OMG what a pain in the ass. I imagine a helper to hold back on the tensioner would have been better instaed of trying to install the belt with one hand and hold the tensioner with the other. Doing that on a hot engine would be pure torture

Cheater bar is the key Cam. Like mike said, its a 30 second job lol. Easiest way to do it by yourself is:

Put belt around all lower pullies, crank, alt, etc... Pull tensioner back enough to stick the belt behind that pulley. Next put it around the KB pulley and leave belt off the idler pulley thats to the right and below the aux idler. Pull the tensioner with the cheater bar and shove it under the idler, waaaala.

It was starting to fray and come apart. I'm ready for some crusing. Let me know.

Well, looks like I'll get a chance to try my luck at it again because the new one split in half tonight. Practice makes perfect:grumpy: . Glad I bought an extra

Not sure. It looks like the original one had been on for some time and I didn't alter anything. Bad belt maybe? dunno. I drove it easy for a few miles afterchanging it and ll was good. Met up with a friend of mine and got on it a few times. Went to pass a car and I heard something let loose and the sound of a belt slapping the hood. Pulled off and half of the belt was gone. Drove it easy home and just got done putting on the second new belt.( it does get easier the second time) Checked the pullies and they spin free and none are split. Started it up and let it idle awhile while watching it. Don't see anything wrong. Was going to prp tomorrow, but I'm a little worried now. I at least need more belts:owned:

Check the pulley alignment Cam. It's gotta be off to destroy a belt in short order like that.

What kind of belt did you put on it? Are you sure it was the right size and not too tight?

Goodyear gatorback. Same one that came off of it (780 if memory serves.) I'm thinking it might be to tight though. It's beyond the range markings on the tensioner. Very tight to get on.

Unless it's all the way past the range and is up against the stop on the tensioner you should be fine. Actually if it's that far you wouldn't be able to get the belt on..

Hummm...

Could've just been a bad belt....why not do a couple spirited runs, pull over...and check the new belt to see if it's started to walk off any pulleys.

good luck

I believe the stop tab is gone from the tensioner. I had it almost touching the crank pulley getting the belt on. I put on the new belt last night and started it up . Didn't see any problems. I'm going to try and go to PRP so Ill check it a few times during the evening.

We always break that tab off in order to get a shorter belt on. I have done that to 6 or more Cobra's that I have worked on.

No big deal with that, and it's not why you're having a problem.

That is why I said the tab was gone. I thought that's what you were referring to

Well second belt took the abuse of driving to and from Prp and two runs down the track without any probalems, so I'm guessing bad belt on the first one.

 2 Runs at PRP! That sounds about right. How was it with all that extra power?

Lots of power, but need driver mod! Was having a hard time getting car into third, and just getting used to the shift points and what not. Was really used to how the Mach ran after racing it 3+ years. 1st run absolutely wouldn't go into 3rd. Ended up smashing it into 5th:o and running it through the traps that way. 12.4 @107:biglaugh: . 2nd time shifted very slow and careful and ran a lackluster 11.8 @ 119. Need some seat time and some better air and I'll be in good shape.

Check the clutch adjustment. That might be keeping it from going into 3rd. I had that problem once when the clutch wasn't adjusted right..
