As many of you know, I tried to sell my cobra not long ago. This is my 3rd Terminator and I have always wanted a Lightning. I had a deal in place to trade my car for a sweet L + cash. The owner backed out and when I couldn't sell my car to get the cash for the L, I just decided to keep her! I have received some public and private sponsorship for the build and started working on the car a few weeks ago! Originally I wanted to keep it an Eaton, 6-speed, IRS street/stip car for a year or so. I just cant bring my self to go drag racing with that silly boat anchor in the rear so I am in the process of building a nasty 8.8! I will post up as much as I can on the build as I go, going to Team Z Motorsports for an 8.50 chassis in the next few weeks!

Quick Time supplied me with one of their sweet bellhousings! Big props to Ross and the crew @ Quick Time for helping out with the car and making a top notch product! Last week I installed the 26 spline input shaft along with the Quick Time bellhousing, RAM clutch and flywheel. Here are a some pics...

I'm not set up to weld the tubes and do the 9" ends the right way, so I sent the housing down to Bud @ Continental Competition...724-439-4189. Bud is a good dude with a nice setup and does top notch work! After I got the housing back from Bud I had it blasted and finished cleaning her up a bit tonight. Wolfpack Speed
08-28-2009, 12:44 PM
how about taking the rear apart and powdercoating the center?Lou said the same thing, that certainly is an option. Just kind of depends on what the finish on the front wheel is like in person and how the powder coated rear center piece would turn out.

Hey Mike, i think the black wheels would be great looking on a yellow car.. black & gold baby!!! I think with the right wheels or combo you are right. It's actually the look and pictured finish of the black weld I posted a photo of that got me going. That wheel is so damn sweet looking, I have to have it on the car!

That's exactly what I was thinking Troy, but I'm kinda partial :goodidea:

I'm not sure I'd go with just black fronts, it might look like you're running spare tires up front if they're the only black accents on the car. If you're going to do black, get some vinyl letters for the bumper and some vinyl for the tail lights to help pull everything together

Did some quick work for ya Mike:

It's in the hands of the man Dave @ Team Z. I am working my tail off to have the chance but my guess is the car wont be ready. Since I am doing more then I originally planned and still slammed at the shop, I don't mind waiting till next year. Ed, its because he didnt do a continuous bead, he kept hitting the trigger, like a stop/start/stop/start/stop/start you cant make a mig gun weld look like that unless you start/stop it over and over, plus you can look closely at the beads and see tiny little dimples... that explains why there is no deep penatration where discoloration would be evident... hope that helps..:goodidea:

Tim,

You are correct, I did start and stop. That is a very hard area to prep and lay a good and continuous weld. You know where I got the idea from? Dave Zimmerman @ Team Z Motorports. I was there a couple weekends ago and noticed thats how they weld up the boxes at their shop. Dave was kind enough to explain to me why and I wanted to try this on my car first, before attempting to do so on a customers car.

In response to...

The dimples you are referring to are from when I let off the trigger, not from contamination. Do you know what the discolored metal 1/4" out on each side of the weld is from? Heat & Penetration, AKA a good weld. See attached photo... hope that helps..:goodidea:

sounds like you guys are saying the same thing :goodidea: :beerchug:

really dumb questions I should be embarrassed to ask: what do torque boxes do and why do they need upgraded? I'm guessing that they have something to do with chassis stabilization (like chassis twisting and flexing) but I wasn't sure and a quick google search just brought back results for installing new ones etc.

The torque boxes are where your control arms mount and are only spot welded in. Once you start making the car hook with tires and upgraded control arms they start taring apart at the spot welds as they are the only holding points. So, you weld the entire seems like Mike did in his pic's to greatly strengthen it. They also have plates you can install and weld around to make it thicker to handle more abuse. Only, dumb question is one not asked. :goodidea:

You know Mike, this is actually great news for me to hear, you know as well as i do how hard those torque boxes can be to weld, especially on an older fox that has seen its far share of rust.. I feel that doing it this way may turn out to be a much better/easier way of doing it. The biggest problem i run into is while trying to maintain a solid bead the panel itself gets very hot and starts to melt the undercoating and paint in the surrounding area and it runs into the weld.. I am glad to have read all of this..

Thats how I took it, no big deal either way.

theres a thing called to much heat where the weld will be there and look ok but all the heat made the area around the weld weak and it tear away from the weld

Bingo!!!

Definitely not a show car! Most of the underneath was actually already painted black by one of the previous owners. There were still yellow spots so I just hit the underneath with brake cleaner, then I 2 coated it with some rusto spray bomb! Just wanted it all 1 color and wasn't worried about how it would turn out. Other then a few minor runs and dirty spots, it actually turned out pretty nice!

Standard output C4 solid axle can use the fox body aluminum drive shaft with a gt companion flange.

An 8.8 can live under a 1,200 rwhp car with no issues with the aftermarket that exists for them.I don't disagree with you but the car will come out on a built motor that more then likely will have a big twin screw. Without the option of a pro gear for the 8.8, r&p's start to become a weak link and I am sure I will be hitting the tires pretty hard! When I swapped in the 3.55's after the c4 in my old car, the 4.10's had some missing teeth! The auto doesn't shock the parts and tires as hard but with the help I am getting, I just want to do everything right the first time

Thanks guys! Car is at Team Z now, not sure when I will get it back and really don't care to be honest! Busy at the shop and it is nice to have it out of my hair! I decided to have them mini tub the car, their tin work is so nice and they do a sweet job of tying everything together, just didn't make sense not to do it now! It will be an 8.50 cage but I am having them construct it with some of the initial bar work for a 25.5. chassis. This will make it a much more affordable and easier upgrade for down the road when I am ready! I asked Dave to take some pictures along the way, I will post up some updates when I can. Discovery channel was starting to setup up for a chassis build off while I was there! Look for my turd in the background when the program airs!

For anyone looking for this kind of work, well worth the trip out and back as well as the money. Dave is a great guy, knows his stuff and their work is really unbelievable. We are also a dealer for his suspension components if any of our in shop customers are interested.

Thanks!

Mike

[QUOTE=Viper_ed;212809 An 8.8 can live under a 1,200 rwhp car with no issues with the aftermarket that exists for them.[/QUOTE]

Must be some soft leaving 1200 rwhp buggy. It's not the amount of power in some cases, it's the application of it. There are examples of grenaded 8.8's with rwhp #'s in the 450-470 range. Even less than that in other instances, e.g., 363 rwhp @ 2,950 race weight. In addition, the ease of gear swaps and the ratio selection are in favor of the 9", by far.

man i don't know 9 inches are so heavy , how much you taking off the rear for the mini tub mike 2 inches ?

I don't know from experience but I find it hard to believe that with all the light weight housing and hardware options for the 9" that you can't build one considerably lighter then your typical 9"? Possibly lighter then an 8.8 when it is all said and done? I guess we will find out! Not sure what I am going to do with the housing width just yet...

bgblockelcamino
10-25-2009, 10:10 AM
physically a 9 inch can be lighter with fab style housing but take more power to turn them over a typical 8.8. but the gain in strength outweighs the loss in drag due to gear set.

Wolfpack Speed
10-25-2009, 10:17 AM

burntire
10-25-2009, 06:05 PM
8.8 is a weak link. I have bent mine which is now braced up. Every set of gears is nice and quiet during the breakin. Then they get noisy after I hit them with slick launches. I had one set that was chipped. I am not the only one other there that has had issues with the gears not holding up. I use a solid pinion spacer.

A 9" has a 3rd pinion bearing instead of 2 like the 8.8. I think that is where my problems arises. There is not doubt that something is flexing under load with the 8.8.

Then you get into the talk of the weight and robbing power with a 9". I would think that a pinion that is not binding due to the additional support would be more efficient.

When I replace my 8.8 I will get a Fab9 Housing with the anti roll bar and brace. Nodular Case, 3.50 gear, 35 spline axles, and the new wavtrac differential.

It may weight a little more, but I will never worry about crap exploding again.

If I was doing one for a drag car I would consider 40spl gun drilled axles with a lightweight spool and a pro-gear gear set.

I have many 9” setups laying around if you want to take one to compare. Buy light weight spool, sheet metal housing, and aluminum 3rd member.

I just don't have the time, experience or tooling to tackle this part of the project. I wanted it done right the first time by a proffesional who specializes in this kind of work. This car is going to be fast and it needs to be safe. Besides, it's nice not having it in the way at the shop:sticktonge:

Got my rear wheels, what does everyone think? I am going to replace the wheel center bolts and washers with black anodized pieces, I think it would look better that way. I got the fronts and tires too, but they are on the other side of the state with Jon, went with the black front posted earlier...

I was going to use the Rigid Race Car mounts that I had in my old car but they probably wont work with the through the floor subs. I am going to make a set anyways but Dave @ Team Z has a nice setup that he will incorporate for me...

Very nice Mike, lookin great!
I like the idea on the wheel bolts too, I was thinking that and then read your post.
My car may be done with the auto in that same time frame, I may ride out with you but I'll give you a ring to discuss the plan.
