Which plate would you choose

I have a purple antique plate on my wagon now that I have had for many years. I am thinking about putting a 1973 plate on it instead since the state now lets you do that. The 73 plate is the bicentennial one with the Liberty bell on it. Would you use the purple plate or the 73 plate. I would still keep the purple plate for future use if I go with the 73 plate. Also the car retains the antique status with the 73 plate. I already have an old inspection sticker on it.

I have used that plate on multiple cars. Why wouldn't I be able to use it again?

They may let you use it with the mv11v and the extra $75. The antique and classic plates now have to follow the new color scheme. People hate the tri colored plates now...I personally like the purple/white antique or the white/purple classic plates....This is what I have been told by the DOT...If they let you put the purple plate on another car that's awesome. ..state has been cracking down on alot of things lately.

i worked in the bowls of penndot for 12yrs (thankfully in the field).....and can tell you for a facts that the walking dead in that unit are lucky to get out their front door daily without choking on their own drool. To make them think at work would be absolute overload, many would have total system overload and fall into a quivering pile of mush. That in turn causes paperwork for the other brain dead minions. So less plate choices keep the workplace safe.

Definitely use the old one. That all purple plate is terrible. I just got a new antique plate for my truck and it isn't too bad, but I hate that old purple one. If you happen to have another 73 Bicentennial plate or you want to sell the one you have, let me know. I wouldn't mind running it on my truck.

I had to do some searching to clear up my confusion, thinking it was a '76 plate:

It sure seems like there is not a lot of mental decisions in Penndot. Here is my complaint regarding plates. If you have a Classic or Antique Plate on your car, you can transfer it to another owner if he buys that car. If you sell a car that was a Classic or Antique to someone out of state, you can use those plates on another vehicle for yourself and ONLY yourself.

There is a lot of potential revenue for Penndot if someone could buy a classic or antique plate from a person who no longer has a use for the plate and transfer the plate (with the fee) over to someone else. Penndot would get revenue with the fee without spending resources to make a new plate. Again, from what you are saying, the "Penndot Walking Dead" heads would explode like a giant zit if this concept was presented.

Can someone reactive plates like the old bicentennial plates? I thought the general license plates need to be the current colors? I doubt if they are transferable between people like the classic/ antique plates.


Also removal of an Antique plate for a car to a regular plate means the inspection and emissions bullshit. $70 every year does not seem like a good thing especially since some antique vehicles are at potential for failing inspection.

Don - you can transfer an existing specialty plate to a new owner if you sell him the car. Cost is the same $75 to the state - at least it used to be $75. But the seller gets nothing from that. PA pockets the $$. Seller has to write a notarized note to surrender the plate.

I agree 100%. The problem is transferring plates, classic, antique or bi-centennial to a vehicle where those specific plates were not the previously registered to the person. If I have a plate that I am not using, I should be able to surrender it to someone who wants it, they pay a fee and Penndot can reinstate/transfer that plate to the person who wants it. That is not the case in PA. That is why you can go on Ebay and buy classic and antique plates that are used for hanging on a wall in a man-cave but can not be transferred to any vehicle.

I am not trying to hijack this post just state that this is sad for people who would spend money to transfer/ register a plate that they did not previously have because Penndot is one dimensional. Look at all the free money that would be available to PA that they will never see.

Although buses and trucks are eligible for antique, classic and vintage registration plates, buses MAY NOT be used to transport passengers and trucks MAY NOT haul cargo.

Would anything I put in the bed of the truck be considered cargo? Sometimes I take my truck to car shows or concerts and might have a cooler and some chairs in the back.

For anyone who is interested I bought a 1973 PA license plate off Ebay, sent the state a picture of it along with the fee of course, and 3 weeks later got the new owners card. It still says antique vehicle on it too. I like the way it looks better on that particularly car especially with the AMC dealer license plate frame.
