View Full Version : Need some suggestions (cam, intake, tune)
Hey Mike,
Need some suggestions and recomdations for parts.
First off, what Cam would you suggest for a N/A 4.6? I was thinking Comp stage 2 cams and comp valve springs with stock heads. And id like to do the eldelbrock Vic Jr intake manifold. For exhaust, Catless O/R H with Pypes M80. All this with a dyno tune for you guys. If I go dyno do you still suggest buying a Sct tuner? If i buy a tuner and get it dyno'd, do you do custom tunes for it? I would most likely just keep it on a 93 tune (do not care about as milage). I doubt ill ever go forced injection with the 2v, so why do you think with this combo? Only fears are its a 100k + motor and do not want to blow up on the dyno. Goal is 300 hp, or sonewhere in the ball park. Basicly looking to wake the car up and have some fun. I would guess a real conservitive tune? Anything I'm missing?
Thanks for the help!

Barry,
I like to do custom cams but for an NA bolt on car, most stage 2 cams should work pretty well. I have done a bunch of the Comp stage 2 cams, they sound good but are known to have some PTV issues if your not degreeing the cams. I don't like Comp valve springs, many will argue that the OEM springs are better, I have another brand I like to use. A custom dyno tune would be best but we could always just sell you a mail order file to get you started. Either way you need an SCT flasher which we can sell you, we don't mess with chips anymore and don't direct flash. If your horsepower goal is at the tires, you going to get your heart broke on the dyno! Just not going to make 300 to the tires with a 2v and a couple bolt on parts!
Either way, ring me at the shop if you have any other questions or when/if you would like to put something together.
Thanks
Mike
Great info, thanks!
So if I go that route with the cams, use the stock springs? The HP number is just that, if it feels good is all I care about.
Go through you for the SCT tuner or buy one from AM or LMR?
Really appricate the help. Once I start getting parts ordered and get a plan together I will set something up with you.
Thanks!

barry my 02 2v made 295rwhp with hi-tech motorsports stage 2 cams and mac long tubes. went on to make 434 rwhp with this and 8lbs of boost via a procharger :goodidea:pm me for any details

Did you use the stock cam springs? What else after the LT's? Catless mid pipe? 300hp was just a ball park for me. I'm sure 295 rwhp felt good on the road right? You ran stock heads and block with this set up?

Just curious, why don't you want boost? Seems like a bunch of money for not much performance.

Couple reasons. One, I think cost would triple and down time would be longer. Two, fear of blowing it up greatly increases. Im not overly confedent aftet reading online what the 2V cam handle. Three, really no need for boost for what I want.
And before anyone mentions it, nitrous is NOT an option. I'm not messing with the stuff and I want nothing to do with it. lol

Well I don't think cost would triple esp after you pay for install. Down time would def be less if you went w a blower. You could install a blower in a weekend with bolt on tools taking your time.
I have KB on my 2v and it has live for at least 4 yrs now and I'm not exactly easy on it when I drive. 7lbs of boost put my @350 rwhp and was an absolute blast on the street.
I figured after the blower, fuel upgrades, cooling, gauges, tune, plugs ect ect cost would be more. But I guess in the most basic sense it's cheaper? I guess I always thought to do so would be thousands even in the simplest form.
I read ill these guys saying to guys with forced induction that they need to go forged internals or else the 2v is on borrowed time.
I'm guessing would feel comfortable with 7lbs and a good tune.
Great info so far, thanks guys!

Not sure what cooling your talking about. Most blower kits come with the cooling needed for the blower....intercooler. Even with just cams your still gonna need some fuel upgrades, plugs, and a good tune. So that stuff is a wash.
You don't need forged internals unless you plan to got after big power. If all you want is 300 rwhp, you can boost your stock engine and be fine. I'm at 400 rwhp now for almost a year without an issue. I have even had the valve covers of my car...that's how stock it is lol

+1 on boost.
I'd go with a P-1SC and rake in the savings Mike is offering right now (I think it's around $500). Unless you REALLY want a lopey sound for sitting at red lights, I say a blower or centri is the best bang for the buck. Run 7#-8# and a good tune and probably make 350ish. The procharger kit etc. come with the intercooler etc. that you need. Visually you'll have the intercooler in the bumper and soundwise the P-1SC will give you some whistle.
GL OP.

I like the blower route as well. The centri on my '66 REALLY woke up the car. If you keep the boost levels low ( below 8psi or so ) I'd think that you'd be fine - and that anything that might go wrong there would have gone wrong even without the blower.
And if for some reason you sell the car at some point, you could easily remove the blower, and probably get more $ selling the car and blower separately.
Do some searches on various sites for power #s for cars running the different intake/blower/exhaust combos and reach out to the owners of the cars with the setups that interest you. Once you think you're set on the path you want to take, run it by Mike or whoever you plan to do the install, and see what they think.
Fall/Winter is a long ugly beast. Take your time to think through this and get it right the first time. You'll still be back on the road by spring!!
Good luck, and keep us posted!

+1 on the blower route.
Easy to install, nicer street manners, much bigger gains.
I love my cheap Paxton setup.

WOW SAC! I didn't realize you were down to 11.58. Nice job! Weren't you in the low 12's before? What gave you the gains? Smaller pulley, suspension tweaks? Driver mod? :goodidea:

Thanks man. Mainly a pulley drop and new wheel/tire setup.
Last fall I went 11.91 @ 116 with a 3.8" pulley on 17" Hoosier drag radials, stock wheels up front.
This fall I went 11.58 @ 119.5 with a 3.33" pulley on 15" ET Streets with Racestars.
This is with the factory 3.31 gears, stock transmission, stock valvetrain, stock long block, etc. Pretty happy with it. A little boost goes a long way. :D

Ill stop in soon and hammer out a finally plan before I start buying parts.
Great advice and tech guys. Really now I have some decisions to make! I'm leaning now towards going the forced route. Maybe a hybrid of both. Forced induction with a lopey cam to compliment it. If this comes together its gonna be amazing.
Rob that mustang in that vid sounded mean.

Jeez - the car in that vid has some nice paint!
A little too much blower noise for my taste though. Still - quite a nice car there.

Man, that car in the video looked like ass.
I think the Steeda wing threw it off.
