OK - so, i'm so pumped about hockey again, i've been watching the preseason games on TV - when normally i don't care about preseason...
I think the Pens have a great chance to be one of, if not THE elite team in the league this year - but obviously that's dependent on injuries. Geno looks to be back in top form, and when Crosby comes back, i'm hoping to have 2 fully healthy superstars...
I was discussing with a Coworker this morning about the lines... and here's my personal opinion... (this is all considering Crosby is back and healthy - i'll discuss below my lines if Crosby is not back)
Kunitz - Crosby - Dupuis
Neal - Malkin - Tangradi
Cooke - Staal - Kennedy
Asham - Adams - ??
I know for certain they're going to try hooking Neal up with Crosby, but I just don't get it... Yes, there are better wingers than Kunitz and Dupuis, but why try to fix what isn't broken?? Crosby was having a CAREER season last year with these two guys, and its also the same line he was on when we won the Cup in 2009. Same goes for the 3rd line... No need to split up something that has worked so well in the past... Then, maybe for teh first time in his career, Malkin can actually have some decent wingers...
Now, until Crosby comes back, and i feel certain he will, why not go with this...
Neal - Malkin - Tangradi
Cooke - Staal - Kennedy
Kunitz - Letestu - Dupuis
Asham - Adams - ??
This eliminates the mid-season swapping of lines when Crosby comes back... it allows the Malkin and Staal lines to gain some chemistry with each other and carry that throughout the season... When Crosby comes back, you move Letestu down to the 4 line, or Wilkes-Barre, and you've got the line-up i listed above...
We're much better defensively than we were the Cup year, and if we can reunite 2 of those 3 lines, while giving Malkin some good wingers for the first time, I think we've got the team to beat...
However - as always - much of our success/failure is going to come down to the guy in the cage... So, the pressure is on Fleury in my opinion...
LETS GO PENS!

It's so hard to play the "here are my lines" thing when Bylsma changes them up so often.
Those all seem like they'd be legitimate combinations, but you never know what he's going to see as far as chemistry. I definitely think Tangradi still needs to prove more before he's on the top line, I think that is still Kunitz's spot to lose.

The tought part of that is, (this goes with everyone, not just Tangradi), you have to truly be a special talent (e.g. Crosby and Malkin) to prove something when you're playing with other lower line players.... The great thing about 87 and 71 is that they make the guys aroudn them better - to what extent they make them better is the key part...
I take Dupuis as an example.. he's not the most talented winger on earth, but in the past he's always done so well with Crosby...
Lots to look forward to either way.... :)

This is true. I was at the game on Sat. as well. My cousin is on the same Squirt team as Mr. Morehouse's daughter, so we got Suite 66 which was absolutely badass and a great fan experience.

Well - even hurt, Geno looks like he's just a dominating force on the ice.... I thought he looked hesitatnt a bit last night - didnt seem to want to get into scrums on the walls like usual, but he was still "johhy-on-the-spot" all night... everywhere the puck went, there he was....
Seems as if Neal is meshing well with him... if things stay that way, maybe i'll get my wish from above...
And what else can be said about teh Asham knockout... wow is all i can say...

So... I've never been a big fan of MAF, but I've sucked up my pride and been very happy with his play this season so far....
But, every time i watch Brent Johnson play a game in goal, i'm praying that MAF was in goal (i never thought i'd say that).... i mean, come on - he just gave up 5 goals on 8 shots!!!!! are you kidding?

Yeah, that D isn't exactly on their game either though. Pens need to get healthy and stay healthy. Something they just can't seem to do. All these makeshift lines can't be helping things..

Yea, my brother was in Philly several years ago when game 4 of the conference quarter finals were in Philly and the Pens were up in the series 3-0.... they were in line to go to the bathroom and stepped out because a Pens fan was taking a pi$$ and got punched in the back of the head by two people....
I've been to several Pens/Flyers games in Pittsburgh, and there is no love, but i've never seen nor heard of anything more than some bickering back and forth... no physical beatings..

Eagles fans are just douchebags, period.
I was on the orange line (BSL or Broad Street Subway line for those not familiar with philly) heading downtown. Just before the doors close all these douchebags decked out in eagles jerseys stop the door from closing and pile in. Since you have to go through center city to get to the stadium I knew I was in for a shitty ride. Yes, with them already half drunk and rowdy, I got to hear that f'in stupid eagles song over and over and over and over and over for 25 minutes until I got off.
Its always so satisfying when they choke in their predictable fashion.

Sometimes I question Bylsma's system. The team is never healthy, and the proof is the man games lost and the fact that sid, geno, and staal have only played a handfull of times together in years. Could also be just plain old bad luck....who knows. Boston is CRUSHING teams right now.

Well, i certainly wouldn't mind seeing Gil come back - but i'd also like to see Sergei Gonchar come back... i'm sure i'm in the minority here, but even though he has lost a step defensively, his PP presence was incredible... I know the Pens' powerplay is like 8th in the league right now, but it still seems like its missing something to me.... And when Gonchar was around, he brought more than just 1 aspect.. his shot was good enough that the other teams PK had to respect it, so it kept them from keying on Malkin... Malkin's 1-timer was INCREDIBLE, and nowadays they don't even try to set it up for 2 reasons... 1.) no one can seem to pass it to him right... it seems like something so easy, but NO ONE can do it like Gonchar did... and 2.) they always have someone just standing in his face if he's on that 1/2 wall... so they've completely gone away from even attempting that shot... and that was how we score TONS of goals on the PP...
I think Gonchar should be in the last year of his contract with Ottawa, and i'd love to see the pens pick him up...
But i think you can also look at the fact that MOST of Crosby's and much of Staal's salary didn't count toward the cap this season - so i think the Pens should have lots of money to go out and get a big name player as a rent-a-player..... I know they say Crosby will play again this season, but does anyone really know?
Cant' wait... really would like to see Geno win another scoring title, and hopefully get the MVP award this time, like he SHOULD have had it last time... Regardless of that, i think we need to have both 71 and 87 to win a cup...

I like how Staal had an assist and a goal and yet ended up as a +-0. I'll give him credit, when he's been healthy this year, he seems like he's been better then years past but I still want him gone.

I agree with most of what you say here but I'm not sure is Gonch is the player he was two or three years ago. Plus, Geno can't work the 1/2 as well as Crosby can. I do like Gonch as a point man, and if we were to pick him up, I wouldn't be opposed to it but I'd like to see Gill back and us make a move for a decent forward.
MVP to Geno for sure, at least at this point anyways....
Also, I'm not positive if we absolutely need 87 to win the cup. Of course I want him back for the run but if we had everyone back healthy with the exception of Sid, I don't think it's impossible.

Well, this is going to happen when you jumble the lines that have been playing so well for so long. You get that "out-of-sink" sorta look which needs to be ironed out. The Neal, Malkin, Kunitz line has still been producing despite the losses just because that's one of the only line that still remained somewhat in tact.
If that's that the only major problem going into the playoffs, I'll take that problem. Still so much talent on this team, I still believe it's going to be hard to beat them in 7.

I guess what I mean is they're playing down to their opponent. Look right now. Things heat up....they take it personal, and look at the score. No doubt they have the talent, but the lines have been jumbled all season with injuries and such, and they played right through it.
Sid came back into the lineup while starting the "streak" and it kept going, so what changed so much since then that would make a difference?

I was referring to their winning streak. During that streak, their lines remained very similar and they all found their groove. Sid came back, and welcomely so, and things got moved around, hence things get out of the groove.
Sids overwhelming talent of course is going to produce no matter what line mates he has next to him but everything else seemed to be out of sync. Not saying that is their only problems....forecheck after the dump in and net front presence, just to name a few, are some other issues that need to be corrected. They just need to get the lines set and find their groove again with everyone healthy.

Start Johnson? Are you serious? How about not giving up odd man rushes every other shift and not hanging Fleury out to dry all the time. That would be a start.
The defense needs to step up and start taking their men to the net. There were two short handed goals scored the last game. That is just plain unacceptable if you want to win a series.
Fleury has been playing pretty well. Sure, there has been some soft goals. You have to expect that. That happens. But for the most part, he's been looking good. 5 goals should win that game but when you are constantly back checking on odd man rushes, chasing Philly around in your own zone and giving up goals on your own power play, other things need adjusted to win.

Agreed.
You want to play North/South yet you turn it over every time in the neutral zone.
We have no secondary waves off of our rebounds yet they have 2 or 3 waves of secondary scoring coming in for their rebounds. Plus, when you give up the rebounds that we are giving up, what can you expect but goals.
Jesus Christ.

Lets back up though, I think the juicy rebounds are a sign of a netminder who is not confident in their defense. The d sucks right now. Players getting blown away on the 2 on 2's and such. Martin needs to go back to pulling bingo balls.

Oh, I'm totally there with you. It's ridiculous. On that last goal, Dupuis comes in swipes at it and misses, Engelland can't move it around the boards behind the net and then Flyers come up with it and put it in the back of the net.
Awful.

Fleury's has been suckin n blowin it straight out his A$$, PERIOD!!! He's not saving goals he alwayz does, one of us could go in there and do better with our hands tight'd behind our backs!! Hit the net for pete sack, especially Malkin. The overall whole team just looks rattled like the other games!

I like Johnson and think he a great teammate but he has been just plain horrible this year. I hope he can get back on track next year or I fear he will be supporting a different sweater after the trade deadline.

Watching the Phoenix / Nashville game right now, and HOLY CRAP!! Both of these teams really know how to play defense. And the Phoenix goaltender is absolutely lights-out unbelievable!!
And Hal Gill is involved...go figure.

I haven't paid too much attention since the Pens have gone out, but the favorites to win the cup RIGHT NOW have to be the L.A. Kings.... taking out the Canucks in 5 and then sweeping the Blues... that's phenominal... the Blues were an incredible team this year...

I think he hurt both his own earnings potential, as well as the trade value... such a shame...
Although, i can't say i wasn't prepared... when he had a very good second half of the season i knew he was gone... There was no way they could continue to keep all 3 of the big centers on the team, and still fill the rest of the roster with quality talent.... and there's no way on earth that you can get rid of Malkin or Crosby - not while the Penguins are still a competitive team...
And i agree wiht the statement the writer made - i think the penguins are CRAZY to offer Staal $6M a year... he's not worth anywhere near that.... then again, Paul Martin isn't worth 5.5M either..

I agree. I do think that Staal has his best hockey ahead of him though. His old man should sell his sperm on ebay. They might even get that 6 mil. with 3 kids in the NHL. Paul Martin....big disappointment!
Stieny has to be unbelievably happy too.....
Not a bad trade overall. Staal to Carolina and ended up with #8 pic(defenseman Derrick Pouliot) from them along with center Brandon Sutter and defense prospect Brian Dumoulin.

As much as I liked what Staal had to offer, I was sort of relieved he did not accept the offer from the Pens. I would hate to see them mortgage their future with having so many players under long term contracts. What they got in return from trading Staal will only strengthen the depth of the team, Sutter is a decent two-way center, not Staal's caliber, but a worthy replacement. Pouliot's style of play has been compared to that of Kris Letang, and the guys on the NHL network are gushing about this pick. I guess time will tell.
Can add Olli Maatta, looks like another good pic.

even thought its front-loaded, and you know that last couple years are only probably 600K as it currently stands, you gotta respect that they were able to work something out where the cap hit is only the same as what it is today... average 8.7M per year

Neal and Malkin sure line up nicely, I'd love to see a 1-2 punch for next season.
But that still leaves a lot of questions on Defense!
