Hey guys-
Here is my simple rebuild thread. I'm taking the car to Volker's at the end of this month for a re-spray.
Other mods will be Team Z front end, and brand-new-in-the-box 1993 OEM cobra wheels, new quarter windows, and outside trim and moldings.

Well the 1st round of hole filling SUCKED. Vital smoothed out the welds only to find 90% of them were junk. After tweaking the welder, Vital started back at it. Having Vital there welding and grinding makes my life easier. :)
I removed the wing, tail lights, rear bumper cover, and misc. interior pieces. 2 weeks 'till paint. Ugh.
Two weeks left, you better get crackin son!! Welding the aprons is a bitch. I went that route once only to buy the Scottrodfab panels. made life so much easier.

Well the pictures can be deceiving...the front bumper was scraped up from me, the rear bumper cover was spidered before I bought it, some doucher sprayed the car before I bought and was too lazy to remove the moldings (clearcoat is chipping), and so on...
I hope Jeff works his magic!!!

The tubular frontend decision is killing me:
Hand downs the best option is MM, but all in that kit is $1900. That includes c/c plates, k member, coil-overs, a-arms, bushings, 2-pt brace, steering shaft, etc. This kit still pushes the wheelbase out 3/4". I dunno if I like that. I don't wanna possibly cut up my front fender extensions.
My other option is PA Racing tubular, MM steering shaft, MM bushings, MM c/c plates, and keep my a-arms, springs, and shocks. That is $850, and retains the factory wheelbase.
I know its like comparing apples to oranges, and I guess ultimately its my money that has to buy it. :(
Thoughts?

+1, I wouldn't want to mess around with extending the wheel base. Plus that's a lot of extra coin that you can spend elsewhere.
I've seen the Team Z k member in smallville's car up on a lift and it looked to be great quality. If I ever end up going to a tubular K I will probably go with Team Z. The PA racing one is probably good quality as well, I just haven't seen one in person.
PA racing is pretty good. After I got all the crap worked out on my Team Z, I am pretty happy with it.

That wasnt smart. The car should be loaded with the suspension compressed as it drives down the road. Full weight and level. There is now a chance your will be on a perma-bind and the doors wont close correctly.

Hey Rob-
I talked to MM before welding the connectors. The guy out there said people weld connectors in all the time w/o the engines in. I had the car supported on the suspension and leveled during welding. I dunno.
Well Tim, you might be ok. I hope you are, that's for sure. I am going to have to stop down and check this thing out here real soon

You really have me second guessing it though. What about race cars? Do they simulate the weight before adding connectors, cages, etc?

HAHA Yeah, the car has a nice twist to it.

I am really not sure about this. I know for cage installation, the car has to be perfectly level. Not sure about simulated weight though. I have never done frame connectors on a "roller" car. All the ones I have done drive in and drive out. I always check the doors with the owner here. I have him open and close them to be sure they are correct. If not, then I shim the stands to get the car to the normal load. That generally gets it perfect. No stuck doors yet. Done a great many sets too.

Slight problem tonight. I tried to install the transmission without success. The trans is about 1/2" away from the bellhousing. It will not go any further. We did replace the pilot bearing. I think thats where the problem is, but why?? I looked up the 4 cyl. pilot bearing, and it looks nothing like the 5.0 one. I don't think thats the problem. Ideas?

Venom, I've had this problem before as well. Have your wife or a friend sit int he car and as you work the transmission in have them push the clutch in slowly and the tranny will pop right in. I also had to do this on my 70 Charger R/T eventhough I alligned the clutch with the tool. If you're within a 1/2 inch or inch it will work, try it.

looks good man!! powder that blower housing too. lets catch up sometime. -Bill
I know Bill. I wanted to have it done, but I'm skerd. I gotta come check out your car sometime soon!!
Just extended a few wires, then ran them inside the fenders. Next winter I'll put the entire harness inside the car like Vital did. I'm too lazy to do that this year!!!
...and who else?

Lots of loose ends to get tied up in 10 days!!!
I need to roll the fenders, maybe swap springs, send my new belt tensioner (bearing seized up last night on the one I just got coated) to powdercoating, and finally figure out my power steering leak before I get it outta my garage...then I still need alignment and inspection.

5/31/11 update. The car moved outta the garage under its own power, but soon after that there was fire underneath. Ugh. Clutch cable? Speedo cable? I guess I have to crawl under it tonight.
Crappy pics but you can see the new kicks. They are black FR500s, 18x9 and 18x10. Thanks to 50DRO for the guidence during the wheel and brake upgrades.

Back from the dead...
My car never seemed right ever since I put the engine back in. I started to tear into a little deeper, and found that #4 cylinder was getting no spark. Swapped ECMs and the car felt great. That was short-lived. Within ten/fifteen minutes the car began DUMPING fuel out of the tailpipes. Few minutes later the car was knocking terribly. Turns out when I pulled out the ECM I must have scraped some insulation off of #8 injector ground wire. Injector was wide open 100% of the time. Ugh.
After complete engine disassembly, #8 rod is bent, crankshaft is damaged, and all of the bearings are wiped out. Fun fun.
Back to the square one.

What's your plan?

Thanks guys.
The original plan was to put a low milege 302 back in the car, but I didn't want to spend time and money on a block that I didn't have history on.
Ideal plan would have been to buy Bill's R331 block, but I don't make Bill's money. :)
I ended up taking the block to Street Lethal for a 331 build...using the stock block. My plan is to have a little more torque down low, and back off of maximum boost. I'd like the car to be more "usable" on the street.
My stock block held 538 rwhp for 7 years, so what is a couple more years with a better rotating assembly and safer tune!

Small update. Motor is back from Street Lethal, and installed in the car. I sent a few more parts out to AMF for powdercoating. The car should be running within the next few weeks.

Another update. No good news. My gremlins have come back to haunt me. Last September I traced down a grounded injector wire to #8, and fixed it. Damage was already done to #8 rod and cylinder wall.
I started the car up over the weekend only to have the same issue of dumping fuel out of the tailpipe. #8 injector is working fine. Maybe some or all of the wiring has been damaged, or the tune is bad, or the MAF is bad, or whatever.
Before risking any damage to the new motor, I'm heading up to Street Lethal this weekend. I'm sure they can trace down whats going faster than me staring at the car.

Going out on a limb, I had very similar issue after a motor rebuild and ended up being the 02 sensor's were reversed accidently, left was on the right and so on, so fourth. Worth a shot checking.

Thanks. I actually did check that before I started the car up. Damn gremlins!
