View Full Version : Winter Capri Upgrades ...

Parts started to arrive for my winter upgrades for the Capri. Nothing real exciting yet but I figured I would start a thread with part pictures and update as some of this comes along.

31 spline Detroit Locker. Hopefully this ends my exploding side gear issue ;)

http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/43371/2712608670066453426S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2712608670066453426kqbPxc)

I have been running a 4.10 gear most of last season and the start of this one. When I fragged that rear I tried a 3.55. I was actually pretty happy with that combo with the 26" slicks. For this year I'm going back to a 27" tall DOT tire so I went with a 3.73 gear (Ford Racing).

Ford Racing install kit ...

Moser studs for the bearing caps (they are actually made by ARP) ...

http://inlinethumb32.webshots.com/43615/2037675790066453426S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2037675790066453426NQJMeo)

Moser Girdle cover ...

http://inlinethumb28.webshots.com/44955/2020276270066453426S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2020276270066453426LpujtG)

I also have 31 spline Moser axles and 3" studs for them.

I still need to make a decision on a brace. Right now i'm really thinking about uning the Swarr Bar on this rear. The CHE and tubular mounts are likely to get into my 3" tail pipe and I wouldnt be able to stand this thing if it was dumped so I need the tail pipe. I would likely have already ordered the Swarr brace if it wasnt out of stock at American Muscle (Only place I see that carries it?)

It's a start anyway :D

In addition to the rear upgrades, I have several other projects going on. I'm going to convert from the single V belt over to a serpentine set-up. The issue with that has always been the available pullies. Most all of them for the 2.3 have multiple grooves for the accessories. I was finally able to find both a single crank and single water pump pulley. Been a PITA to find both of these so I imported them from Canada :D (where non-AC / non PS cars are found)

Not very exciting for most but something I have been looking for ;)

I am also going ot move to a large(er) external wastegate. I had every intention of going with a 44mm V-band Tial, but found out Precision just launched a 46mm V-band of their own. Since I run a Precision turbo, I will be testing one of these out. It's on it's way, just not here yet.

The Precision piece will bolt in place of a Tial, comes with 5 springs (only get one with Tial), is a little shorter that the Tial, plus the price is right. This one only comes in Black now (Tial has colors) but it looks good to me. I will post some detailed pictures of the unit once I get it in my hands ...

You in export control or the prime minister or something??? :sticktonge: I do know two other real Canadians...eh :rotflol:

You are going to like where I'm going with EMS but it's not here yet ;)

Boost going up too?

Yep, this turbo is sized for right at 30 psi on my junk and hasnt been even close to that. When we crossed 25 psi it ran out of injector and was going lean so I backed off to 24 psi and stopped there. I have 55#'s injectors in there now, going to at least 75's, with some thoughts of 95's if I think I can keep them clean at idle (a little worried about low PW control). The 75's would take me well past my shortblock anyway but up to 95#'s are the same price :D

LOL, my weakest link has always been the nut behind the wheel  The problems usually start there anyway.

I'm pretty sure the 4 cylinder T5's are next on the "weak link" list. Some find it odd that they live at all  The good news is, Frank and I can change one in about an hour and a half now :D

Maybe :Devious:

I'm not making any predictions this year ... Last year was pretty much a fail for me as far as meeting goals (and I know at least part of what you have lurking on the "shelf"). The external gate should solve my biggest issue of boost all over the place, and the new EMS should make it more consistant as it will have true barometric compensation. We will see :highfive:

UPS gut stopped by today with more parts .... Long story, but I messed the keyway up on my cam pulley so I took advantage of Esslingers year end sale to order up another one. The one on the cam now is "okay" just makes me a little nervous now that this is an interference engine. I'm goingto take the one currently on the cam and use it as a light pulley on the auxillary shaft. This should start some conversations having an adjustable pulley driving the Dizzy :D

My 60mm gate also has a dual spring set-up but so far I'm just running the weakest single for just under 7#.

This actually can be "trippled". There are grooves machined for all three diameter springs. to get 7#'s (7.5 actually) this would run the small natural and red spring. 25.5 (for Troy) would use the Small natural, red, and blue springs.

So, where you STARTING the psi? :)

I put the 10.5 # package in it for the base. That is typical for the internal gates I'm used to and will use the AMS to get up to where I want. I will play with other springs once it gets going. it's easier for me to add 10 to the setting in the AMS than some odd number :D

Looks good Bob....it's a shame though....with all those shiney new parts is this deal still considered ultra-low buck? :)

My 69 car went 12.1's with $2k in the engine total (includes buying it too) carb to pan @3520lbs....I always figured you were out-doing me though in the $/performance mark.....maybe this will put you over the top? :rotflol:

It's pretty sweet to run JY shortblocks and a factory head though....tough to beat $/performance wise! :hyper:

with all those shiney new parts is this deal still considered ultra-low buck? :)

Not even remotely now :( (at least in my mind). It's still "cheaper" than a lot of other options, but better parts keep finding there way on there ...

There is a lesson to be learned here, and I tell everyone that gets into the 2.3's, they are a GREAT bang for the buck set-up right until you max the Stock Injectors / VAM / T3 turbo, then it becomes a slippery slope of diminishing returns .....

Most of the shiney stuff here is driveline related as I'm breaking traction loks ... The gate isnt really needed to drive or "race" the car, but sure will help me with consistancy. That's sort of the theme for my upgrades this year, i'm not actually looking for any gains but want to run more consistant and not be down because it's broke.

It's pretty sweet to run JY shortblocks and a factory head though....tough to beat $/performance wise! :hyper:

The short block that in the car now, was "saved" by Mike (MAP) from a core pile at a rebuilder (true story) and it's the same head I've run as long as I've been into 2.3's (third car this head has been on).

Big blocks are also good bang for the buck ;)

Well, I was seriousley contemplating that. I have most of the gauges except for the Speedo. I have disabled my factory ones. I would just need the speedo and fuel level gauge. I want to do that too. Perhaps next years round of mods. I did too much this year, way too much.

There are a few "limitations" with this package over traditional MS packages.

First, to keep the size small, the unit can only drive high Z injectors. These days with the new Siemens EV6's and fast operating times that isnt that big of a deal. I can still get 80# injectors for ~$50.00 each so it's no nbig deal to me.

Also to keep the package small, the MAP sensor was removed from the package. This is set-up to use a standard GM 3 bar MAP. This is actually an advantage IMO as I already have the GM 3 bar MAP, and do not like the MAP sensor living on the ECU. It could also be configured (software) for the AEM 4 bar if ever needed.

Outsdie of those points, it runs the traditional MS II code, and will run the Extra code. I will be using Tuner Studio for programming / tuning. to start with, I'm going to set this up as a plug in solution to the EEC connector (ditributor PIP signal and direct coil control). Once I get my feet wet with tuning this, I will move to a crank trigger and the COP LSx coils.

Pretty exciting, now we will see if the car ever runs again :D

Martin0660
01-11-2010, 05:22 PM
J- Small everything over here ;)

Rob -Give me a yell when you get a change.

HOw does this compare price-wise to teh AEM and Meqasquirt units?

Last I saw pricing for the AEM, real cheap ;)

Compared to MS-1 or MS-II, well it depends :D If you are building your own MS, probably 2X the cost. If you are buying a prebuilt, vanila MS-II, about the same, BUT that includes the MAP sensor (it's additional here).

This was $400.00 including the flying lead harness. You would have to add the MAP sensor to that (~$65.00) and use high Z injectors. I already have the MAP, and needed to buy new injectors so that is all washed out.

I think Wilson get's $650.00 for his plug and play (bwahahahahhaha) MS-II kit for the 2.3.

For me, the MUCH better connector, sealed case, and flying lead harness far outweighed a few $$'s extra. Also keep in mind, this is a factory built and tested ECU, all potted, industrial quality versus most kits that are "hand built" regardless of buying it DIY or pre-built.

This sure will not be the solution for everyone, but I'm excited about the package.

Can't wait ... i have lots of data, just need some meaning full data :D

is there any way to datalog with this setup?

Absolutely... Actually there are several....

First you can log to the laptop in the convential method. This records not only all inputs / outputs, but also everything happening in the ECM. You can do a full playback of the DL session, plus watch it interact on the timing, AFR, and VE maps.

Second, there is an application called PalmTune. Much like it sounds, it will let you do data logging, and do cell tuning with a palm pilot. These are neat because you can pick them up all over eBay for ~$50.00. You can't do configuration or heavy tuning, but it's great to log, then download back to the PC. You guys met Jim with the green Triumph at QCR .. he was running palm tune to log his runs there on MS-II.

Third, there are two mystery wires on the harness. These are set-up for what they call a CAN buss. Right now there is not a device that exists, but the Buss was built so that a SD device could be added. MS-III is coming and will use this to store datalogs onboard to a simple SD card. Once it is launched there, it will trickle to this set-up using the CAN Buss.

Mark - Here is a "snip" of an open data log from mega log viewer ....

You can see in the graph view for example in the first pane RPM / MAP / TP displayed with max, min, and the real value at the line. Those can be loaded in all three panes with any ECM values as they are all saved with the data log, you just display what you are working on.....

"more important, you might note on the right, the VE table is open as well as the AFR table ... The "blue squiggle" toward the upper right corner of each tables is the target as it moves through the tables in playback mode. So as you are looking at your log data, you can see exactly where you are on the tables (VE / Timing / AFR).

all of the "gauges" on the bottom are internal used values, any of those can be moved in or out of the graphs.

This IS NOT my stuff, just a sample I had laying around. Yo ucan see this only goes to 100 kpa load so it's a NA application. My stuff will be scaled to 200 KPA

Mark (and anyone else I didnt put to sleep yet) ....

You will also see a button called "VE Analyzer" between the tables. This is effectively an autotune feature for cruise VE tables. With a speed density system, you effectively set / tune your timing table no issue, you also set your AFR table based on what you "want", but you really need to fine tune the VE table to make it "right".

Either Tuner studio, or mega log viewer will take you AFR datalog, AFR table, and VE table and compare them. Effectively, it will tune the VE table to match your AFR table, but you can't live and die by it. It simpy is another tool to get you into the zone. Ypou can actually set the authority for the tuning so that it creeps up on it with small increments, or jumps right in :D

Lots of neat little tools in there to tune with. A guy that I'm working with on this has tuned just about every type of stand alone out there and swears tuner studio is better than any of the interfaces. We will see ....

Thanks for putting me out Bob :)
Looks like enough to help me blow shit up haha.
That adaptive tune strategy sounds very cool and time saving.
I hope you don't max out a 3-bar MAP---is that 30 or 45 guage psi?
Also, I got a 2-year old Palm I never use, I wonder if I could watch my XFI with it.
Nice toy you got there man.

Enough to blow my shit up too :D 30 psi Gauge (1 bar = 15 psi, 1 bar is used up in the vacuum side to atmosphere, 2 positive (2 x 15 = 30)

Also, I got a 2-year old Palm I never use, I wonder if I could watch my XFI with it.

Unlikely ... one of the good things about MS is it was set-up from the ground up as open architecture and code. This has allowed people to develop their own applications over time and improve them. Unless XFI developed / sells it, or they license their code (not very likely) it won't happen.

Cool chit Bob,

It's lights years ahead of the tweecer/eek-tuner crap. I wish I had the option of open source software for the AEM box.

So you'll have a boost referenced tune so & can play with the boost at will?

Martin0660

It's lights years ahead of the tweecer/eek-tuner crap. ?

The EEC stuff has made a HUGE leap with Moates Quarterhorse and Binary Editor. I own a license for BE, but this started to come down to a financial decission ... Spend another $250.00 for QH, and still have ot deal with the way Ford does load scaling and all the OEM interactions, or just move along ... I can more or less recover my cost for this selling off the TwEECer, Innovate SSI-4, PMAS slot sensor, and all of that.

The dalalogging you can now get with QH is amazing as well. Every parameter in the EEC is now available as long as the definition file is "good".

Clint kind of pissed me off with how he does his license for Binary Editor (and EEC analyzer). You pay $80.00 for a license, but it is locked to a computer. If that computer dies (mine did), then you must pay another $40.00 to license a new machine. I now have that on my new tuning computer, but it's worthless outsdie of that PC.

As i said, it was time for me to move away from the EEC stuff.

I wish I had the option of open source software for the AEM box.

That's a double edged sword with the MS stuff. It's really powerfull that there are number of really good tuners / minds working on code enhanceements, and ways to make all kinds of things work. The downside is there isnt a "800" number to call for support.

So you'll have a boost referenced tune so & can play with the boost at will?

Basically yes. This is a true speed sensity system. All of the tables are based off of pressure (KpA) versus RPM so as long as the table is scaled to your maximum, it's just a matter of tuning the cells where you are operating. My tables are scaled to 7K rpm and 30 psi boost. If running only 25 psi, the top cells just arent used until they are needed.

Also, you might notice the DEI coating for the wrap. It's pretty amazing stuff. I did this last year, not sure how much it helped the wrap as it came off as dust, but ... It actually stayed on the header and held up rather nicely. With my EGT's it's doing pretty good to stay on there.

Something funny there Shaun ... I went to their site to get you a direct link, and noticed they jacked up the price over the last few days. I ordered mine 1/21/10 for $159.99 with free shipping, but they charged 6% tax so it was $169.59 to my door.

I now see it on their site for $189.99 (I would assume plus tax)

http://www.americanmuscle.com/swarr-bar-88-rear-86-04.html

Swarr is still $169.00 directly, although you would pay tax (in PA) plus ship.

It's sort of an illusion in the pictures, there is room, enough ot stick my hand in there anyway. For sure ... You might take 30% of the exhaust flow out the gate at full boost. Getting that out of the downpipe free's up that flow. The other REAL big benefit is how exhaust flows off the turbine. Sort of hard to "type", but the gas comes off the turbine wheel in a solid, spiral flow path. Interupting that with the gate return hurts flow (BTW - That's why chambered mufflers done work on a turbo car, there are no pulses)

Bob wants a Fart pipe..

Already have a big exhaust tip, wing, etc .... might as well go big or go home :D

I know ... There is three feet of snow in front of the garage door now so it isn't coming out any time soon. I will NOT be ready for the opener with the new fuel injection system, so this could even wait until after you all get going. I'll give you fair warning ;)

If you guys need help, just yell. I'm in for the run down south ;)

The more I dig, the worse this mess gets. Should of titled this thread building a new Capri this winter instead of winter upgrades. I've had some of this around a while, but just dug everything out to make sure I have all the parts, clean paint, etc ...

This car always has been a mutt. The front k-member and a-arms and such are all Mustang SVO. These are heavy forged control arms with a different geometry built into the k-member plus a much wider track.

Got a set of normal 87/93 A-arms plus a set of Steeda forward offset bushings. Those will fix the geometry from the k-member. Also 88 TC Spindles, coil over kit, caster / camber plates, stainless caliper bushings, new ball joints, etc. I am planning to keep my Koni (not SVO) front struts, they seem to work pretty well.

End result will knock a little weight off the nose, get rid of the SVO arms and the ball joint issue, but more important pull the wheels in 1 1/4" a side so I can drop the front end. Not as nice as tubular stuff, but I'm not sold on the coil over and want the option of going back to my Eibach launch springs if I want.

It's all perspective on the turbo size. It is a TO4E50 compressor, so it's not exactly small, but looks huge next to the 'lil motor :D

I'm not much on show and shine, but am trying to clean things up a bit ;)

It just evolves, grows and mutates. I have 10 other things I want to do now, just not going to happen.

In the pics, you can see I took off the turbine heat shield. I used that because of the internal gate set-up, but now have one of these on route ...

Along with a 20% off code and free ship over $100.00. Basically same price as off eBay, but maybe less hassel. They also seem to have good prices on wrap and snap straps. They ship fast off of Ebay for sure. Seems like they might be okay to work with on quantity ;)

I will have a seperate harness for the MAP and some other remote functions, but will get the TPS, ECT, ACT, Injectors, and ignition via the stock harness and the EEC plug. This way, I could always swap back to an EEC if needed.

Next little project is to install a breather catch can.

I had been running my crank case breather with an oil seperator and an open element, but was getting oil vapor on the intake side. I also had the valve cover breather back to the turbo inlet, but want to run the filter right on the turbo now so I need a place for that as well.

This is a Jaz dual inlet breather tank ...

Bob,

are there any rules of thumb about placement of a wastegate?

Martin0660
03-05-2010, 04:53 PM
are there any rules of thumb about placement of a wastegate?

Not hard and fast, but there are preferences ;) Ideally as close to the turbine and as in line with the flow path as possible. Of course that isn't always possible because of packaging, and it will affect response and boost control.

If you get down to it, all the WG is doing is causing a controlled leak to loose some of the exhaust energy. The best backpressure is at the turbine wheel, so the closer the better there, and of course it is flow, so as in line as possible is better.

For example, Joe Laramee drills a hole in the turbine housing and puts his right into the scroll, right in line with the flow. He has excellent boost control, but you are dealing with cast steel. I went back and forth myself about doing something like that, but ultimately want to be able to change turbos without having to keep modifying them. My placement is surely not ideal, and we will see how good or bad it is based on data logs in the near future ;)

Last year I tried a Stewart Warner boost gauge because it was the only one I could get that went to 30 and still had a vacuum scale. I really like their gauges, especially that the lighting comes through the numbers. Going to change out the voltmeter I have in the car for one of theirs ...

Hasen't been a lot to post pictures of lately. I've been neck deep in wiring getting everything set up for the new EMS system. I finally have all the wires / cables to the right place, cleaned up some old wiring I didn't like, etc... Going to finish landing the new wires to a terminal block tomorrow then it's ready to hook up the new EMS.

I did manage to fix a couple little things in the console. When I put the AMS boost controller in, I threw a volt meter I had around in there ... I got the new Stewart Warner one installed and cleaned up even more wiring back there. Also, for some reason ,the console in my car was always crooked in the front. I got it more straight, still not perfect, but not near as anoying as it was.

It sounds like your BOV is fluttering.

If by fluttering, you mean working exactly as a BOV is intended to work, then yes, it's fluttering ;) The spring and shims are exactly righ in my set-up. On a throttle wack like in the video, it just lets back surge out, but you don't want to dump the system.

Well .. Car is on the ground, starts, idles, moves (back and forth 2 feet ;) ) and does most things a car is supposed to do. It needs washed badly, going to try and sneak a wash and wax in this week. We are set-up to do the internals of the rear end Friday night (new gears, Detroit locker, axles, etc) ... Should be ready to drive Saturday morning :D :D :D

In time yes ... but I will only be there as a spectator for the opener.

No, I need to shake down all these other changes before I swap to the new EMS. I don't want to be dealing with boost control and other things while trying to tune that. I need a couple good days street driving, maybe a TnT, then the Ford computer goes away :D

It is also time to replace my belts. This two year interval thing is a little old. Decided to try the G-Force Pro series this time. Real nice belts so far ...

By the way, the belts came from Summit today and are date stamped May 2010.

Sticking with the G-Force theme got one of their pro helmets ... and I decided to try a full face helmet. Also got a mirror smoke visor for it so I don't have to wear my sunglasses ...

Eh, it's only money so I bought a new helmet bag for it all too ...

Sure ... There is a lot of extra belt, then you adjust it to fit you, then you have the adjusters after it's all fastened up.

I gotta say camlocks FTW

Two issues with them in my mind ... duble the price for something you have to replace every two years, plus, this was likely a dirt track thing, but back in those days I saw several sets locked up from dirt getting in them.

Gbet your anxious to try the new mods

For sure!

next time try simpson platnum they replace for free after 2 years or recert them i think

Martin0660
04-01-2010, 04:39 PM
they replace for free after 2 years or recert them

It's all a freaking scam Troy ...

G-Force belts are like $60.00, cam locks are $120.00 ... Recert you pay shipping, and they replace webbing for $50.00 + return shipping.... Sounds like a wash with new blets ... Even worse, you see that the same service for cam locks is $100.00 ... the damn webbing is the same, and they are giving you your hardware back (why you paid double to start) ...

Same with the Simpson deal, year, you get a re-cert, but you pay twice the price. Pay me now, pay me later, just pay me every two years.

Believe me, I believe in safety equipment. I have more in my car than is needed, and will continue to do so. This whole belt thing is just frustrating.

Even dampers and flexplates / flywheels. Those are going to be next to be inspected in detail as the manufacturers will push for it too. I would be a very large percentage of the cars racing EVERY week are out of cert on that stuff.

yeahloh95
04-01-2010, 05:21 PM
I have heard that they have gien guys new belts yes they cost more but a free new set makes them the same price , the whole belts recert thing has pist me off for years too they do not go bad after 2 years of use if so they were just to begin with

Took it for a ride ... no drips, smoke, leaks, etc ....

Had the NRL boost controller "off", boost went right to the spring pressure at 10 psi :D

Turned on stage 1 (+5) and it went right to 15 psi :D :D

Turned on stage 2 (+10) and it went right to 20 psi :D :D :D

We have boost control :woot1: Now to crank both stages up ;)

The dump pipe is by no means obnoxiuos. The first time it opened I was like .. .ehhh... at the higher boost levels it starts to scream.

Rear end parts go in tomorrow night!

Nah John, I've been driving it over the last few days and it feels like a mid 12 car ;)

Also bumped up both boost setting, now have 21 psi on on Stage 1 and 25 psi on Stage 2. Both setting still control. Now to get some injector in the thing at let this turbo eat.

Good new is, it's 1:30, I smell of rear end grease, but the rear end upgrades are DONE! I can not thank Dave and Chuck enough for working all night like this to get my stuff together. The thing came together really nice.

Martin0660

Well guys ... the front end is D O N E ...

Most of you probably have never seen the issues, but the geometry on a SVO K-Memeber is very different than a normal fox or SN95 car. There is more camber built in, the pick up points are different, and the a-arms are a lot longer. Through a real freakish combination of parts, I got it right where I want it with no more SVO parts up there.

One of the big issues is that using other FOX arms usually moves the wheel back in the wheel well. Part of that is good for me as it gets the tire off the air dam, but with just the arm it would of been too much. Got the Steeda offset bushings in 92 GT arms with TC spindles and it nailed the wheel location ...

http://inlinethumb03.webshots.com/28866/2399099040066453426S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2399099040066453426RqzFqA)

Car is filthy right now, but i'm happy with that ....

Now with the coil ovwers and the wheels in 1 1/4" more I could finally drop the nose ...

http://inlinethumb50.webshots.com/32177/2366843610066453426S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2366843610066453426FeaJzb)

Down to getting the car on 4 corner scales again and setting pinion agle with all these changes and it's getting done! I will get better pictures once the car is clean and the sun is out :D
