Guys,

I have the situation where the black rotating assembly of my steering column key ignition gets out-of-sync with the key when you start or turn off the ignition.

I have to hold the key and the black outer rotating assembly together to keep them aligned.
And if not, the key gets all jammed in there and it is a PITA to get it out.

Anyone familiar with this?
How to fix?

My friend told me that you could shove a center punch up through a hole in the steering column and pop that whole ignition switch out and get a new one from a locksmith keyed to fit. Is that true? Does anyone know of a place who can do this for me?

Thanks!

Mine has done this for a long time and its a fairly common problem. I'm just careful with it. I never looked into a fix for it though. I just make sure sure to turn them both at the same time when I start it/shut it off.

Mine did this also, but I replaced it. I couldn't find one specific for our cars at the auto parts, so it was ordered through Ford-about $30 IIRC. It was easy to remove, put the key in the ignition and turn it to the accessory position. Insert an awl, or any other small pointed tool into a hole on the lower side of the ignition housing, and pull the switch out.

I never got my ignition key cut to match the existing, I just got different keys for the ignition and locks-no big deal.

the yellow 95 I bought was like that, but it was missing the key so i got the tumbler and everything to fix the problem, i put a 96+ key and tumbler in it.

If you take your key to a Ford dealer they should be able to code the new lock cylinder to your key.
