View Full Version : Capri on the dyno

I have been struggling to get my junk to a good baseline this year with the crappy weather, and hit or miss traction at the track ... So I drug the car out and got it on a dyno ...
I never touched the boost, this was all at 25 psi ... the primary thing for me was to get the AFR dialed in as it's been fat. That doesent hurt power so much on my stuff, but it's sloppy. Got the AFR where I'm pretty happy at 11.5:1, still safe, but not so fat (was 10.7:1 ish).
Also played a little with ignition timing ... Added a little and it likes it, but didnt have enough time to do a full work through of that ... It's okay, but still safe. Power on the table there yet.
Also played with my cam timing to dial that in to my shift point and RPM drops.
Made 10 pulls, really beyond happy with what I found and learned, got tons of data to work through, and got a solid base set-up to go forward :D Anyway, on to the pictures ...
Dyno plot (as found is dotted, as changed is solid) ...

Column 1 is the final set, column 2 is the baseline pull ... It made 365 RWHP and 358 Ft/lbs on a Mustang Dyno ... not really interested in the peak numbers but found 20 HP, a little torque, and moved adjusted it to where it fit my shift points better.

And a few videos ...
Engine during a pull ...

This is interesting, watch the hump hose at the throttle body, and especially the tee at the blow off valve ... I also need to figure out a torque strap ...

And the ProStars going around :D

looks like 25-30 hp and ft.lbs. from just tuning? good work, indeed.
now, tell me more about the video at 20 of 30. :goodidea:

11.79 @ 114, threw away a .009 light know it was going to breakout on a 11.81 dial.

Thanks all ... Greagt experience with dyno tuning this thing and then it following up with track numbers ...
Ultimately it was a great night ...
1st pass out it slipped the snot out of the clutch. Track was loaded with bite, and I had too much hook in it ... I backed the firewall adjuster off, and aired up the tires hoping to hit them a bit. I'm going to have to deal with clutch for sure, but the car responded and went and ran it's best ever ...
60' - 1.58 - This is still a best (previous best was 1.59)
1/8th was 7.51 at 91.99
1/4 was 11.83 at only 100 mph (strange here)
We got a third time trial tonight ...
60' - 1.63 (didnt add air to air bag and it rolled on RR)
1/8th - 7.56 at 92.25
1/4 - 11.86 at 114.04
So I added air to my air bag, let 1 psi out of the tires and threw a 11.81 on the car hoping it would stick ... Car went:
60' - 1.61
1/8th 7.50 ay 92.36
1/4 - 11.79 at 114.39
The bracket racers here will love the timeslip ... I got out past 1000' and he was at my door. I smacked the tree (was all over it tonight), and had it covered, even if a close race, and ran it out the back door knowing it was going to break out ... but I got the timslip with a new best ... I would have killed myself if I would have braked and still lost. Timeslip for reference ...

Nice runs Bob. LOL I did that 3 years ago in final round of a no box race. Was .002 and went under by .01
I see there is mph at 1000' Thats new.

yes, they was running the Nitro cars to 1000' like NHRA ... You should have seen the amount of VHT they sprayed on that track today / tonight ... The guy sprayed the water boxes past the traps ... National event prep for the win.
Oh should be fun tommorrow then.

you need to update your sig
Fixed :D
Thanks Troy ... The debate right now is if I should slow it down to race my class today (no faster than 12.00) or buy into Modified and try to update it again tomorrow :D

Bob if you ever want to sell your car, let me know :)
Your car rocks and congrats on the new best. The dyno is a great place to tune because it gives you the chance to adjust things ina consistent, repeatable environment.
And everyone seems to look down on turbo 4 bangers but you and I know better :goodidea:

Eh, it's one of those things, guys that get it do, and you wont ever change the one's that don't. I mess with this junk for my own joy, so I really never care what anyone thinks.
I can tell you this, The car generally gets looks for what it is, but it sure got some people paying attention this weekend ...

Great results Bob!
On the dyno, did you roll out of it at 6300 or does it pull higher?
-J
Martin0660
05-23-2011, 10:22 AM
J, I ran it to 6400 every pull once I got a few things fixed it was still making power when I lifted on it. I optimized the cam timing around 6200 as a shift point. I just don't think I can consistently shift a T5 any higher. The combo should make power to 6600 anyway, but I advanced the cam to move the curve lower. The "funny" thing is, this was really just to get a baseline, there is a lot left in the tune and parts.

Gotcha, then just up the boost, keep the shift points the same and let it rpm with more mph out the back-door?
That will be my advice as the devil on your shoulder this weekend ;)

LOL, reminder to self, keep J away from boost controller ;)
It will be interesting to see what it runs at QCR now ... The uphill might add a little load ;)
Funny thing is, I need test and tunes to figure out how to slow it down to 12.00 for PRP (will be on the good tune up Sunday). Nice problem to have.
