureyes, grill and rims, and it looks sweet with wild strawberry.

Well some more progress. i have been on doors for days and days, I hate bodywork. The driverside door ended up needing to cut the one hinge off and reweld 1/2'' different and now everything lines up.
After 10 hrs of sanding the front bumper cover we made the call, 12 calls to find a replacement. Glad we did cause this one is real nice, it's a reconditioned oem Ford from J&J bumpers in Rhode Island, they had 1 and it was the LX. No one is able to get the 83-84 all said it is no longer available, so we were lucky. This one is scuff and paint:)

I was able to get the paint supply to make me some vinyl single stage paint in this dark charcoal that we are going with for trim, sail panels, grill, headlight buckets, center of hood etc. Makes life alot easier than spraying color and flattened clear on all this small stuff. it looks incredible here is a pic of the sail panel
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/trbofox/rusty%20build/sailpanelweatherstripping005.jpg
Wheels came, they are beautiful, BUT 9'' on the front with UPR K-member and coil overs won't work. The offset seems pretty good, but they will have to be narrowed. These OE wheels only come 9'' or 10''. The gunmetal is gonna tie in with the dark charcoal accent pieces.

On the front wheels, if you have to narrow them one of the 10s narrowed to 8" might be cool to keep a lip the same front and back. Just a thought, I like the wheel choice and those 335s will be sick.
I like how you're doing all the trim the same, will look very good.

Ran into a snag with the matte finish clear paint. This is what we ended up with, yet the test panel sitting right besides this stuff was fine. Turns out the place we bought the paint sold us a product from PPG that had been recalled. Talked with the PPG rep and he said they had so much trouble with the product being unreliable that they pulled it and the place should not have sold it to us.

Hope to see both cars soon, you and your wife are gonna have some bad@ss coupes!

Another T-top car is always welcome; expecially a rare coupe. Very nice build. A neighbor of mine converted a 84 hatch to EFI and kept the factory dash and gauge cluster. Very tricky wiring but he managed to get everythign working as if it was factory. Good Luck. Hope to see you in Wexford Church Cruise this summer.

Thanks. Yes that is the goal.
Was having a real problem with the amount of money they want for a new headliner backer board, especially since 75% of it gets cut out cause the t-tops. Went to the local vinyl sign shop and they had this stuff that is super compressed foam. It looks and feels like plastic. It is water resistant, and is able to be scored and can be heated with a heat gun to make it conform. So I used the old board for a pattern, cut it out with a hand jigsaw, scored the points that I needed it to bend, stuck it in the car and used a heat gun on it to conform it, and bingo new headliner board. This stuff comes in a 4X8 foot sheet, and I bought half a sheet or 20 bucks. Gonna use it for the trunk and the door panels as well.

Fabbed up a panel for the trunk to hold the MSD box, fuses,a breaker box, the selenoid and the modual for the fuel shut off. This is going to give me better access than the way I did it on the 93 , in the fender.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/trbofox/rusty%20build/headlinertrunkcontrolunit005.jpg
I got the battery cables and wires run through the car to the front and was able to fish em through the in floor subframe, worked out pretty slick.

Thanks, yea every step is one closer. Gonna run it through the tranny tunnel. Hope the wires are long enough.
When I just did mine, I lengthened about 50 wires up front and ran them through the cowl to the left inner and the FI harness, I came out right on the firewall down where the curve is to go to the tunnel. I used a nice 2" rubber grommet I swipped from a T-bird. Poked a 1/2 hole in the center and pulled the ten pins and distributer connectors through. With the engine in place now, you cant see anything. Hardest part was getting the nerve to drill the hole.

Good idea. That's what I was wondering around the filter also. its a bummer when stuff is so close like that. I had some issues also with my Intercooler piping running real close to a few things. Syleast when we are making our own stuff we can cut to fit. Keep up the great work!!

I have looked at them, what was of interest in his is how the tab on the alternator itself changed the angle of the rod adjuster. I have mine done now with a rigid bracket, but will make one like that next time I'm playing around. I've got some goofy angles (among other things goofy).

No, we've had it since 2002, It has some nice peices that we had done by Ron Robart@ Fox Lake, NA, though. Alot of fun to drive, although it doesn't get driven alot. it has 20K original miles, and all the stock components to put it back to stock.
We got the door panels back and are very happy with them, they still have a stock feel, but match the seats better.

Yea, this powdercoating thing is pretty cool. We are limited on size by our oven, although that might be changing too. So far things have turned out looking really nice, and we have tested for durability as well. we have a couple of sandblaster units, that's key. There is so much you could do with it. our plan was for a non-bling motor, so this seemed to be a good way to go. Would like to do some wheels.
I like the black chrome :awsome:

We wanted to make the 79 tailights LED sequential, that was kinda why we picked em up. We hunted around online and found this company North west Mustangs LLC, and they make light setups for classic mustangs. We took a chance after looking at pics and decided that the 68-69 ones might work, lucky for us they do, and what a slick setup.

Well, we have had our share of issues. Was in a wiring mess for a while until we figured out that the XPI timing lock box was faulty, took out all the senders, the TFi and the stator. Got that ironed out, really wanted to run that lock box as it has worked out well on the other car, but afraid to try another. the tranny is in

The car is running but the stock computer is hating the 60# injectors. puts into a flooded mode on start up, once the mass air kicks in the air/fuel is great. Got someone to burn me a chip for the start up, and it worked to start the car but at idle it makes the air/fuel go to crap. The tuner is going to try to modify the chip, dunno. We just wanted to be able to put a few easy miles on the new motor and make sure all the mechanicals and electrical is good before we get into tuning or getting some kind of a tuner. We were able to drive in and out of the garage, that seemed huge. the exhaust sounds amazing. Here are a few pics of it in natural light.

No room up front, a Ford Superduty cooler with a fan is going above the gas tank. I have minitubs and a stock style tank so there is a large gap between the tin work and the passenger side depression on top of the tank. Also have a small inline cooler going in the return line for overkill :)
I hope it works out for both of us.
What stall?

Just a few updates. The part about someone burning a chip just wasn't working, it seem to help one thing then mess up the next. Someone suggested we should go with Anderson Motorsports and their PMS. It took 2 days to arrive, 45 min. to install one phone call to Rick Anderson, and 2 min. to enter a crankng fuel value in and ..... gues what? IT WORKED. We faxed Rick our worksheet that same day and the next day he had a start up program ready for us to put in. This thing was far easier to use than we feared, and that night we went out for our first drive.
Getting it aligned tommorow, just a few pics...
