Who has actual experience with buying a car out of state that has a bank lien on it? Not looking for opinions, just facts please.

Questions.

1. How do you get a plate to drive the car home? (my guess is you have to pay for a T Plate for that state and then pay for another plate in your home state)

2. If you want to buy the car the same day as looking at it (6 hour drive to where I'm going, don't want to do it twice if possible) If the bank "owns" the title, can it be transferred to me on the spot after paying off its loan? Do the banks have the actual title at the bank? Can they be signed over to the new owner? My main concern is that I drive 6+ hours to buy a car and I can't get a title because of the lien. I'm not paying off someone else's car and not getting a title.

3. What paperwork do you need for transferring the title to PA? (Bill of sale, title, insurance, etc..)

4. What am i forgetting? What are any other "gotchas" ?

Coming from my experience of buying a car in Texas:

a. I left the plate on the car from the original owner for the drive home. I had the bill of sale with me in case I got stopped.

2. If you want to buy the car the same day as looking at it (6 hour drive to where I'm going, don't want to do it twice if possible) If the bank "owns" the title, can it be transferred to me on the spot after paying off its loan? a. Once the loan is paid off from the previous owner, the bank should have it on file because the previous owner will need to sign it over to you, then you take it to your CU/bank.

3. What paperwork do you need for transferring the title to PA? (Bill of sale, title, insurance, etc..)
a. yes, yes, yes

4. What am i forgetting? What are any other "gotchas" ?
a. I think that about covers it, aside from making sure it's got a clean title (different states have different brandings I believe).

Thanks.
I wanted to do a cash payment in full at the time of sale. Thus the reason I want to be careful.
No title, no sale.

Some people have told me you can get the BoS notarized and have copies of the paperwork without getting a title, but I'm not comfortable not having a title to a car I just paid for.

For stuff like this it is worth it to join AAA. If the local office doesn’t know all the answers from the seller’s state, they can call a branch local to the seller. Makes the whole thing a lot less stressful. No surprises = worth the membership.

So, I was all set to go look at this car and I pulled a carfax on it.

Moderate to Severe left front damage, debilitating (meaning it was towed)
No air bag deployment, no frame damage reported.

What would you do on a car that's 6+hours away?

I passed, because no matter what even if the car is premo and had been repaired correctly, it will ALWAYS have a report showing it was in a major accident.

Thoughts?

I would pass too unless I just had to have that exact car. Could have been major suspension damage causing it to be towed if there was no frame. Either way a dirty car fax and a major repair

I'm going tomorrow morning to buy a car in WV hopefully. I have to go to the state police barracks and get a one time temp pass so I can drive it back to PA and register it. I think it costs 10 bucks.

The banks (at least the big ones) don't usually even have a copy of the title anymore, it's all electronic. When they release the lien a message is sent to the DMV who creates a hard copy to send to you. You can register on the bill of sale.

If paying cash for a car, I would go with the seller to the bank that the car loan is through and do everything there. Banks deal with this situation a lot.

Just replacing the Fiesta I totaled. It's really clean but bare bones which is fine with me. Didn't think 6900 bucks was a bad deal with 61k on it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180509/822cc8d696032f0ef02e8a52d4aa0664.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180509/6778430666330cc8ea73c37d040dff51.jpg
