Rental car policy at work

So we got a company-wide email telling us that we must use our personal cars when out at the jobsite. We will get 55 cents/mile to and from the jobsite, but nothing more. How goofy is that? Will that 55 cents pay for my car to be cleaned when getting back (our sites are usually hella-dirty)? Heaven forbid I get in an accident, and kill someone. That would be on my insurance. Blah.

Anyone else deal with this?

That sounds to be inline. With my company, If you elect to drive your car instead of paying a weekly deductible and driving a company car, they only reimburse us 48.5 cents a mile up to 17,500 miles.

Well let me add more to this. I am a mechanical engineer, and only travel to the site during comissioning. This policy is for all the engineers mostly.

yep do it daily. .55 a mile is the standard govt rate. i buy a beater to use strictly for work as i rack up a few hundred dollars in mileage monthly.

We are encouraged to use rental cars first, but get the Gov't rate if we use personal cars (currently .55/mile). We have pretty good Corporate rates and typically take a rental for anything beyond 2 hours drive.

It's actually more of a PITA to get a car at times as the counter hours suck, then add in an hour each way for gas, pick-up / drop off, etc. Although the policy is to use rentals, we typically look at the end cost for the trip with mileage versus rental fee / tax / gas. etc.

We typically also use one way rentals in and out of Pittsburgh Airport as it's cheaper than milage and parking if you will be gone more than three days.

WHen I had my 96 F150 beater I loved driving to the job sites....in 8000 company miles it was free. :)


I agree with Bob...it's a hassle renting a car anyway...but our policy is we can rent one if we want...or get gov rate for use of personal car.

In the future i'm going to take a taxi/limo to the airport instead of leaving my vehicles there if going for a long time...it's cheaper for the company and I don't have to worry about door dings.
