Last night coming from my gfs house in derry i was on 982 trying to get home fast and taking those turns and shifting and just being on edge was AWESOME:jump: .. This made me think about changing my way of going fast. I am alot more involved doing that than going straight 1320'. So i am looking to get into the road racing scene and was just wondering what car would be good for the handling and power and torque that is a good starting point. I was thinking a 96-98 4v cobra.. Any thoughts?

We get more E36 BMW's than anything for Road cars. M3's really respond when you add a cage and some bolt on's.

I was sorta into road racing a few years back, and bought a 98 4v cobra. I put 4.10's in it, and that thing owned Nelson Ledges. For me, that was the best stang I ever had up there. BTW I had a 93 GT, 95 cobra, and that 98 on that track.
96-98 cobra gets my vote.

I have been running my Cobra on the track the last couple years. I bought a 1996 BMW M3 in January for track use. The E36 BMW's make great track cars. They are light weight and handle well. I don't have the power I am used to, but I get around the track just as fast. If you are going to get a track car, invest in tires, brakes and suspension. You don't need power to go fast on a road course unless it has a few long straights. I still tell people I am a mustang guy, I just happen to be driving a BMW. If you have a lot of money, get a 911.

I am selling the stang i have now to grab one up. The reason i want a 96-98 cobra is because the way my car sits now the cobra still has alot more power and i can concentrate on the suspension and brakes and the tires and have the right set up and not have to worry about not having any power.

Less weight = more power + less brake pads + less tires + less gas. If you have not driven on the track for a while, you won't need power till you get some experience.

yea i am going to work my way up. I have only been at a track once and i only drove one lap at the beach in a bmw. last summer and forgot how fun it was until the other night. I just found a 325i a 1999 that is looking for a trade in mustang so i just emailed him.. how would this do?

A 325 would work great. The 4 doors don't weigh more than the coupes and handle just as well. Some people think they have a stiffer chasis. so many people race them that there are a lot of parts and aftermarket support. a good friend of mine races a 1990 325IS(E30 body). He does well with his car. They are hard to beat on the track for the money. Miata's are very good track car's also. I have a friend that switched from a C5 corvette last year to a Spec Miata this year. They handle really well and still have rear wheel drive.

Those damn spec Maita's. We have built cages for 3 of those this year, and we have another coming monday. They pretty much define handling when you put a stiff cage in one. The only downside is they are so small, i can barely drive them around the parking lot because my knees hit the dash.

I know 2 guys racing them that are around 6' 5" and 255#'s without much fat. They love the cars. I think one of the draws to spec Miata is the close racing. They are also allowed to bump draft in the straights.

6'5" ??? Low12Lightning is 6'3" 205 and has to squeeze his nuts together to sit down in a race seat that will fit those cars.

My 98 GT does really well in the autocross circuit. I was racing F stock and was pretty competative with the motified classes. Now that I lowered it and threw on some caster/camber plates and plan to add some strut bars, I can't wait to get back out on the track again. Anybody else here race autocross? Oh and btw I heard the Independant rear suspension cobras do really well on the autocross track. Friend of mine swapped his rear axle out of his gt for an independant rear suspension and raced it and it cornered way better.

Come out to MidOhio July 14/15 and I will introduce you to them. I haven't asked them how "things" fit in the seat but one of them has two children.

If you really want a hassle free track car, go with the BMW. But you can make a mustang a very good track car. But you have to be willing to do quite a bit of suspension work to make it safe to drive at 10/10ths. I had a 93 325is with a set of coilover's and brake pads, and on the same tire it wasn't much slower than my full suspension mustang that had probably 100 more horsepower. Almost even times autocrossing, but the mustang would destroy it on a road course, mostly just because of the power difference.

I think that for the money there are two cars that will shine on a road course: A C5 Z06 and a Miata.
I track a Mustang, but i guess you can track whatever :) .
My daily driver is a supercharged Miata and i'd love to take it to the track. i told my wife that i am not going to track it....but...well, i have lied before :D

I autocross with Jethro.
Last year, I ran this:

But I tore the frame all up from running Kumho Ecsta 710s. It's parked now while I build another Fairmont, and I'm borrowing this:

You can see more of the Camaro at www.zerotimeracing.com (http://www.zerotimeracing.com). That's the website for my friend's fledgling race team.
