Does anyone follow Drag Week? Last years winner in the Unlimited class ran in the 6's all week.....they have to drive from track to track, no support vehicles, five days in a row and the route covered 1,000 miles. That is just sick! This year it's Day 2 and the fastest ET is a 6.54. I'd LOVE to do this some year in the DD class.

You only haul to the start of the race. After that there are no support teams or vehicles. You can tow a trailer with the race vehicle with extra stuff though. I have an aluminum 5x5x4 box trailer that would be awesome.

Ah I see. That makes sense. Sure would be fun! I guess I should read all the rules.

Took me a little to find the results link. You can click on the image of the graph and it will open in a new tab, where you can make it larger for easier reading.

It was there and gone before I even realized it. If they did an east coast swing again I would be ALL over it.

Joe, I was the announcer that day. It was awesome.
Lutz punched a hole in the head in his next to last pass, thrashes, goes to a machine shop, gets the head weldedand some work done to the block, comes back, gets it back together, and runs 6.94 at 213.

There is a live feed out there too. Warning: Just about impossible to be productive if you turn it on! :D

Lutz wins it overall. Jeff Oppenheim had a nice week it looks like too, in his El Camino. The Chisholm/Stasiak '55 Chevy finished 2nd in the Gasser class, and did an awesome wheelstand on Saturday, literally putting it on the bumper.

I saw that pass.....insane.
He drove it there but once he arrived an entire pit crew came out of no where to swap the entire truck over to "race mode".........cooling system, suspension, fuel system, doors, etc.

Larson just is playing by the "rules" now ... they announced Unlimited would remain unlimited, so he did it by his definition, still a cab with a VIN number (his complaint on the tube chassis pro mods). He built a street truck that converts to race mode, pretty slick approach.
I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that even his Nova when it rolled in they added the charge pipes and a whole pile of stuff before racing when it was at PRP. In my opinion, no different than us guys driving to the track, swapping tires and loosing street stuff, then racing ... just he is doing it a lot f'ing faster :D I love it, it will piss off the pro mod guys ;)

And FWIW, after loosing this season to work overseas, I should get a pretty easy year next summer so I'm looking to do the DD class next year. My buddy Dale did it this year (DNF because of a clutch issue) but said it was an absolute blast.

Before someone goes on a rant about what "street car" is, let me just say:
:deadhorse:
I agree with you, Bob, making the truck into race mode is the same as me swapping to slicks at the track, putting the air pan on for the hood scoop, etc. Larson and other DW competitors just do it on a much, much larger scale.
I would love to do it some year too, hope you can do it next year. Mark and I were talking about what we'd build, having fun tossing ideas around. I like the idea of a wagon, and turbo is an easy way to make power, but I think NA on pump gas would be my preference.

I'm not going on a "street car" rant. What these guys do is just bad ass!!
In my understanding...DW was meant to be a race about who can build the fastest hot rod and have no support vehicles to follow along with extra parts. But when your entire pit crew tags along behind and swarms the car once it arrives at the track that seems to get away from the original intent (again...IMO...which is worth what you paid to read this post). On one of the broadcasts I even heard Frieburger refer to "Larsons bogus pit crew".

By allowing the trailers from the outset, they sure allowed extra parts, and expected it. What get's overshadowed by the "unlimited" class guys is EVERY other class there is full of hard core racers that mostly drive, swap tires, add fuel, then race. I do wish they would allow driver and passenger and those be the ONLY ones allowed to touch the car but it's not my sandbox. Frankly I think Larson would adapt to that and just change how things swap easier.
Hot Rod had a few very good posts on their blog that their intention with unlimited was to let it run wild. They know it's not a poor guys class, and didn't want someone to have to say "worlds fastest street car with (insert your restriction here)". There has long been debate about some guy in England and a few others that say theirs is faster "street cars", obviously Hot Rod wants this event to define Worlds Fastest and attract the best. I think Larson shut them all up with that pass, and remember that is a new truck, that likely has room to grow.
That all said, when that truck is in "race mode" it's so far from a street vehicle it's stupid. I applaud him exploiting the rules, but no radiator, on alky, no trans cooler, etc, etc ... Frankly, it's likely not even a very good "race car" in that mode, it simply takes advantage of the rules, show up, swap it around, make ONE pass (or more if you need better), drive to next track, repeat. If he had to go rounds it likely would struggle with what I read they change / remove.
I love it,
Dan B.
