View Full Version : Winter Upgrades

Being that racing season is coming up in a few months, I was just curious to see what everyone had planned for their winter upgrades this year.

Mine is pretty simple, get the head freshened up at the machine shop (exhaust valve seal sucks, bad), and build a fuel system for e85. Probably twin Walbro 450LPH high pressure pumps and some sort of 2000cc injector, as well as adding a flex fuel sensor to make everything happy. Maybe trying to add paddle shifters to the auto. My trans controller makes it easy to add them in.

Perhaps a new set of wheels and tires... definitely tires.

That's about it. General maintenance stuff and enjoying the auto stuff other than that.

What about you guys?

I plan to add a two step and line lock that I have had here for way to long and some 35 spline axles and a spool to the 12 , and then a bias tire

Get the trans out and down to Wholesale Transmission for a freshen up. Cam swap, touch more lift and a different profile. Engine diaper.

1) Get race trans back together and in.
2) Don't spend anymore money on car unless something breaks.

Hopefully I've got the running part under control so time to cover up the rust. I'm thinking I'd better order tires for the MG in case the Bird isn't done

Short list with a late start for me:

New Intake (better ported lower and plenum upper) and a new cam (Have it around).

Weight reduction - going to revamp water cooling lines around engine, eliminate oil cooler circuit, misc. stuff to take a gallon of water out of the system. Manual brakes are on the agenda, but I keep going back and forth on actually doing it. If I don't go with the big cam I might keep the power brakes. Lots of little details to trim, remove, etc ... Trying to get another 50# out of the car. Hard to find right now and still keep all the street car stuff in place .... heater box is looking like a casualty especially with the safety upgrades adding weight. ;)

Safety - I've come to the point I need to deal with the engine diaper rules. I keep looking under the car and debating between trying to modify an existing diaper to fit to building a pan. Neither are easy or attractive so I keep putting it off. I also need a new helmet for this year, current is Snell 2005 and kept getting reminded by NMRA that 2016 was the last year for it :(

Exhaust To be determined ... Never thought what I had was restrictive, but the car really picked up when I dropped it at the end of last year ... more bigger and more lighter somehow.

I think next year I'm going to back off the NMRA / NMCA stuff and do more local stuff. Over-all goal, somewhere, some time, I want the car to run a 9.99 next season but that likely wont come until fall.

Already put in a g Force t5 and new clutch and associated parts.

Have another upper intake laying around that I plan to use to get rid of the remote mounted iac valve. Just ordered a new throttle body for said revamp.

Otherwise that is about it. I've been collecting parts for a stroker for next winter.

I don't know why, but NMRA was on us every race. Their stance is 10 years (2005 to 2015) plus one year (2016). Probably time for a new one anyway, lots of summer passes in that thing, lol. FWIW, they also beat on me to move to a SA helmet although it was a suggestion. Wasn't just me, telling everyone with a 2005 to have a new one for next year.

new front runners
clean up wiring
install battery box

I am pretty certain IHRA and NHRA go 12 years from the date of the helmet, unless otherwise outlined in the rules. Interesting NMRA is shorter. My Impact is SA2005, and still feels like a good piece. Until I have to move to a new one, I'm going to keep running it. I'll go to Impact again when it's time to buy.

I read the IHRA link, and probably beating a dead horse, but either the way I said it, or 12 years is the same thing

2005-2009 = 5 years
2010-2014= 5 years
2015 = year 11
2016= year 12

I cant find direct links to NHRA rule book and I don't know anyone with a 2017 yet, but found this on class racer:

NHRA Helmet Expiration Dates

Label Expires
Snell 2000 1/1/2012
Snell 2005 1/1/2017
Snell 2010 1/1/2022
SFI 31.1A 1/1/2014
SFI 31.2A 1/1/2014

Dunno, just going with what I was told too. Nobody locally has looked at my helmet date in years, but two of the most checked things when I travel are belt dates and helmet date.

Swapping to a fresh second generation DSM head, Lancer Evolution 3 intake manifold, FIC 2150CC injectors, Twin walbro 450HP pumps, and flex fuel setup.

Good progress!
My car is running great, but it's not track ready. I need to get the race trans together and installed, slicks mounted/screwed, and high boost tune dialed in. I doubt I'll get it track ready until soccer and cub scouts are over sometime in May-June.

The '14 is mostly done - suspension upgrades installed ( coil-overs, watts link, LCA's and relo brackets ). Still have to get a rear sway bar that will clear the watts, and get the car aligned and tuned. Hoping for low 12's on stock tires.

'66 upgrades are underway - parts are all here - installing new tubular front LCA's, strut rods, new master cylinder and big disc brakes all around. Then bigger fuel line - might sump the tank, alignment, tires, and a bunch of little fixes.

Waaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy behind where I want or need to be. Last year I broke 2 transmissions and a cylinder head before the end of March. I still see mine as two weeks out assuming nothing bites me. Still don't have my upper intake yet, that's going to be my pace setter.

I totally feel your pain there. I was hoping to be working on the DSM already. Instead, I am working on getting stuff out of the way so that I can get to working on the DSM.

Martin0660

Finally found some motivation ....

new cam installed, hot side refreshed (gaskets and seals), engine stiff done and diaper fitted...

new fuel system, Walbro 450 pump, Pro M hanger, all AN line to and from rail, wiring upgraded to 10 gauge from the alternator to pump.

all fresh fluids and mostly ready to fire.

transmissions are out, going to break them down tomorrow night to go through them both. Also going to have inputs ground to 2.3 diameter so I can go back to a pilot bearing instead of the bushings I've been running.

upper intake finally mostly done, needs bosses for my throttle cable and a plate I can take for connections, but it's built.

looking to be running next weekend. Should be doable

I could use some help from one of you dsm gurus. The evo is having some lean cold start issues. The car is speed density converted, 9417 rom tuned by a very reputable tuner. He swears it's not tune related. With that said, I have been messing around with the rom a bit. I have been looking at post crank enrichment tables. The car starts and idles perfect when warm.

This seems like a common issue with the 9417 rom, however, it's a small annoyance that I'd like to sort out.
