View Full Version : SonofaBish's New Home Build thread.....

Well, hopefully within the next week or two, I will start a new build of another kind... Yesterday afternoon, I closed on the mortgage to build my new home. I have to wait for the bank to order a pre-construction inspection of the land, after which my contractor will be able to begin excavation...
Below is a picture of the exact home I'm building... The only difference will be that I will not have all the windows shown in the basement - probably just a french door and a couple windows. Its different than the pics i posted a couple months ago in a thread, but that's because I liked this place better. I will continue to update this thread with pictures over the next 4-5 months as the house comes together...

here's a quick pic of the floor plans... on the upper-right of the 1st floor plan, you can see where the garage will be - I just didn't include it in the snapshot... its just your basic 2 car garage with 10' doors, and plenty of room to roam...
*The master bath will not be setup like that - i'm not 100% sure yet how it'll be setup - that'll be a decision made probably on the spot ...

Damn! That thing is huge! I recently just worked on a house very similar to that without the two side peaks. It was beautiful inside and very expensive!
Also, which I'm sure you know already, but to check how good the builders are you can see the size gaps between the logs near the bottom but you gotta do it before they fill it with log jam. Each side is different though so check both sides! And congrats!!!!

Its actually not going to be a log built home... its going to be a traditional stick-built place, with the log siding to give it that look..... there's no way i could afford a truly log built home.... lol

How much property you get?
its 2 acres, entirely wooded.... initially, we're only going to clear enough area for the foundation and a small bit of yard... then over time I will continue to clear out the small trees to make a good size yard... I'm planning to leave any large trees in place - so hopefully i won't get annoyed by having to cut grass around them...
The property is actually pretty perfect for the house... I plan to have the house sitting about 200-220 feet off the road... a small creek splits it in half, with the left side being perfectly flat, and the right side having a very slight upslope... the house will be on the right side, overlooking the creek valley, etc.... also, i should be able to hide the house pretty well from the road... and there will be a motocross track in the back yard, jumping over the creek in many places.... oh wait, n/m, that's not happening! :rotflol:

Oh I gotcha! Haha the guy who built it was the owner of the company and it was close to 750k!
I personally would spend the money elsewhere than what this guy did but to each his own.
The house you're building is amazing! You gotta be a proud man bish? I sure would be! That is awesome!!!! :highfive:

The thing with building a home is over time you will be what you have in it or even more.. houses only go up in value...

Scott - i think there is plenty of riding just up in behind where my property is... As with all places, i'm sure there's people who's feet i'll be stepping on, but i'll also be sure to ask permission to ride anywhere i go around there.....
Plus, i know of lots of other place that are within 15 mins of where i'm building the house, so there will be lots of riding!! You'll have to come up a lot!

I'm not sure where you're getting your figures, but I had 5+ contractors price it out.... Only one guy was kinda outrageous at 300K.... i didn't even ask him to bring it down, as he was well beyond anyone else...
Furthermore, I'm saving myself a TON of money by doing a lot of work myself .... The house is approx. 2300 sq. ft. not including the basement, which will not be finished at first.... I will get there down the road a couple years... Even if i weren't doing anything myself, most contractors will build a stick-frame home for $100-110/ sq. ft... However, with me doing a lot of work, i will be building for a bit less than that
like i had said, its not a real log home, which would be much more expensive...
SonofaBish
09-04-2009, 09:53 PM
Its a pretty simple build... as you can see from the floor plans, there are very few walls on the first floor, with the only interior walls being the ones for the master bedroom and laundry room.... the second floor is pretty basic as well, with 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom that will be "roughed" but not finished at first.... "roughed" meaning that all of the plumbing will be run, but no fixtures will be put in there...
How good the place looks will be entirely dependent on the finishing touches such as the wood floors, kitchen cabinets (being built by the Amish), etc, etc... The large cathedral cieling in the living room will have tongue and groove on it, but the remainder of the walls will be plaster
At the current moment, i'm not coming up with any other details, but i'm sure there's tons!

The windows are quite expensive, that's for sure! But they weren't as bad as I had thought, since they don't have any "movements" in them - cranks, sliding parts, etc...

approx. 2300 sq. ft..... once I finish the basement down the road, it'll be quite a bit more than that, but that's far into the future!! :)

No, the basement isn't going to be finished at all for several years....
I'm going to be doing some of the following, and probabyl a little more where necessary:
-Installation of insulation in the whole house
-Installation of all hardwood floors and tile floors
-Painting of all walls, etc.
-Staining and finishing of all wood trim, baseboards, etc.
-Finish electrical work
I'm sure there will be plenty of other things that I will take car of throughout the process, but that's everything i can think of right now... The contractor is willing to let me do whatever work I want to save some money... :goodidea:

Thats sounds like a good deal. If I had some more time on my hands and not so much I need to do around my place. Plus if you were closer I would build your foundation for much cheaper than the contractor will. If you have any questions or doubts about the masonry just give me a shout.

I'll be posting pics often, so you'll have to be sure to let me know what you think!!
The only reason I have time for all that work is b/c of all the vacation i have to use... I saved and carried over 10 days from last year (the company max) and i've only used a few so far this year ... I have 23 days of vacation yet to use for this year, so hopefully this house gets moving, or otherwise i'll have to start wasting days for nothing ...

Congrats man... This is where knowledge of home remodeling comes into play. Looking at home builders it's amazing how much they charge to do simple things like paint/stain etc... If you can do it yourself that's all the better.
I think I mentioned before that I dated a girl who was going to RMU for Actuarial Studies... Wonder if she's still with it, def. seems like it weeds people out!

Yea, its not easy... typically I think they bring in about 30-35 freshman and graduate about 10-12 since most drop out of it... I graduated with 8 I think, and 4 of those 8 wouldn't have graduated with a B.S. in Actuarial Science under the new rules - they would have automatically been bumped to a B.S. in Applied Mathematics...

So, When you movin' in?
I don't know yet..... We had the battle of the century with the township (sewer authority) as they kept changing their mind on what they want.... at one point, we had all the permits in hand to start building, and the sewer authority calls me up and says that they've changed their mind.... blah blah blah... couple months later, i finally had everything i needed....
Since then, i've had some troubles with the builder, which was expected from everything i've heard from people.....
I wanna put a date on when it will be done, but with my luck, i'm just hoping for Christmas this year
