View Full Version : Fixing my Stang
New fender from Laurel Mountain. Hope to have fender in color and cleared friday. So far I hit it up with grease/wax remover and scuffed up with red scotch-brite pad. Got 2 nice coats of light gray primer/sealer on it. Going to wet sand wednesday evening. Going to try and get hood block sanded and smoothed friday and under primer. Wet sand it saterday evening and if all goes well in color sunday. :hyper:

Leave the boo boo fender on for Saturday and come racing, Mr. .003 reaction time. :D :sticktonge:
Wish I could but going to a wedding. Don't worry Chuck I'll be back head hunting next weekend.
On another note. I went and picked up my gravity feed HVLP paint gun(my dad's fn leaks like a stuck pig) and was also going to buy a small detail gun. Digging around storage for my gun I find a nice spanking new gravity feed detail gun I forgot I bought :) Now if I could just remember where I put my paint mixing jars and measuring cups.

Looking good Ed. Don't put that paint on too thick, it adds weight :D Won't recognize it if you paint the hood ;)
Well I got about nothing done friday except wet sand primer. Mother nature provided enough water. Hit up fender with 400 and got careless at a few edges and got it to metal quick. Saterday was a waste with going to wedding. So took care of edges today. Wet sanded with some 600 and shot 2 coats of color. Let color sit and hit with some 1500 and shot 2 coats of clear. I'll wet sand clear tommorrow and probably hit it with another coat. So far looks to be a close match so I'm happy. I think hood will have to wait till next weekend when Juniors race is happening at PRP.
My make shift paint booth using sheets and garage door track :rotflol:

I'm gonna do the hood in 2 weeks.
Ok got clear all wet sanded and now it's really smooth. Anyone recommend any particular compound(s) to polish? Type of pad? I need to buy a buffer as all I have is a low speed orbital.

Harbor Freight has a decent buffer/polisher on sale, plus if you sign up for their emails they normally send out 10-20% off coupons. I picked up my compounds (Meguiars) and some additional pads at DLK.

Ah that's perfect. I'll be going right past the store in Pleasant Hills tommorrow.
Well fender is done and just needs put on. Spent about 3 hours on it and I ended up polishing by hand mostly and must say it came out better then the original. Used the Mothers 3 stage system. Stage 1 with orbital buffer about three times. Which brought out a nice shine. Did the stage 2 (sealer/glaze) about twice by hand and one coat of the stage 3 (carnauba wax). New emblem and hood/fender bumper in place. No pics since it got dark when I finished.
Gonna try and get on wednesday :hyper:

Hey Ed, wanna paint the Cutlass??? :D
Hey Ed, wanna paint the Cutlass??? :D
Chuck thats a winter project. Car is gonna need some love but would look real good with all the chrome trim back on car with a nice color. Your options are wide open with a black interior.
Got fender on car tonight. I had more trouble getting those stupid plastic push pins out to drop fender liner down. That and one lower bolt snapped off. Hit it with liquid wrench but didn't help. So when I have time I'll drill it out and replace that one bolt. I didn't even need to pull front bumper or headlight panel. Went on with no trouble and is well made. As it lined up perfect and door seam gap is perfect top to bottom :)
Couple pics but with flash as it got dark by time I was done. I'll take few more tommorrow in the sun.

Looks great Ed. Nice work!
And we can make a winter project! Do you hang quarters?
Bob, just because I may get paint someday, doesn't mean I'll make it shine! :D

Did quarters on my '72 when I had it along with outer wheel houses. The hell it won't shine :bitchslap:
Ok here we go. Pics out in the sun after giving the poor car a good cleaning. After seeing it in the sun I'm very happy.
