View Full Version : trying to choose an exhaust

I got a new fox. I sold my 90 LX and picked a very clean 87 GT. The exhaust on it now sounds like shit. I have it narrowed down to 3 brands-Flowmaster, Pypes, and MAC. I'm a big flowmaster fan but I kid of want to try something else. If and can give me some input or sound clips it would help alot.

Flowmaster and the fox style 5.0's are just to great of a combo to think of it any other way. I was considering the pypes all stainless system for mine but I could not find any clips to justify my buying it.
Mac doesnt sound to bad...but I would go with Flowmaster 9 times out of 10. The one other time I would maybe try the Pypes system for the heck of it.
Either way let us know what you pick!

I used this site before I bought all of my exhaust. Like I said I couldn't justify spending the money on something if I didnt know what sound I was getting.
Just get the flows and be happy! You know you want to!

Yup, I have 3" dumps on my coupe w/ a ProChamber. Very deep and mean. :goodidea:
Doesnt smell as bad as you would think. My Hatch cars have had more fumes than the dumps on a coupe.

Not a big fan of magnaflows at all or dynamax for that matter. Depending on what series of flowmaster you get, they are considerably louder than magnaflow. They also have more of a musclecar sound. Magnaflow is a packed muffler apposed to the chamber of the flowmaster or MAC. I really need to find a sound clip of MAC. I want to try them.

MAC pro chamber and dumps. Stock everything except the wheels. Very slight exhaust leak where it bolts to the factory manifold.

Yup. Magnaflows are all a straight through muffler. So normal driving they are a bit quiet (ex Magnapack) but at WOT they will be loud when cured. My 95 has magnaflow and at WOT it is just as loud if not louder than the drop (flowmaster 40s). Over the years I have had the following exhaust set ups.
Magnaflow Big ones and magnapacks
Flowmasters
Hooker
Mac Cat back
Mac Dumps
Bassani
Dyno Max
My favorite is the packed straight though mufflers on a pushrod 5.0. You can make it quiet but scream up high. Some of my old cars from the 60s I run flowmasters and love them. It is all in your preference.
I wish I had magnapacks on my GT because it is stock and could use some more sound. I have the magnapacks on my 64 (big block) and it is LOUD. The car had flowmasters but sounded more like a race car than a show car.

One more thing you need to think about..... Sound inside the car. My magnaflow and other straight through mufflers are loud outside of the car but quiet inside. Original Flowmasters seem to be very loud inside on 5.0 cars.

I have a Pypes axle back setup on the old ladies 06 GT and it happens to be a chambered turbo muffler. As Colin stated above...a chambered muffler will typically have some sort of interior resonance (dependent upon the design). The Flowmaster Delta series do not have any interior resonance due to the design of the baffled chambers....they aren't as loud as regular old two chamber flows either. Colin had Hooker Maximum Flow mufflers a long time ago on the notch that sounded unreal (straight through design).
Chambered mufflers are typically deeper sounding due to the chambers reverb effects...but you will usually get a little interior resonance or drone at a certain rpm.
100% straight through mufflers (magnaflow etc..) are typically quieter at idle due to lack of chamber, but get loud when you hit the gas. Most straight through mufflers sound MUCH better when the muffler's ceramic, fiberglass, or stainless packing heats up.
Bottom line...it's all about what sound you want and if you're willing to put up with a little interior resonance. I love the sound of Flowmasters on a 5.0 but I prefer the sound of magnaflows on a 4.6.
Listen to a ton of sound clips and go from there....
Oh yeah...Hooker Aero Chambers sound good as well!

you can't go wrong with tryed and true flowmasters, and if you want it stupid loud, use the one chamber flows..or dynamax bullets, just ask Billy Best about how loud they are..

X2 X3 X4 ...well you all get the point
Headers, pro chamber, and Hooker Maximum Flow mufflers...on a 5.0
The 64 (390) with magnaflow magnapacks sounds sick! And then of course there's the 66 (428) with aero chambers :jaw-dropping:

I ended up buying flowmaster american thunder. I told you all i would. Sounds good but not as loud and deep as the LX. Anything would be better than the cherry bombs that were on it.
