View Full Version : Rebuilding my T5 WC...Any input appreciated

My T5 WC (from a 93 GT) decided that it didn't feel like letting me into 3-4 late last year so I've decided to rebuild it. Taking it all apart I found lots of play, leaking rear main, bad clutch, p-plate, fly-wheel, broken shifter fork, worn shifter etc etc...Looks like this is gonna be a $1000+ job! :(

Since the rebuild kits don't include new shifter forks, can any of you tell me where you have gotten new ones? Am I locked in to the dealer on that? I have a Ford book that shows that all 3 forks are the same PN but the dealer tells me they are not. 1-2 & 3-4 are $70+ and 5th/R is around $40. What have you used?

Any other general info on the rebuild is appreciated. I'm not a stranger to rebuilding things but this is a first for me...

Thanks!

Find a good used one and replace all the fork pads. They make a seal and bushing kit for the tail. I would replace both. If you have a stock shifter that is most likely where the broken shift fork came from. By yourself a good shifter. If you have alot of play check the inpuf shaft and cluster gear teeth and make sure they arent worn.

Thanks! I was gonna use the Ford Racing rebuild kit that has all that in there I believe. I had an older Hurst shifter on there but the rubber ball where the shifter pivots had A LOT of play in it. That could have been the cause...Thinking I'll replace it with the MGW shifter.

Since I wrote this I actually found a few sites that sell OEM new shifter forks for around $20! I'll share some links and info later. You can buy brass fork pads too...

The springs in that shifter are broke. Happens all the time. They make a kit for it to replace them. The shifter might be wore as well so might just be better to buy a new one. I like the old hurst and pro 5.0

Interesting! Do I have to go directly to Hurst for the replacements or does Summit etc sell them?

Summit should or anyone that sells hurst stuff

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fms-m-7003-z/overview/make/ford why not get something like that.

Probably could get it even cheaper from someone like tousley ford

The bulk of the cost is everything in front of the trans (clutch kit, fly-wheel etc plus a new shifter). The parts to rebuild the T5 itself will be around $400. Thanks though.

oh missed that part. I hate T5's In high school we rebuilt my buddies at least once a month it seemed lucky we had a friend who owned a ford dealer that had piles of T5's to sift thru to find the parts we needed.

haha! I guess I'm lucky then...Been beating the pants off of this one for the better part of 15 years! Of course I don't put many miles on each year but the miles are hard ones! ;)

Update: Out of curiosity, I took the Hurst shifter apart. The springs were fine but I discovered that the section of the main casting that the pivot of the shifter handle rests in was cracked so a new shifter is a definite. MGW here I come! :)

I also found some great sources for T5 parts and knowledge. I've talked to people at 2 of the 3 and they were extremely helpful. Here's some links:

http://www.astroperformance.com (http://www.astroperformance.com/)

Keep in mind that Borg is owned by Tremec and therefore most of the FRP stuff out there is just re-branded Tremec or Valeo parts. These guys have the shift forks for <$20 each ($70+ at the dealer) and King Cobra clutch kit for only $149 ($219 at Summit & Jegs etc) ! Definitely give them a try if you're in my shoes.

Furthermore, Aero (thanks Ron!:goodidea:) has re-manufactured transmissions that will handle 450 HP & 350 Tq for around $1400 if you want to go that route. I never knew you could build a T5 that strong!

I'll post more as things progress...

I think Astro builds 1 to handle 650hp/585 torque now. But it's not cheap.

Thses arent that cheap but are the best T5 you can buy. Far better quality than G Force and the gear teeth are alot thicker and the oiling holes are alot better as well

Welp...Got the most of it apart and realized how much dedicated press work this is going to take. The problem is, I don't have easy access to one big enough for the job. :( Anyone want to learn how to rebuild one of these (with me...trial by fire) & a case of beer in exchange for the use of a press & shop for the night? ;)

If you were closer i'd do it. You really dont need a press unless the back cluster bearing is stubborn.

Thanks! Have you just tapped them into place with a hammer? Use a puller for removal?

If you have the bearing puller that you would use for the press just put it on and tap the main shaft with a hammer. Should slide off

OK...I think I can get my hands on those. Tap them on as well?

It has 2 blocks that wedge under the bearing and 2 pieces if all thread that tighten the blocks underneath the bearing

Well guys...I chickened out and let Mark at Mars Transmissions put the trans back together for me and I got it installed and running over the weekend! Runs nice...Loving the MGW shifter but some how or another I didn't get the 100HP bump I was hoping for! Haha :goodidea:

Loving the MGW shifter

I love my MGW too ... I was pretty comittied to Pro 5.0 until mine wore out (yes, I wore one out). Picked up a MGW used and likely wouldnt ever use anything else now.

Haha! Pieces of my old Hurst shifter were laying in my tail case. Banging gears is fun at any cost! :3gears:

Thanks man! :awsome:
