View Full Version : Shifter Knobs
For all you 3 pedal, gear bangers out there.
Which one's do you like best? I've always liked the Hurst white Q ball.
I had a '69 Goat that had a T-handle that matched the car's paint &
that seemed to work well. Lil' Blackie has a titanium rounded top cylinder
that almost feels soft. I don't like my wife's R32 shifter knob, it is bigger
than a Q ball by a bit & has a machined ring on the upper hemisphere.

I have been through a lot of combo's of arms and handles.
I seem to be better with a longer stick than a shorter one. I had always preferred a simple ball knob.
When I went to the MGW shifter, one of the down sides (maybe the only one) is that you are "stuck" with their arm. I ran it with the Hurst sidewinder knob for a while, and it was ok, but the reach (1 & 3) was a bit long for my liking.
I tried what a heck of a lot of the NMRA heads up guys was doing, went with a Long handle and simply haven't ever looked back. Most of those guys run this on a Tri-Ax style arm, but it works good on my MGW too (I did cut the threads off some to move it down).

For me the feel and fit is natural with this. The Long handle looks off sometimes, but it is just natural for my style of shifting (like a ninja but quicker :D ).

I love the T-45 shifter handle that came stock on a 99 Cobra. Seemed to just be a perfect fit. The 03 stock ball is nice too. I sold the MGW ball to go back to stokc.

Any short throw shifter with the stock knob. Well...almost any shorty shifter.

Right now I have a Steeda triax shifter with an 05+ Hurst handle and a Hurst ball. I love the throwback look and I no longer brand my hand with the stock metal knob in the summer. Perfect length for me. I plan on picking up some cobra anniversary style boots with blue or silver stitching from redline performance in the future. 28133

I have this on my car now

can't go wrong with a big white ball. I have an MGW shifter with the red race handle underneath it. Had a tri-ax previously and like the MGW much better.
I previously had something that looked like a mach 1 knob bought the billet aluminum is annoying...hot in the summer, cold in the winter.

Had a B&M with black ball in the t-bird. When at the track I swapped on the tall gripper style handle. My 00GT has a pro 5.0 with bulrushes aluminum ball. It feels really notchy compared to the B&M. I like a ball handle on the street.

I run a longer chrome hurst shifter with a t- handle. I wanted the old school hurst look. My favorite shift knob was a leather wrapped Thunderbird Turbo Coupe knob with a short throw hurst shifter. It felt cool!

Here is what I currently have. Old school down to the Superboot with the red "H". Good luck finding one of them! My 86 GT is a cruiser so I did the old school look!

Clean that boot Don! :-)
That is a good look.
My wife Cindy wore a hole through the leather cover
on one of those in her Tubo coupe.

Favorite one I have had was a weighted tall one I had on the MGW in my Z06. Keep forgetting to grab one for the Mustang.

I like the stock Terminator shifter style. I had one in my first Mach 1, my Focus, and now in my new Mach 1. I did like the billet ball that came in the Mach 1, but I was more prone to miss shifts at the track if my hands were even a bit sweaty!
