View Full Version : Trick Flow TW heads/intake ?

I am looking into some new heads as the iron gt-40's just arent giving me enough flow for the kind of hp im trying to get.. I know I'm going to get about 60 people telling me to go with afr 185's but I just dont want them.. everyone around here uses them and I want something a little different. Does anyone on here use the TW heads? if so, can the stock pushrods be used with them? any piston to valve clearance issues ? I have a stock bottom end for now with a E303 cam.. in the next year or so it will probally end up with some kind of stroker kit (331 or a 347) at that time I'm sure I'll be swapping the cam out for a comp cams custom grind. Anyone have any idea of a hp increase I should expect to see over the gt-40's ? I dont really want to change the intake manifold b/c I like the motor to look as stock as possible.. they say the cobra intakes are good to 400hp? is this true? Mine has also been ported (upper and lower)

Yes, you can use them with the "Stock Shortblock" as Joe has proved:


1. 5.0L OEM stock shortblock (Natural Aspiration)
2. TFS Twisted Wedge cylinder heads
3. Off The Shelf Comp Cams hydraulic roller
4. Out of the box Holley Systemax 2 intake
5. 75mm T.B. / 73mm M.A.F.
6. 9:1 static compression ratio
7. MAC longtubes, off-road X
8. Tremec TKO
9. Combinaton of QA1 and Baseline Suspension components
10. Weld Draglites 15x8 (rear) pizza cutters (front)
11. Diaphram clutch
12. Mickey Thompson 28x9 ET Drag slicks
13. Last but not least... a *little* weight reduction:D



10.763@123.63... No bottle, no blower, no windmill. Just 3 pedals, atmosphere, and hook.....Oh, and a OEM stock 9:1 c.r. 302 shortblock Fox Lake Racing, Total Engine Airflow, Liberty Transmission.

You will have to get new push rods with the TW heads. I think they're a little over $100 for harden ones from trick flow. With the TW design you should have more piston to valve clearance. I run the TW heads out of the box and I like them.

Your basically going for the the same combo that I'll have on my 91LX. I have TW heads with a GT-40 intake and an e-cam with 1.6rr. Like was said above your going to need longer push rods.

I have had an all trick flow setup for about 6 years now. I love it. I never got it tuned. Still runs good though.

I had a car with trickflow cam heads and intake loved it everything worked well with it

Thanks for the responses guys, I just did my income tax returns and i'm getting back $1238 .. the heads are something like 1254 so that worked out pretty well haha as soon as i get that check, i'm gettin my heads ! Woot Hoot ! I cant wait!!

Are you guys running 1.6 or 1.7 roller rockers? I am thinking of switching to 1.6's for these new heads.. but I'm just curious if anyone has used the 1.7's with success.

I use 1.7's but it depends on what cam you are running, 1.7's will give you .03's more lift.

I'll be running an E303 so I should expect on .501 lift with 1.7's instead of the .498 right? would I still be okay with piston to valve clearance ?

The E303 is advertised with .498 valve lift. This valve lift is calculated with a 1.6 rocker ratio. To arrive at the lobe lift divide .498 by 1.6 This equals.31125 Now take that value (.31125 and times it by 1.7 to arrive at the new lift figure. This is .529 valve lift.

P/V clearance always needs to be checked because the camshafts valve events *can* dictate P/V In other words, someone else can have a cam with that much lift but with different duration values and to take it one step further, the same duration @.050 BUT different values at different measurements.

The Twisted Wedge design has been proven to be a well respected cylinder head among the slew of cylinder heads available. Again, like I have not heard this or said this a million times, the total combination of parts will generate good power. Choose the peripherals wisely and have a goal for the power-output and you will not be disappointed.

Oh, if you are not stuck with installing the e-cam, there are better alternatives out there e.g., TFS stage 1 hydraulic roller, etc.

Mike, the numbers you came up with (.501) was only adding .003 (three thousands), .03 (three hundreds) will give you .528 with the 1.7's. It's is easy to make that mistake. You should have plenty of piston to valve clearence.

I could have run 1.7 because my cam isnt crazy (Steeda 18). I have a ton of room still and the TFS spings are fine.
