View Full Version : 2011-2012 Capri Winter Upgrades

It's that time of year again, started to aquire parts for my winter upgrades. Yes, I know it's early, but as typical, I start pretty early and end up struggling to make the early season races. Two big items on my list this year, plus a pile of little stuff.
The core of the first big project showed up today ... Building a G-Force T5 :D Pictured is the GF gear kit (includes the fluids shown) plus a .82 over drive gear set.

This is the helical gear, syncronized kit. Gears will be 2.94, 1.94, 1.34, 1.00, then of course the .82 OD combined with a 4.10 rear. I also ordered the GF alloy main shaft, it's just not here yet. Along with this, I will be changing from my 10 spline clutch to a 26 spline.

This is the second part of the projects this year ... No intent to spray it racing typically, just something to play with at the NMRA type races or an occasional glory run ...

Nnnaaawwwwwssssssssss!!!!!!! :woot1:
As much as I HATE winter, it is always fun to follow your winter projects! :awsome:
Are you using a regular T5 case? How much power will it be good for with those guts? I'd love to have a T5 that could survive more serious punishment in my '66.

As much as I HATE winter, it is always fun to follow your winter projects!
LOL, it's also how I pass the time ;) Nothing else to do so I might as well take pictures and entertain myself and some others ;)
Are you using a regular T5 case?
Yes, stock case. I have talked to a lot of people, especailly people with GF experience and racers, and nobody could really say that the aftermarket G Force case was much, if any better than a stock case with the right parts.
How much power will it be good for with those guts?
Keep in mind, in addition to the gear set, I'm upgrading to the alloy main shaft, plus adding a billet cluster support (neither here yet ;) ), but it's still something you have to put in context. Here is what they say ...
With the available upgraded 9310 mainshaft, these synchronized gear kits will handle roughly 600 hp or 500 ft-lb. of torque in a 3300 lb. vehicle with drag radials and moderate clutch upgrade.
When you really talk to those in the know, this is affected by a lot. Add an aggressive clutch, slicks, and big RPM clutch drops, and it goes down ... How far ???? .... well, I'm going to have to do that durabilty testing :D
I think it will fit my combo well. I am going back to a Spec 3+ clutch with a marcel spring (The 4 puck without marcel is very agressive), They said that fits their "moderate clutch" range ... And although I do high RPM clutch sidesteps, it's really not under torque like a V8 would be until the boost comes in. In reality, I had just crossed a point where stock T5's was failing from torque, so this is a big step up anyway.

Bob, I've never met or talked to you, but I enjoy reading all the advise you have for all the members. I finally got to PRP last Sat.to run my 88 fox that I have been putting together since last winter. It has a 408 CI 351w, C4, 410 spool. My two best times were, 10.40 @ 130.1 and 10.33 @ 129.25. Needless to say, I was very pleased. I'm 71 years young and this is fast enough for me. I'd like to attend a NMRA event next year and tag along with you guys.Fast Gypsy Vince Ciganik Allison Park,Pa.

Lookin good Bob, I know we talked about loosing 1st gear ratio, but I think the car might do better with it overall, or just leave off a small shot :) and it could help you spool a BIG turbo later ;)
BTW, why the .82 OD?

Lookin good Bob, I know we talked about loosing 1st gear ratio, but I think the car might do better with it overall, or just leave off a small shot :)
Yeah, through this year I have (un-intentionally) added 1st gear ... Started with 3.50/3.73 and was border line on traction ... Went to 3.97/3.73 and lost 60' (what I had at Milan) ... In preperation for a new tranny I got the new gears installed (3.97 / 4.10) and couldn't buy traction on one of the best starting lines I've seen. So going up is the right move, it's just a big jump to work through. I needed the rear gear anyway as I was crossing too low in RPM, the good news is I'm mostly happy with that now with the 4.10 in there, it just killed me off the launch.
I am implementing the launch control strategy in my Squirt this winter ... I can pull timing starting at X rpms and increase the pull as needed up to the rev limiter. We will see what boost I can get in with that.
and it could help you spool a BIG turbo later ;)
Nah, this junk is done as far as engine evolution ... I'm just going to get what I can out of this combo of parts, hopefully can actually hook & shift it, but it is, what it is ... The parts are there to run what I want to now.
BTW, why the .82 OD?
4 banger thing ... remember at 2500 rpm in 5th, I'm at NO boost, so it's a 8:1 compression 4 banger ... without gear there, you are in and out of 5th constantly cruising around ...

A few interesting things with their parts. The 1 & 2 syncronizers are new assemblies with what they call "Carbon Particle" lining and have different cone angles than stock. the 3 & 4 Sychro rings are carbon fiber lined. This is the 1 or 2 assemblies (hard to get a clear picture) ...

Not sure if it's better to have the clamp nuts on the outside like shown, or the inside. It can be changed, just a tupid little thing to keep me thinking ;)

Maybe the inside to keep them out of the way for when you put tires in and out. The more you post makes me want to start ordering things now.

Some progress ... Got word that the G Force main shaft was delivered today. Also got a message that the input shaft was done at the machine shop (ground pilot to 2.3 diameter).
So parts will be ready to go to assembly for the transmission. Issue now is the parts are on the East coast and I'm on the west coast, lol. Probably go for assembly after thanksgiving.

The rest of the parts for the G-Force build came. The main shaft came a while ago ...

Small detail, but the Ford Racing pressure plate bolt kit is 1/2 the price of the ARP's and rated to the same strenth, plus the FR kit comes with dowel pins ... The ARP bolts are for the flywheel.

It will be interesting for sure, I might get bored if it makes it that far out without a gear change :) Lots of potential good news, I should be able to run much higher tire pressure, it has great splits so I can adjust cam timing back, etc ... I just need to be able to get at it enough to keep out of a bog.

Been hung up on what I was going to do for nitrous controls (switches). They make a panel to fit in the ashtray, and there are a few other options, but they all mostly suck to reach from the drivers seat when belted in ...
DynoTune makes a gauge type control center, but it has more switches than I need.
Picked up an Autometer gauge pod, and a blank gauge from ProSport and going to build my own. Will mount it on the column beside my shift light, should be easy to reach ... Will have my Arm switch and purge button in there.

Be sure to take some video the first time at the track. It'd be great to see the new-and-improved Capri in action!!!

I don't know Troy. We will never know on my car ... I'm not moving my fuel pump and don't see a reason to carry the extra weight.
