Rather "short" upgrade list this year ...
New Short Block - I have actually had the parts for this at the machine shop for some time. Everything inside the block will be new, no compormise build with the best parts I can put in there.
New Clutch set-up - We now haw an option to adapt a 5.0 clutch set-up to the 2.3, Canfield Industries is making an adapter plate, Spec is making a 5.0 flywheel with the 2.3 pattern, then it's just 5.0 clutch and bell stuff ... not a cheap option, but frankly I'm tired of clutch swaps :(
New Exhaust - My down ipe will need re-made because of the much larger bell housing and everything has been chopped up with combo changes over the years. Since I have ot redo the down pipe, it's all getting done over.
Refresh my G Force - Transmission worked flawless most of the season. 2nd gear synvhro is now a little crunchy and it needs some attention around third gear as well. Bascially freshen it with new synchro's plus a few upgrade parts that are new(er) to the market.
First batch of parts came today, lots of little bits but the big part was the new SFI bell ...

LOL, the funny parts is ... I'm not looking to go much faster than the 12.00 deal. I'm just really tired of changing clutches and screwing with this exhaust :D
I will likely make a few more "flat out" attempts after I get a solid shortblock in there ... it ran 122 MPH spraying 3rd & 4th only so I do think there is a 10.9999 in there ;)

Bob, I really like the SVO wing on your Capri. I now have one and the question I have is do you know where I can get the brackets that stiffin up the wing. I saw them on a SVO a few years ago. This will be my winter project along with putting 4:30's in the rear. I'm looking for low 10's.

My buddy Jason Franklin makes some. Contact him at Turboj74@att.net (FWIW, he has a spectacular SVO)

He is over in Canton and makes up batches of 10 or so from time to time. Tell him you know me ;)
On my car, it's just a piece of plastic that Mike made. Works really well. There is also a template out there on the internet somewhere where you can print it and cut them from plexiglass, sorry I dont have a link any more.

Getting my new short block out of "involentary long term storage" at the machine shop is the driver for my schedule at this point. Thinking about buying him a new calendar before the 1 year anniversary of when I dropped it off to be assembled.
^^^ lots of sarcasm
But seriously the plan is fit all this up / get it indexed on the new short block before I put it all in. I just can't narrow that down right now :(
I do have all the parts for the new exhaust and the upgrade / refresh parts for the G Force ... Likely going to do the trans over Christmas.

Trans parts are bits I pieced together from a number of vendors. It's Tremec parts for the synchros, the billet slider keys & bronze shift pads are from The Gear Box, solid bearing retainer is from Astro, etc ... Trans needs freshened and some of these was little upgrades we didn't put in last year.

I guess this would solve the hard to find 2.3 C-4 Bell and puts a SFI C-4 Bell in the 2.3 game.
Maybe I will take the offer!

Offer still stands, but it's not that Easy ... The converter pilot into the crank is the issue ... Andrew and I worked through that math and you would need a spacer on the crank under the flex plate plus a thicker adapter plate. The pilot on the converter is the issue unless you machine the crank like a 5.0 ... Also, no one is making the SFI flex plate (reactor said no). Andrew and I planed to adapt the bolt pattern on the crank spacer when we laid that whole scheme out.
Also FWIW, QuickTime makes the SFI 2.3 bell to C4. The first ones was wrong, but I heard they fixed that.
One other FYI... For the first time EVERYTHING in my system will be SFI cert, flywheel, clutch assembly, and Bell housing ...that makes me happy :)

Another big part of my winter plans is a fresh shortblock. Nothing exotic, stock displacement, good rods (finally!), good pistons, basically a solid foundation. Spent the day at the shop checking all the clearances ... Just need to do the final hone, one more cleaning, then it's ready to assemble ...

Like anything, depends on your deffinaition of "good" and what options you want. The buy in on a Crower rod is like $100.00 each... Add in bushed ends, capscrew, etc and you end up at ~$120.00 rod ...

I'm working on a short winter, I have a pipe dream about being ready to run NMRA Bradenton March 7-10th ... I will need to be together and running to make this a little ahead to shake down and break in the clutch. Key issues is that a hige pice of my plan isnt shipped yet. and I dont go a lot further without it.
If I get done early, I have a converible to turbo swap so it's ready for Norwalk in June ...
I got a text message that "It's a Chrismas Miracle", my engine is done... Apparently he buttoned up the oil pan today.

Bob.....I think you are the only one doing ANY work on your car this winter. Keep it up!
Martin0660
01-04-2013, 09:05 PM
I'm not sure if any of you have ever indexed a bell housing ... This is the first one I've done outside the car so you can see the set-up.
Dial indicator on a mag base. Mag base is on the flywheel, and the bellhousing is bolted up. Set up the dial indicator on ZERO at the bottom ...
http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa324/martin0660pb/3DC73D7C-792F-4775-885A-7955F8B830E7-12992-0000121EBBB39649.jpg
Rotated the crank shaft 180 degrees and get a reading ...
http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa324/martin0660pb/7F51FEA6-AE46-4FE1-A01D-738ADE5D9C78-12992-0000121EB808FD69.jpg
In this case it is .030 difference top to bottom and dead on side to side. For what it's worth, I also reset the dial indicator to ZERO on the top and spin it over to the bottom to endure it's the same reading and not something in my set-up.
You take 1/2 the total reading (.015) and order the closest offset dowels made (available .007, .014, .021). So in my case I need ot order the .014 offset pins, and that should put me within the .005 allowable error (should be .001 or better).
I always do mine, but this was the first time I had it out where I could get pictures.

To be determined once I bolt the actual clutch and pressure plate up. Likely wont be needed with this new set-up, but i'll put the port in just in case ;)
You can probably squeeze a few more .001's by playing around with the bolts and a hammer.
It's a good news / bad news deal ... With the dowels and countersunk bolts on the 2.3 side there is no play in the system ... On the V8 side the dowels are pretty much a light press fit, so no play. The offset dowels will get me where I need to be.

I thought I answered this ... For a while they was making these out of a hardened high alloy steel. Apparently they broke more frequently than the Tremec parts bend.

Lowest gate stting will be 21.5 then up from there with the controller. My controller maxes out at "X" PSI above the gate spring so with the package that was in there, I couldnt get up to / over 30 ;) Now it should be no problem :biglaugh:

Here is a testiment to these little engines ...
The short block in my car came from a core pile at a rebuilder. Was in good shape, but unknown history. Put a few fresh gaskets / seals on it, flushed the oil , then threw it in my car 2 1/2 seasons ago when I shortened a set of rods. This bone stock short block has made several hundred passes all leaving off a clutch drop on the limiter, thousands of street miles because I drive the car all the time, went through me learning to tune Megasquirt, spraying nitrous, and in general god awe full abuse .... Pulled the head off today getting ready to install my built bullet and you can still see the factory hatch in the cylinders ...

I still plan to run True Street at 12.00. The car should be able to run 11.50 pretty well on boost (might try some 11.50 index stuff), then with a small shot got for a 10.999. I think all three are doable and should be substantially more durable with the new clutch combo.

I really want a Coyote Stock legal car. This is the only class that interest me Bob, I have a feeling that it's going to be the most popular heads up class this year and for many years to come if the NMRA can make it! I have considered using my 95 for this and is one of the smaller reasons I bought it, a notch would be a much better choice though:goodidea:
Martin0660

I really looked at things hard last year. To build a class legal car I would generally loose a season. When I looked at my work schedule it was pretty apparent I would loose two seasons now as I wouldn't have the time to get a car ready to roll out for next spring. I had this shortblock at the shop being built, so it made sence to go this way right now.
I've been watching the class close and talking with several of the guys racing in it now. There are going to be several new cars for next year for sure. What I'm worried about is them pulling their BS and messing with the rules package ... The auto guys want weight off and bolt together converters ... If they get that the stick guys want soft lok clutches ... It's such a nice package now but these few tweaks could let it get out of control pretty fast.
The payout for the class is only $500 to win, but if you build the car right based on contingency they see $5,000 to win (that using 70% of what's available). People are starting to see that and see they can race for a decent purse (both win and runner up). Lots of buzz about that ... Add in that Strange occasionally throws out some bonus money and the attention the class is getting and it makes sence.
My concern is always with them screwing with the rules to "even out" and letting the cost get out of control. That's the NMRA track record :(

I totally agree with everything you said Bob. Before the Coyote stock class, I struggled constantly about whether I should get involved in heads up racing or not. There is so much that goes into heads up racing and racing in general, it's really hard for me to justify the commitment. Since the Coyote Stock class was born, I have been rethinking my previous decision to not get involved but I share the same concerns as you.
It would also be much easier if money just grew on trees:D

Bob I have the car you need
Which one? LOL, actually I would lean to a SN-95 or New Edge car for this class believe it or not. You are allowed up to a 28-10 slick but have to have stock wheel wells ... much better fit if with the later cars over a fox, plus if you arent running "class legal" you could get even more tire on the car for other racing. That's one of the pluses of this rules package, they race at 3200#'s on a 28-10 (several guys run 26-10) ... That said, it would be tough for me to skip over a 4 eye car ;)
Oddly enough, buying a "good roller" might not be the best option because you are leaving contingency on the table. As an example, there is $300/$150 for using the Maximum motorsports roll bar ... just making the finals a few times pays for it versus buying a car with a bar in it and loosing that chance ... same thing with suspension, brakes, axles, etc, etc ... To make this work, you sort of have to build within the contingency list otherwise you leave might leave a lot of purse on the table.
It would also be much easier if money just grew on trees:D
I hear that, i've shaken a few tree's without much luck ;) I really fear where the NMRA is going to end up. The good news is the sponsors still keep putting money in, and I think adding Norwalk was a huge benefit. They just loose credibility with guys over the rules packages ... who will be actually running in the "new" class that married SSO and Outlaw? It was a good idea, but they lost the racers.

Your hood looks great and did you find out anything about those other stickers? With that tint and hood what do you think you will pick up on the DYNO?;)
:woot1: big power gains with tint

I will upload pictures and videos later, but had a good dyno session ....
On boost 414 RWHP / 409 Torque
On a 50 shot 518 RWHP / 540 Torque
Needless to say, I'm happy ( and its still really safe)

Combined effects ... It is a NX jet tune up, so it's a rear wheel shot ... add in the cooling effects of IAT's and that it picks up boost on the spray ... yep.

One more point, the "Boost" number above was set-up for racing it in True Street. When we was dialing in the boost, I got too much in there and made a pull at 30 PSI :D
It made 449/459 at that boost ;)

At this point, everything is pretty much attached to the car as planned for this winters projects and got the tune dialed in where I can start racing ...
Got to drive it a bunch today, but it's going back into storage tomorrow until late April. I've got to go out of town (country) for work so it should be nice weather and hard racing when I get home. Hopefully when I get back all it should need is an oil change, a good nut and bolt check, and clean it up to go race.
A few pictures ;)
