Why does it seem that sellers think these things are worth a mint? I'm looking for my next project and I am OPEN to anything. I've built fast cars, high trucks and stuff in between. Never done a Wrangler for myself...but have done them for other people. Heck, I'm putting a lift on one this afternoon! But why does it seem that every one out there has a bunch of miles, fair condition, 15yrs old and still asking $6k, $7k or more. With there being 1.4 kajillion (literally!!) of them on the road you would think they would be cheaper.

When I was shopping around before I bought the Explorer I wanted a Wranger Tj. I ran into the same problem. People wanted an absurb amont of money for a 97+ with a ton of miles. I used to have a 92 Yj Wranger I built up. It had 4.5" suspension lift, 1" boomerang shackles, 35s, olive drab, beat to hell and back. I remember the 4 cyclinder, 5 speed and 35s on the highway was suiscide. Top speed was 50 mph. I loved it though. No doors and top was the best.

It is one domestic vehicle that holds its value....when we were shopping for the wife's I was shocked at prices. It was actually cheaper for her to get a couple year old model than 5-6 year old one. She didn't want new due to it being used for work(mail carrier) but several used ones were priced above new.

They are tanks and will live forever with very little maintenance and most parts are cheap

Dunno. I do like them, but for what they are, prices are absurd. Its a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand. :jackit:

I was on a kick a few months ago wanting an older one. Like the 70's CJ. Found a few in the $1500-2000 range. Go and look at em and they are rotted out. Granted, you can buy every single part new but what's the point then. So I bought a 68 chevy c10 instead.

I also didn't know they were as heavy as what they are. I about fell off my couch when i saw on Horsepower tv that they weigh (new ones) almost 4,000 lbs. WTF, there's hardly anything to them.

Indeed. For some reason I really like the new Cherokee Trailhawk though. I was turned off the first time I rode in an old soft top jeep back from IUP in the winter. loose old top flapping, couldn't hear the guy sitting beside me, and me freezing my ass off. As a toy maybe but never as a DD. I think I'm leaning towards a new Chevy Colorado z71 as my next daily.

I was talking about older, used Jeeps. Newer models seem nice - but the old Wranglers just seem to have high resale value for no good reason.

Keep in mind they are cheap and easy to fix. We just did a brake job on my buddy's wifes older jeep and he bought loaded calipers instead of just pads....the loaded calipers were only somewhere around $35 I beleive....plus they go just about anywhere even with bald tires

I don't think the new models even seem that great compared to the other suvs out there now. Not enough power for the size of them and crappy gas mileage. I think they look cool as hell but for their specs as a daily driver and price your better off getting a full size truck. Just my opinion mind you. With a truck, at least you can haul more and tow more for the same price and similar gas mileage. I was looking at getting a low mileage used one when I ended up with my focus. Nothing impressed me about it for how much they wanted for it. It may have been great off road but how often am I really gonna be doing that compared to driving to work. Maybe it makes me metrosexual but I'd much rather have my wife's 13 Escape SEL with the 2.0 ecoboost than a new jeep.

Ever since the four door wranglers came out the two door ones do nothing for me. I wouldn't mind having one, but like has been stated throughout this thread, they're way too expensive for what they are.

I figure its no big deal as long as the market stays that way. Can always get your money back. I like how crude they are. My daughter bought a new one in 12 and it had good power while still having the fairly harsh ride.

But don't forget...I like just about everything. However...a 1966 Toronado does get the juices flowing for me...as do Lincoln Mk II's and Mk III's...and older Buick Riveras...and...

Getting it later this week. Just went to look today and see where it was. Gave a deposit.

It's the baby Ranger.....a 1984. 2wd, short bed, 2.0L and 4 speed. Good chassis, outside of the body is straight but paint is rough...mainly the clear coming off, rockers are solid. Bed is blue, cab is black. Will need floor pans and the interior swapped...currently a bad mix of house carpet, tan, black and red. But for the wallet killing price of $300 (yes, only two zero's after the three) I can work with it. The pans will be $100. I'll start another thread when I get it home and start ripping.

Current the master plan (subject to change at any second) is an EFI 5.0 w/ T5, slightly lowered, buckets with some other interior upgrades, flat paint (maybe blue), and Explorer rear w/ discs. I'd like to do some brake upgrades to the front. Want it to be a daily driver...not shiny like the 387W truck.

I like Wranglers. I do feel they over pay for them. A lot of them I have seen are in pretty rough shape like others have said. I would like to have one to play with but never will as like a lot of others I just don't have money to throw away on one for a toy. It's enough to try and deal with what I got half the time.

You missed my reply in the Subby thread. Bought wife a 2010 Outback, I took her 2000 Outback so now the 1990 sets in the garage next to my 2001 F-150 and 1985 387W Ranger. My DD isn't a true every day driver.....I rotate based on my mood and the weather. The '90 is just too dang clean to run in the slop. It would be the best candidate for a 5.0/T5, but again that thing is like a virgin......never been hacked up or added on to. The '84 I just bought will be chopped beyond current recognition if I build it.

BTW.......between my F-150 and three Rangers, I have truck issues!! The F has only seen road time twice since Thanksgiving.

yes...yes i did...

i vote 5.0/t-5 the clean one....although the front of the 80's ones are way better looking...are they interchangeable like fox body cars?
