View Full Version : Enough with the ricer "stage #" talk

White5.0

Why do people feel the need to, when listing modifications to their car, mention what "stage" the mod is?

For example, I was looking at an ad on craigslist for an STI that the owner states that the ECU is "flashed to a stage 2"...WTF ON EARTH DOES THAT MEAN?!?
http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/2507260871.html

I see this ricer talk all the time and its so annoying. What are your "Stage 2 Cams"? or your "Stage 3 clutch"?? Damn ricers!!!!!

How about explaining the lift, duration, LSA, etc. of cams? Or maybe the torque capacity of clutches? Or what parameters are changed in the tune? To the people that do this, stop watching the fast and the furious so much and actually learn something about cars:nono:

Also, I understand some manufacturers actually name their products like that. e.g. comp cams stage II, etc. I am referring to the people that just say that their car "has stage 2 cams" without listing a part# or manufacturer

I dont personally believe an STI is a ricer, but that depends on your definition of a "ricer". It is a well performing car. To me a ricer, is a joke of a car that douchebags think are fast. for example: http://image.superstreetonline.com/f/Cavi_90/9496049+w450+h338+cr0+re1+ar1/2003-chevrolet-cavalier-kicker.jpg

this cavalier is a ricer to me, even though its not a jap car

Anyways that's besides the point....I see mustang guys doing this all the time too

Yeah - that stuff irritates me too, as it does when people say their car has an "RV cam"....or a "3/4 race cam"...

I dont mind WRXs and STIs but every one that i know that owns one thinks its the pinnacle of automotive performance. No matter what you have it cant be faster than a STI!!

Stage 3 dominates all!

They would make a bad ass DD, quick and goes good in the snow

I know I'd love one for a DD, they are tanks in the snow. I would beat the piss out of it and not be so worried about getting it dirty like I am with my stang because they are kinda made for that having rally car roots

My stang on the other hand...geez...that thing sucks in just the rain

Comp Cams listed the cams for my car as Stage I, but I always used the part #XE262AH when I advertised it for sale.

No, those lambos aren't ricers. They have different stage cars with different power levels. They aren't listing stage X parts on the cars

Do me a favor and re-read my original post please. I said I understand that certain manufacturers name their products that way. for instance stage 2 comp cams.

I hate when people say they have "stage 3 cams" <--notice how I did NOT list a manufacturer.

various stages of vehicles and stages of work performed are different. like a "stage whatever ported eaton" or a "stage whatever valve job"

I think its dumb when people say "I have a stage 2 ported eaton" instead of saying "I have a stage 2 stiegemeier ported eaton"

Tell me a little about the part/work done. just giving a stage doesnt explain shit

Yes, that is what I'm telling you. Most companies such as Cobb provide stage tunes in their handheld tuners that coincide with the modifications on the vehicle. A stage 2 would be for mods like a turbo-back exhaust and intake upgrades. The more mods, the higher the tune stage that's needed to support them.

Yeah but I guess my point is, people that "understand" what he means by stage 2 just know that it "just works" for that amount of mods, but they dont know exactly what it does.

I prefer knowing the details of things like that, but thats just me. I understand not everyone needs to know all the little details

especially in a neon ;)

On a more serious note, there is some degree of validity in using the "stage X" descriptor. Like slow01gt said, its a shorthand for a mod or list of mods. The problem is that unless you are into "the scene" for that car just seeing "stage X" is meaningless.

This.

A good friend of mine has a wrx that he had tuned at mach V, a dsm/subaru/bmw shop in virginia. Whenever they asked him what he had doneto the car before the pro tune he said a stage 2 cobb tune and they knew exactly what that meant. They put it on the dyno as it came in and it made 221whp and they said it would make 220.

I know what you mean though, sometimes the stage terms get thrown around like nothing and it makes the owner sound like an idiot. But they are definitely meaningful when the person isn't acting like a tool lol.

+1. Stages correspond to certain mods.
Stage 2 on a WRX is full turbo back exhaust (including downpipe and such) and a handheld programmer flash tune.
APR Stage 2 on a 1.8T jetta is a flash tune, a front mount intercooler, turbo back exhaust, and different diverter valve.
