Sold my '14 and all the goodies so I could build something I can sort of afford to stuff into a guardrail/tree/whatever...

'97 M3 automatic, bought it for a starter hillclimb car for my wife. She wants more power, so we picked up a '12 135i.
Car currently has coilovers, 550/700lb springs, stock front bar no rear bar, and every bushing has been replaced front to back. Only real changes I will be making to the suspension are different camber plates, bigger front swybar, aluminum subframe and diff bushings, and flares to cover 285/30r18s on 18x10.5s. Car will be getting a full cage, and gutting the interior of everything except the dash. Still planning to drive it on the street. Currently weighs 3200, goal is to get to 2700 without me in it.
Bought a 98 Camaro LS1/T56. Keeping it simple here. MS4 cam, obviously springs and retainers, LS6 manifold, 47lb. injectors, and I would like to tune it for speed density. Will probably end up with a Diamond Stage 3 clutch, although I haven't made up my mind. Was going to go with a stock LS7 setup but it weighs like 60lbs. Using CXRacing 1 3/4" headers and mounts. Will build 3" exhaust with x-pipe.
Won't be really starting any real work until the end of the month. Still gathering parts, engine still in the car and runs great. If anyone wants a S52 cheap let me know. I will add to the thread as I gather more stuff. Planning on driving it by December.

Cool. They can come take it for a ride before I pull it. Let me know I can have it out next weekend. Will come as complete drop out including accessories.
I'm not up on my BMW stuff but what's the blue car? I really like that.

Mark - are you able to sell the M3 motor to offset your build cost? Seems like that would be a pricey piece.

97 is the last year before CANBUS if recall? that is a good car to swap and plenty of room too.e36 is a lot bigger than e30 for swapping. also another helpful issue is plan on hydroboost to gain clearance around valve covers. i used a mustang hydroboost setup on last e36 swap i did.

I believe CANBUS started with the E46, so '99? I know some of the kits had booster interference, but I don't think this one does. The engine sits low and it is moved towards the pass side to clear the ABS (which I am keeping).

Thanks. I am going to try and clear out my phone and start getting some pics up. Finally brought motor and trans home today. Diamond stage 3 clutch setup will be here in a few days, cam and harness won't be ready until the 29th.

While I was pulling it, got rid of all the AC BS and some wiring. Still a bunch to do with that, will wait until I get the LS in to get rid of anything major. Wasn't bad getting it out, managed to only cut a heater hose my dumbass forgot to disconnect before I had the whole thing hanging from one incredibly shitty Harbor Freight strap.
Pics of header and Diamond Stage 3 clutch..

Couple friends came down from around Philly for our halloween party and brought some goodies. LS harness with bullshit cut out and TSP Magic Stick 4 cam. I bought TSP springs, Ti retainers and pushrods. We got to work swapping everything over..

Was too lazy to pull the heads and didn't want to try the Russian Roulette method of spinning the cam and hoping the lifters didn't fall into the pan, so we turned it upside down.
More ghetto shit, motor is setup for a LS1 manifold so the ribs on the bottom of the LS6 manifold hit the steam tubes, took care of that issue too...

Got everything together, started putting the harness on the engine/trans. He labeled everything so even I couldn't screw it up. Should only be 4 or 5 GM harness to BMW connections I will have to make. Should be dropping it in this weekend. Still have to order O2 sensors and some other random stuff. Rest of fuel system parts should be here tomorrow. Running C5 regulator/filter combo, -6 AN up to rail, 255lph in tank.

Looks pretty much the same. Stay tuned, should have it sitting in the car this weekend. Hopefully running in a few weeks. Need to decide whether to have it mail order tuned or buy HPT and do it myself. Time wise will likely do the mail order thing. Pretty common setup.

Not much done today, threw valvecovers on and installed 255lph fuel pump. Motor and trans go in this weekend.

Well, I realize this is the shittiest build thread in history so far, but I will ad an update anyway. I promise I will make up for it with plenty of track and hillclimb videos come springtime.
Last weekend got the engine and trans in.

The fit of the motor and trans mounts was acceptable IMO for how cheap this kit is. The oil pan is really close to the k member, so it is low as can be which I am happy with. This kit is marketed to clear the abs lines, which is the main reason I went with it. Didn't clear them at all...
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k640/Hillclimb95/341C4768-50AD-4E97-A47B-084576785728_zps3kfeevgb.jpg (http://s1119.photobucket.com/user/Hillclimb95/media/341C4768-50AD-4E97-A47B-084576785728_zps3kfeevgb.jpg.html)
Took that picture after I had lowered ABS unit around 2". Ended up working perfectly. Lines are as far away as most I see with relocated units, will cover lines and unit with heat shield or wrap headers after I get car back from cage guy. Have to get this thing running and interior gutted by mid december so the fine tuning stuff can wait. Picture also shows primary very close to coil pack, will likely just space up a bit and toss a 90 degree boot on. Other than that the headers went in very easily. Close to trans, but it all looks like it will play nice with each other.
Mark Aubele
11-12-2016, 11:43 AM
The valvecovers are also really close to the brake booster. Looks like it won't hit. Trans is also touching tunnel in a couple places. No biggie, will clearance it later.
No picture of it, but got my JTR flange in, allows me to use 1310 u joints front and rear. Having custom driveshaft made. They sell them for the swap but they are like $700. No thanks.
Also stuck a 255lph pump in the tank.

Got tired of being covered in 20 years of Kraut leakage, so moved on into interior removal.

This was just was under the rear seat. Consistently amazed at how heavy BMW interior shit is. Every little piece I touch seems to weigh five pounds.
Started removing tar paper from floor, came off the floor from rear seat area rearward like this by hand...

Not sure what kind of weight I'm going to drop removing it, but the garbage can is getting heavier and the car is sitting higher and higher. Car was just over 3200 before I started all this with 1/2 tank of fuel. Planning on weighing it before it goes in for the cage. Trying to keep cage as minimalist as possible while staying legal.
Gonna bet fuel system buttoned up this weekend, get steering shaft in and some other odds and ends. Hopefully figure out wiring (not my forte) next weekend and start this thing in a couple weeks.

Yes! I fully agree too. I think I'm going to get Kayden a playmate here soon. I was kinda bummed when I didn't get the other one. I just feel bad for the environment he's in right now. Not wanted and neglected. I can't make them give him to me though. Unfortunately.

We got the female first, and she was absolutely insane. Non stop 100% of the time. Got the male and they fought until they were bloody daily for a month until she cemented her alpha status. After that they were still kind of nuts as all huskies are but they kind of just keep each other entertained.

Yeah it is pretty frustrating! Ours are houdinis. Fence, electric fence, exercise, and they would still escape all the time. Once they ended up like 5 miles away covered in blood and smelling like creek. Still no clue what those assholes were doing. They would usually come back eventually that time I guess that got lost and just kept going. And they kill everything. I think the garbage men thought it was Silence of the Lambs in our house. Nothing to do with all the animals they killed than put them in the garbage.

Supposed to drop both cars off end of December. Trying to get it back by end of January so I can get the flares on and the rear bushings done and start hitting some events as early as possible.

Been awhile since I made an update. Don't even know where to start...
Photo a couple posts back shows the dash out. A friend of mine stopped out over the weekend and we pulled the dash out, pulled the pass airbag, HVAC, and gutted anything unnecessary, put it back in. Can now be removed in about 5-10 min.

Also installed pedal assembly to get rid of the hideous 2 pedal setup. Once car is running will clean up the harness. Not cutting shit out until I know it isn't needed.

Custom driveshaft using stock T56 yoke with JTR flange. 1310 U joints. 3" .085 steel. Would've gone with aluminum but can't fit more than 3" and I don't want it exploding on me at 150mph. A little heavier than I would like but whatever.

"Fuel system" setup using a factory C5 filter/regulator, and -6 up to factory LS1 rail. Found a push on fitting for the factory rail that replaces the troublesome Russel fitting that simply pushes on, this is secured on the backside with a nut. No picture of this.

PS pressure line. After visiting exactly one place that makes hydraulic lines, I got annoyed at trying to get the BMW rack side mated with the GM side, and spent $110 on line and wacky fittings to make one..

The return is a simple matter of extending and reducing the rubber side of the factory hose.

Millernaught came over and we started wiring it all up. Ended up cutting the factory BMW harness since I am getting scrap offers for the S52 and I would frankly rather use it as a table than give it away. Only four wires are going to the BMW side, kept the rest for later in case I want to wire something in. The engine side is taken care of by a separate fuse panel with ECM, starter, and fan relays. Getting there.

Got it to crank Sunday night. Hp Tuners came yesterday, deleted VATS and some other things and tried to start. Looking like a bad (brand new) fuel pump. Nasty open header idle vid hopefully coming soon.

Before the cage goes in and very low fuel load, but much lighter than expected. Still has full power doors and all stock glass.

It runs, trying to refine the tune a bit as it runs pig rich. Slowly learning HPT. I will try to get a vid up this weekend of it idling. Started gutting doors, have gone through like 437 discs so far. Seems to be around 12lb a door plus window in extra steel that can be removed. Really hoping to get it around 2600 ready to race.

Yeah it's been a while. Been working on the car consistently. Cooling system all hooked up, seat in. Had a chance to drive the car last Friday, and it's pretty silly. The lightness is really apparent. Even down probably 40hp (tune is still off and saw some knock, drivers header is hitting engine), it feels retarded. Was hilarious pulling into Hermanie BP and seeing all the hillbillies wonder why a gay blue BMW was doing a pretty good impression of a cup car with the nasty cam and open exhaust. Some pictures...
Final weight before it goes to cage guy. Still has 40lb stock battery, 1/4 tank of fuel. Previous weight was empty fuel load, no seat, before doors were gutted and a bunch of wiring removed.

Still think we have more weight to pull out. Still has heavy stock hood and trunk.

Cleaned up wiring dramatically. Floor will get painted after cage is in.

Not perfect, but I cut them out with a Harbor Freight angle grinder. Gonna use something else on the fenders. Looks like I can get a lot more of the crashbars but nearly impossible to get more than I got. Only weighed like 3 lb a door, whats left may be a pound.

how much weight do you expect to add with rollbar and other safety gear?

I expect the cage to add 80-100lbs, some of which will be offset by a lighter battery and some more weight reduction. Hoping to stay around 2600-2650 ready to race.

Haven't posted much, but here is outside video before I locked the motor up (oil starvation). Made it a total of 4 runs between two autocrosses (and street tuning and a ton of dyno pulls).

No luck yet haven't really tried very hard. S52/auto trans, includes computer for engine and trans. Ran perfect when removed $1000.

Between the exhaust and cage, I added 190lbs. Sitting at 2700 without driver.
