View Full Version : Turbo Oil Scavenge Pump

Anyone have any experience with using one ?
The drain line on my turbo isn't ideal and I have been having an issue with my turbo leaking oil and pushing it into the exhaust.
Thinking it is because the drain line isn't completely down hill.
I am considering trying some sort of pump.

I have two scavenge pumps on my twin turbo C5, rear mounted turbo's. It will solve your problem. Turbowerx pumps are solid and quiet, I would recommend one of those. Should be able to pick-up their base model for around $200.

How did you wire yours ? Just a 12v key on power source ?
Do you have any sort of sump with a breather with it?
I've read some stuff about that on some forums.

Yup, my 12v power source is my ignition wire, anytime the key is on the pumps are running. I also have two 30 amp relays with inline fuses wired in, and pressure switches with alarms at the pumps. A lil overkill but its peace of mind.

When doing research, most people just used a 12v keyed power source with an inline fuse and they were fine. Installed a dummy light in the interior so they knew the pump was getting power.

No sump or breather here. I have the return lines tapped into each valve cover instead of the oil pan, works really well.

I have the cheaper turbowerx, it kicks on with the primary fuel pump, it works really well. My return goes into where the low oil level light sensor was on my motor. No sump or breather.

What happens if the pump fails ?
Will it drain through the pump still ?

mine won't, it has to go uphill

Mine is still mostly down hill, just doesn't drain super well. Think it may partially be due to heavier weight oil with the new motor. (15w40)
I just didn't know if it would physically still move through the pump or not.

Pumps have impellers that will still allow fluid to pass through. They are not like a valve.

Yup will still pass thru if the pump stops running. The oil will eventually seep back into the exhaust system since it has nothing to push it. Its a rare occurrence for a quality pump to fail.

I'd likely mount the pump somewhere down hill. The drain on my car is mostly down hill but it has to run from driver side frame rail to the passenger side front of the oil pan.
