View Full Version : New 363/369 N/A Combo

In the works to do a Dart 363/369 (still unsure on exact size) that will be "zero" balanced.
I want to spin this thing up to 7500 rpm or so and still have the valvesprings live for a few seasons with a Custom TLSR Billet Cam and all matching hardware.
Heads will be my TFS TW TEA CNC 205 heads that will be springed for the TLSR Cam and use Titanium Retainers and a set of Probe Shaft Mount Rockers.
Looking to be in the 11.0 compression range to live with pump gas 93 octane. Im going to need some pistons that will get me in this ballpark that will also be power adder friendly as I will be using some nitrous down the road.
I will use the TFS Box Intake along with my Accufab 90mm t.b.
All 3.5" intake tubing, SCT 2800 - 90mm MAF with huge 12"powerfilter from Anderson FMS.
This combo should go low, low 10's in my 3200lb. raceweight car. Throw a shot of nitrous on it and ......mid 9's!
Hope to have this whole combo together and ready to go by late Febuary or early march at the latest.
Im very excited to do a nice high winding N/A combo and push it to some super quick times!

I'd like to stick to a shelf piston that is power adder friendly and can keep me in the 11.0 compression range.
3.600 stroke crank? Damn, maybe i'll ring Woody to get his insight on this.
Any thread links or other info on this?

Grab one of the Eagle 3.47" stroke cranks and offset grind it down to a 2.0 Chebby rod journal, use a 2.0x5.4 scat shelf rod, and voila, you're up close to 3.6" crank, depending on how close it originally was to TIR, phase with crank key, etc. Mine wound up at 3.550" when it was all said & done.
Woody can definitely make it happen, ask him.

Mike, Thanks for sharing that info. Im going to call Woody tommorow and see what we can do with this option.:goodidea:
I'd love to get as many cubes as I can out of this little 8.2 Dart block.
Does the crank usually need a few slugs to balance when doing this?
Isnt 4.155 the last shelf piston?

I don't know about the pistons. I had a custom set, and with the Scat rods, I went internal with 2 slugs.

Robert,
diamond has a nice t/w specific flat top piston I used made from 2318 aluminum off the shelf in large bore. Mahle has a large bore t/w f/t with the 1.5mm, 1.5mm, 3mm ring pack but, its made from 4032 aluminum. Probe makes one too, lots of options now for pistons. I'd use the smaller ring package for less parasitic drag.
With an 8.2" deck height block I'd stick with a 3.4" stroke & a 1.10 or 1.09 c/h piston.
Which block are you going to use?

Update:
Im teaming up with www.FordStrokers.com to build an 8.2 deck 385 cubic inch shortblock for my 94 Cobra. Ive trusted Jim (Woody) in the past with another engine build and he delivered beyond expectations! With Woodys track record for building reliable horsepower I knew I couldnt go wrong teaming up with FordStrokers.....:king:
Im a participant in the Pinks All Out event held in Norwalk OH this year on August 28-28. Our goal is to have the engine done, tuned, and have the whole car sorted out for this event so I can hopefully go some rounds at this event and show everybody what a little small block 8.2 block N/A engine can do!:D
The combo will be as follows:
Dart SHP 8.2 short block via FordStrokers
Displacement isnt final yet but should be in the 385 cube range.
4.155 x 3.550 - 385
Trick Flow Twisted Wedge CNC 205 heads via TEA
C.I. Custom TLSR (Tight Lash Solid Roller) Billet Cam
Probe Shaft Mount Rockers
Trick Flow "R" Box intake
Accufab 90mm Throttle Body
SCT 2800 - 90mm MAF
Mac 1 3/4" Longtube Headers with 3" Collectors
Dr. Gas 3" Off-Road X-Pipe
Dynomax 3" Bullet Mufflers with 3" turndowns
G-Force T-5 Transmission
Pro-Motion Custom Clutch
I'll update the thread as more details and pics become available and as progress is made on Project "FordStrokers 385 Pinks All Out" is made. The goals for the engine/car is to run bottom 10's N/A and maybe bust into the 9's here and there. Possibly some Nitrous in the future.:D
Im very happy and thankful to be working with Woody @ FordStrokers on this project as he runs a top notch shop and puts out some big time Horsepower!

?????
The old 347 Blown combo was going to make much more H.P. than I expected initially and was getting out of hand. That combo could have easily made 800 rwhp and went bottom 9's which im not prepared to do.
Once your consistently in the 9's then you have to:
NHRA Competition License
Full Cage 10pt.
Windown Net
Fire Suit
Etc.....
I like to keep my car streetable and IMO it wouldnt be with all of the above listed. If I can go bottom 10's N/A consistently and maybe bust open the Nitrous bottle when I get a 9 sec. itch here and there then I can avoid the above posted negatives....:goodidea:
Trust me it was a VERY HARD DECISION to stop my old project in its tracks and rip it back apart and start all over again....
Working closely with Jim (Woody) has eased the decision some as he's great to work with. I was close to having the car tuned.... but now im now removing the engine and getting it ready to crate up and ship to the new owner in Colorado!:highfive:

Thats going to be some serious RPM, you'll have to make sure you get the right trans/clutch. I'm sure you're going to need something face-plated or pro-shifted for 7500+ shift points.
Good luck man, hopefully I'll see it at Pinks (or before).

Yeah im in the works now with Wally @ Pro-Motion to do a face-plated TKO 600 or possibly a TKO 600 with Carbon Fiber synchro's to withstand the 8K shifts.

Been on the street with one. Not anywhere near downtown commuting, but never the less upshifted and downshifted sometimes. Had a deep gear in the rear so 2nd gear starts got the call most of the time. 5th was still syncronized too. Kinda funny when going through the gears in traffic and a loud bang emanates from the trans. when selecting a gear. The glance from the unassuming could be interpreted as this dude must have just go this car and is murdering that trans. hahaha!

Also coming aboard to help with the Pinks All Out project car is Mike @ Wolfpack (www.Wolfpackspeed.com). His shop will be building a complete 8.8 and help with some of the welding and tuning of the suspension.
Im very grateful to have Team Z & Wolfpack in my corner for this project. Im very confident in both of their shops parts and abilities. Big thanks go out to Dave & Mike for coming aboard!

had a G force dog ring trans and upshifted and downshifted just fine. The upshifting a low rpms was just fine too. Best tranny I ever owned.Love to hear all the whining from the straight cut gears and the banging as it went into gears. so much easier with this trans with the gas pedal buried in the floorboard

Hi guys,
I have a Liberty Gear Proshifted TKO in my Mustang and I drive it on the street. It's jerkey, whiny, and you have to double clutch it to prevent it from grinding on the up and down shift but at the track it's the best investment I've made. I def wouldn't want it in a car that's street driven regularily, that's for sure. I'm actually thinking about looking for a trade for a stock TKO because with the 2 babys in the back seat it's not much fun driving to cruises or shows. Just my .02.

I have thought about this and still continue to do so.
I do have an agreement to purchase a Liberty Face-plated TKO 600 right now at a very agreeable price that would be very hard to pass up so I am leaning towards the stick.
Im sure the car would be much, much faster with the auto but it's hard for me to give up what I love (stick shift). With a stick its much more of a challenge to get a good 60' and to nail all of your shifts down track.
Auto's just dont impress me.....like a fast stick car does....:)

You need an aftermarket engine managment system like (FAST) or (BS3) to run those as there no way to run a MAF meter when using them.

Rob - awesome combo man, 8k rpm, I can't wait to hear this thing zing at the track!!! Sorry I haven't gotten back to you to hear all the details, I've been super busy with work lately. Dave filled me in on what you're up to though.
You crack me up - you seemed concerned about a tranny being streetable and you're putting a spool in the car, LOL!!!
You'll love those shaft rockers, good choice! Make sure you get an LSM torque wrench (I have the part number somewhere if you need it) for your lash adjustments. It lets you adjust lash, hold it, and torque the adjuster nut in one step without changing wrenches. The torque is critical from what I've been told, or you risk snapping rockers! You probably know this already, but thought I'd mention it.

Absolutely! The car has a ton left in it, this was the cars first trip down the
Track in over 2 years and it has a brand new engine...tranny...suspension...
Fuel system...rearend....tires...etc....basically the whole car is brand new.

On how fast the car eventually goes. Don't forget this engine was
Built to run some big time nitrous on it! I'm going to continue to run it
N/A this year though as my racing budget is drying up quick.
I have a msd 6al and a msd 2step that I'm currently running.
I believe the car will go 10.50s in some cooler weather once I get the car sorted out.
As for now I have a lot of testing to do in the next month before pinks gets here!
gmkillr
08-01-2010, 02:38 PM
Went today and did a bunch of testing....probably made 7-8 hits total
What I have learned:
Car will not rev over 7500, once it hits 7500 it hitting a limit somewhere....in the msd 6al or in the sct chip
SGS told me he set it to 8500 so im not understanding this.....
I tried short shifting the car at 6000-6500-7000 and it hit the same limiter on each shift.
I disconected the 2-step and tried everything with the same results.
I tried a 5400 pill in the msd just for ####s & giggles to see if it where it would hit and it hit dead nuts on at 5400.
I honestly dont know whether:
1. My distributor is cutting out and I need a new msd or summit brand distributor
2. My MSD 6AL is cutting out and I need a new one. I can get a digital 6 box for $190 shipped but dont want to buy without knowing its the ignition box for sure.
3. Possibly my TFI module that I now have mounted inside my fender. Its a newer unit that I put on a few years ago.
4. My stock computer....
5. The tune on my sct chip
Wolfpack Speed has offered to go through my chip and make a few small adjustments on things that he believes would help and burn it on a "better" Diablosport chip and give it to me to try. That way if it doesnt work I still have my SCT chip to fall back on.
Help...guidance...advise...critisism.....anything would be appreciated at this point.
Here's the Summit brand distributor im looking at:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-850410/
And here's the MSD:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8455/
The Summit brand one is $85 cheaper and truthfully looks like the MSD so I wouldnt be suprised if MSD makes them for Summit and lets them market it as their own.
I dont want to go buying part that I dont need or have the money for that matter so what are some suggestions?
If anybody local has a distributor or ignition box for me to try I would greatly appreciate it!

Thats the 1 and only pass I ever had a "clean" non-hesitant shift and it was at 6800-6900
I made multiple hits today at that rpm and lower and had the hesitation/ stutter.
My 2nd gear burnouts are made in the 5000-5500 range.

Robert,I have a TFI module and the module from the distributor that I can ship to your house to try out and see if these are the culprit.
This is just a thought, but with you spinning this new combo much higher than the previous ones, have you checked the shaft in the distributor for excessive wear. I'm thinking the shaft may be wobbling causing erratic contact at the rotor??

Got a MSD box or distributor to try? lol:laughing:
The shaft in my old distributor did have alot of play and thats what caused the rotor to hit in the cap and break. Threw in a replacement old dizzy I had laying around that had NO play in the shaft and the car runs fine but I still had the above experiences with my testing after it was installed.

From my understanding its for any and all eec-IV and eec-V as they all have the same 15MHz oscillator crystal in them. They need to be upgraded to a 18MHz crystal to process the higher rpms.

My first suggestion is to run the car on a full quarter mile track because you might learn something on the second half of the track or find more problems. I can understand tuning your suspension and launches at that track but you have bigger problems. Pinks is not 1/8 mile...
I highly doubt its the distibutor because it is working the whole time the car is running. It doesnt know when you are shifting the car. The same thing goes for the TFI. They usually act up when they get hot and it is all through the rpm ot also doent know if te car is shifting.
When I am questioning my ignition box I do what Joe said just bypass it and run the factory ignition and if it still does it thats not your problem.
Im still betting its the tune or the crystal.

keep in mind with steel valley it is great for shakedowns but not always accurate comparison. you were def pulling some decent 60s there.
wouldn't be surprised with msd box. have had a few go bad on me. but usually revert back to stock ignition temporarily and see what it does.
I really doubt its the tune. It makes no sense. Have you changed the cap yet? I would bypass the msd and try a different coil. How is the charging system? The pop could be causing issues at the elevated rpm also.
Figure, dave tunes enough race cars that turn the high rpm.
Balaska347
08-02-2010, 02:27 PM
Its not the cap but they are cheap enough if it would make you feel better to try it. If you know how it works it doesn't make sense for it to only do it during shifts.

Its not the cap but they are cheap enough if it would make you feel better to try it. If you know how it works it doesn't make sense for it to only do it during shifts.the rpm rips up when he is pushing the clutch in. It could be giving some erratic spark inside the cap.

Doesn't he run a face plated TKO? I didn't think you used the clutch when shifting...
He spins the motor to 7800 no problem therefore the parts that he has have to be working pretty darn good. The problem only occurs during the shifts. I highly doubt he is going to find the problem with the basic things. This is only my 2cents so dont take it for much.

Still use the clutch with a face-plated trans.
I also thought about the 2-step on the clutch but is there anyway to disable it if its tied to the clutch?
What did Dave at SGS think.

Im borrowing a MSD 6AL box from a very generous board member to see if that is part of the issue.
Im getting a brand new MSD Billet Distributor.
Dave Guy @ SGS wont return my phone calls....
The only way my 2-step works is if my momentary switch is held down so that is not the issue. This was the very first thing that I tested as I thought it could have been the culprit. Once I let my finger off of the momentary switch the 2-step no longer works. Hell I even took the 2-step out of the car and it changed nothing.
I will make some 1/4 mile hits before Pinks, I have to worry about these issues first.
Once again Mike @ Wolfpack Speed is really stepping up and helping me sort out my issues. Hats off to him!:goodidea: Thanks buddy!:highfive:
Im going to try a new improvised tune from Jon Lund via Wolfpack Speed and upgrade the crystal in my stock ecu.
I use a diaphram clutch that is shifted just like a NON-Face-plated tranny.
Ive heard you can shift them without the clutch but it is extremly hard on it so I wont be doing that anytime soon....lol:o
From my research, with the crystal upgrade to the stock ecu and a good tune is good to 8500 rpm which will suit me fine as my junk was built for 8K.:)

Hopefully the crystal helps, PM sent to you and Mike.

New MSD Billet Distributor should be here today from Summit.
I have cam303's MSD 6AL box all ready to go. I want to run just the new distributor by itself first to see if thats the fix, if not then i'll switch over to cam303's (Chris) msd box and make another pass to see what that does.
Testing,testing & more testing.....
J, I hit ya back with a pm bud!

Lol......ummmm no!
It will take some extreme measures for me to ever race at prp again. Quaker and steel valley are closer, nicer, and hook a 1000xs better.
Quaker has t&t on thursday this week and steel valley has t&t on friday and they both have race days on Saturdays.
I should be racing Saturday at one of the 2 tracks. Hopefully with revealing results!

oh , i didnt know they raced during the week , and i didnt know prp was that far for you. there are a bunch of knowlegable guys that run at prp , its hard to help diagnose a problem over the intenet .

Why don't you speak with Bob Kurgan. I think he can do a mail-order tune for the PMS. He may have some ideas otherwise too. I buy all my AEM stuff from Bob.

Let me know when you come back to reality lol. The only thing thats correct in that statement is that they are closer. Seriously Steel Valley is barely even a race track. I do go there from time to time because the people that run it are good people.

Steel Valley is way closer, might not be that nice of a track but it hooks.
Quaker is better by all reguards!
Its a faster track, 1000 x's nicer, hooks better, better managment, much nicer atmosphere, etc....Just a better track all the way around.

Ran the car today at Quaker City Raceway!
The Negative............
Brand New MSD Pro-Billt Distributor........ did not cure the problem.
Hooked up & tried another MSD 6AL Box (cam303's)...did not cure the problem.
Tried short shifting the car at 6500 rpm.....did not cure the problem.
2-Step completely disconnected.....did not cure the problem.
The Positive......................
The car hooked very well on a completely un-prepped track that nobody seemed to be hooking on but me.....which I believe attests to the work Wolfpack did helping me set-up the Team Z suspension. A combination of great parts & knowledge helped the car immensly! I managed the following 60' times:
1.470
1.472
1.473
1.500
I feel on a well prepped track that the car could do some 1.43-1.45 60' times
The car pulls like an absolute freight train up until the hesitation at each shift.
Fordstrokers built me an absolute missle of an engine!
Ran:
11.22 @ 121.63
And I have a handful of 11.30 slips @ 121-123
Wolfpack Speed is burning me a new chip with a few improvements in it that could possibly help with the hesitation issues during the shifts. I should be out next weekend testing it. More news to follow............

I think you got this time. Like I said, I believe it in the computer which I thought SGS would have taken care of it. Being that it only happens during the shifts and the RPM doesn't matter told me it wasn't going to be a mechanical problem like dizzy, cap, ignition box...

Car Hooked great and went 1.46 but I was experiencing some clutch issues.
My clutch pedal was sticking to the floor and wouldnt come back up.
Despite the clutch setup being shit I still managed to go 11.43 with the pedal sticking to the floor on 3 & 4th gear for a long period of time.
Once I get the clutch worked out and the hesitation issues between shifts cured I feel that the car will go 10.70's or so no problem. Just gotta work through these new car/combo bugs and get the car to perform that way that it should.

Rob,
while I'm sure you're disappointed you gave it a good effort. You'll get it sorted out and I hope you see the potential of the car. Look at gray86hatch (Tim) over on hardcore, the guy tests, tests & tests some more. You'll get there, keep plugging away at it!

Mark, Thanks alot and im definately disappointed but at the same time I understand it takes time and lots of testing to get things perfect. I will have this car going where it should be hopefully by the end of the season.
I have an engine that accelerates like a freight train. I couldnt ask for more out of my engine, this thing is a beast!
I have a suspension & rear-end that hooks like a mofo. The car just hooks and goes better than I could have asked for!
Thanks!:goodidea:

What are your thoughts on the hesitation. If you got that PMS, I'd still talk to that guy near Norwalk about tuning it then running it after.
What clutch set-up?
11.40s is still good especially the 60'!

lol.......yeah it certainly does take awhile to iron new combo's out...
Im thinking that the hesitation lies in the factory computer but before I go there I need to get these clutch issues worked out as I cant make any good passes with my pedal stuck to the floor....
My clutch is a Kustom Hi-Rev from Wally @ Pro-Motion.
Thanks alot bro!
