I have a 1987 LX and am looking to upgrading the brakes. I am considering doing a 5 lug swap so as to give me 4 wheel disks and a larger selection of wheels. My question is - would getting 4 wheel disk brakes be a bigger improvement to my brake system or would going with a 2 piston front caliper and larger diameter rotor in the front and sticking with 4 lug wheels ?

search for 50DRO on here. He just finished a 5-lug swap.

'99+ GT front brakes are the best compromise as you close to Cobra brake power and still can fir a 15" drag wheel.
Lots of options, what do you want to do with the car?

It will spend greater majority of time at the drag strip, but will be driven to and from in addition to occasional street time. Would like to be able to handle "spirited" street driving - but track will be primary driving.

Sounds like '99-04 GT complete spindle and brake option is best and good for budget.
I run '95 spindles and Wilwood drag street discs for the '94-04 cars but its more expensive. Strange makes a decent front drag brake for the Fox spindle that still can have a vented street rotor I believe.

Are the rears worth changing over to disk as well ? If I'm not upgrading to 31 spline axles, looks like you can buy 5 lug 28 spline axles with drums or should I look for a 99-04 kit for the rear with disk as well ? Thanks for all the information

I went 4 wheel disc, stops much better than with the rear drums. I used 94 spindles with 02 PBR twin piston calipers, Cobra rear disc 11.65" rotors.
That way I can still run 15" prostars for the track. I also used a 95 booster and 95 cobra MC.

If you are going to run drag wheels (welds, etc) you might consider just changign to the SVO / Lincoln rotors up front. This will get you 5 lugs cheap enough. You can also upgrade to the Lincoln / SVO 73 mm calipers for a little upgrade if desired. The downside to this swp it that a lot of the popular street wheels don't fit because of the bigger hub, but they work fine with wheels like Weld's (and cast knock off's). Actually, the wheels fit, its just that the dust cap wont fit typically.

My Capri is all SVO brakes (11" fronts & 11.88 rears) and stops on a dime and still allows for 15" drag wheels.
