PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins say they've reached an impasse in negotiations for a new arena and will aggressively explore relocation.
The team sent a letter to Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl saying they are faced with mounting uncertainty that an agreement can soon enough for the team.
The Penguins said they will notify the NHL they are looking to relocate.
The team is declaring an impasse even though it has agreed to pay $3.6 million dollars a year in rent, plus another $400,000 a year in capital expenses.
But the Penguins say that's not enough for the state.

WTF these aholes better get their shit together and get this done. They are not going to leave Pittsburgh. I think this is the last strong posturing the Pens have left as time winds down. Let's all hope so....

this sucks, i have a bad feeling. the only hope i think we can have is garry bettman said he will not let the team leave if pittsburgh comes up with a decent proposal(sp). and we are giving them a better deal then the steelers and pirates.

I'm sure they'll have a hard time leaving a city where they sell out damn near every night to go somewhere that ticket sales will be less certain.

it realy wouldnt surprise me if they did end up moving, i dont trust burkle.. but if they do move i give it 3 years tops b4 they are bankrupt. kc had a nhl team back in the day, it didnt work back then and it wont work now.

I knew it was only a matter of time, the only thing Pa is interested in is building casinos so they can take the old peoples social security check.

its either they are going to bottom out when they leave or they will be successful.. its no in between.. I still dont know how they could be thinking this way especially after a season liek they had this year

Its not about the season this year, its about how the possiblity of a new arena suck here. The civic arena flat out sucks. The ice blows to skate on, the luxury boxes blow, the roof doesnt open anymore and it's one of the oldest rinks in the leauge.

i dont think they are going to take down the mellon arena, so concerts will still b here. but it would b nice to go to such events in a new building.
to be honest, i dont put full blame on the state. the pens are getting the best deal the state has ever given a sports team. i think that burkle thinks he can do better in kc.

I agree. Sports are one of the few things that pgh has left. They start leaving and what does the city have left?

with regards to concerts, pgh gets passed over for many shows because of the arena.
the arena is not capable of handling the big tours.
i would like to see some proof that this is the best deal a sports team has been offered in pa, i highly doubt that. we all know what the pirates and steelers got. dont even know what the eagles, phillies, sixers, flyers got, besides all the above getting new places to call home.

u can dig up on kdka.com the revenue sharing and etc thats on the table. plus the pirates, steelers, eagles, and philly's if you would like. i know the nhl doesnt bring in as much $ as the nfl or mlb that may also b a factor. but in regards to numbers in parking revenue, arena shows, and rent. peguins will get more and pay less.
we do get passed up on big tours, that why i laugh at the people who dont want the city to build a new arena. its just a mess and i know ill miss my season igloo seats :worried:

The penguins im sure CRUSH the revenue of the pirates. they have basically been sold out all season long. it's hard to find 1 particular section at PNC park full
