OK so I'm buying an F-150 come hell or high water in the next 7-10 days. How bad is the 4.6 in a F-150 supercab. Is the 5.4 worth the extra loot? Not gonna be towing anything more than maybe a few motorcycles around but don't want a DD that's a dog either.

P.S. I know what you're gonna say Koval but I'm a dumb stubbron mofo.

Thanks!!!!

I know where you can get a good one that's about to be a recent lease return.

Luckily Carfax doesn't show number of dumb things done in a car.:hyper::hyper:

6 in one hand and 1/2 dozen in the other.. it seems to me that the 4.6 trucks struggle a little more to get around, the 5.4 trucks are great, i have an 2000 f-250 and it is great, it get 12-14mpg and wil haul about anything.. I like the short bed step side reg cab f-150s, those arent bad at all with a 4.6..

i aways say bigger is better go 5.4 and its been my experience that the bigger motors don't have to try as hard and end up getting better millage

My dad has a crewcab 5.4 with 3:73's and we pulled a 16ft inclosed trailer with 4 garden pulling tractors. i mean it got it there...but very slow it was a ral bad workout... if you plan on towing forget the gas trucks. i pull a 18ft trailer with 5-6 tractors on it...and its like towing a 4x8 with a pushmower you barely notice it.

Mike, I had a 5.4 in my 03 F150 FX4 4x4. It had good power but was hard on gas. It did however pull a 7by14 enclosed trailer behind it all the time. I'd go with the 5.4 if i were you.

Thanks guys, I agree the 5.4 is probably the way to go. Believe me if a diesel F-250 wasn't massive overkill for me I'd probably go with that, I've always wanted a turbo haha.

Got a blank check from my credit union burning a hole in my pocket!!!!

Go buy a Cummins truck. The new 6.4 fords suck. Course even the 6.7's do with all the egr shit. People have been reporting 2+mpg better just by removeing that garbage. I know where there is alot of nice r-titled ones for sale lol.

haha you guys are too much! I'd say the 5.4 Mike, just in case you ever need that little extra power. What is the difference is MPG between the 2? I'd imagine it can't be a huge difference. I know in between the chevy 4.8 and 5.3, the 5.3 actually is better. Have you driven both? if not, that alone may be the deciding factor.

If your only gonna be towing bikes a few times a year, I certainly wouldn't making towing one of your deciding factors. 2 bikes and trailor, maybe around 2k pounds or so?

Some weekends I tow 5 quads, 4 in a trailor, 1 in the truck bed, I still average 18-18.5 towing, granted I usually never go above 70-75 mph.

mike just to give you a heads up my 02 f-250 crew 7.3 only gets 21 empty driving around town, it might not be as much over kill as you think and the turbo sound makes it all worth while.

I haven't thrown out the F-250 yet, I'm on a short timeframe though as my cobalt has to be turned in 10 days. I would love me a turbo. Thanks for all the help homies.

I have an F250 superduty with a 5.4 in it. I am very happy with it, decent power and I have managed a best of 17.5 MPG in it with 33" procomp xterrains on it. It's is no race car, but it isn't a turd either.

Drove an '09 STX 4.6 3V with 3.73's today and I'll tell ya what it was pretty damn close the the 5.4 with 3.55's

My 08 F-150 has the 5.4 w/3.55. I get 12.5-16.5 MPG. Winter mileage sucks. Its in the 15.5-16.5 range now. I think the 5.4 is the best option. Better torque/hp. Mileage is rated about the same/

The Lincoln has the 3V 5.4L and it won't get out of its own way, although it does tow very well. Can't imagine how much of a pig it would be with a 4.6L.

I've got an 05 reg cab/long bed with a 4.6. I've loaded this thing down with building material, rocks, scrap, moved everything from one house to the next and it's been fine. My biggest complaint is the 3.55's, great for the highway but horrible on hills. I've thought about doing 3.73's, I'd rather go 3.90 but it depends on how long I'll keep it. Also never had a injector stick or a plug pop out

My harley truck has a 5.4 in it, and its slow as all hell..... i can't imagine what it would be like if it had a 4.6..... however, if the 4.6 offers significantly better fuel mileage, i'd take it! Although, I don't haul anything more than a 220lb motocross bike in my truck!
