I was picking up my fiancee at grove city today and when I went to pull into the parking spot I reved her up and this sound like i sucked a tin can into my motor started coming from the car. I can't find anything visually wrong with the car. At idle there is a ticking coming from the DS/middle of the motor, the pop can rattle goes away by 2000 rpm and she sounds strong by 2100. I can feel air coming from the DS middle of the block to the middle of the plenum closest to the firewall...not sure from which part exactly but I know it's there somewhere.

I was running between 2000-2200 rpm in 5th on the drive up, stopped at a few lights and she was fine, pulled into the lot, fine, found a spot, idle was fine, gave her gas and out come the pop cans.

Car history: STOCK. Oil is fine, plugs are new, gas is 1/2 tank of 87 octane, same as I always run.

Can I drive this damn thing home or do i need to call AAA and get her home that way?

edit: blew the plug out of the PS head

what is DS?

edit: driver's side? OK, sounds like a plug might've stripped the hole to me?

Dont drive it. Only gonna cause more damage. It does sound like a popped plug. I had one today doing the same thing, a 4.6 Expedition. Gonna have to pull the head and most likely replace it. It burned the seat and a new plug doesnt seal. If all you did was pop the plug, it can be repaired if it's not too bad, hence you should NOT drive it.

I called a buddy with some tools. I blew the plug out of the head. I went to the nearest advanced autoparts, I got a new coil/plug (the plug was cracked as was the coil pack), some tools since he forgot the plug socket, took it apart, put it back together but reused the old coil pack....car missed like a bitch but I got her home

just curious... you said plugs were new in the first post. wonder why it happened after you changed them? how many miles on the originals?

I've got 67,xxx on her now and the plugs have been changed 2-3 times...not really sure at this point...I can't have more then 1500 miles on these plugs. I know I haven't changed the oil since i put them in so figure, less then 5000 for a high guess on the miles on this set of plugs.

so, do you think you just cracked the plug or is the hole stripped? sucks either way... hope you get it fixed up soon. :awsome:

I got it to hold the new plug....I think. It made it home at least. I'm calling Mike tomorrow to talk about my choices here. I'm going to swap coil packs tomorrow or saturday and see what's up.....if she runs well with the new pack then I'm not going to worry....I couldn't give her more the 1/4...some times less throttle on the way home. If I hurt the motor.....then well I'm ****ed because I can't afford to fix it and I can't afford a new car

could have stripped the hole when these last set of plugs were installed without knowing??? then just the pressure of the cylinder blew it out.

Anything is possible. Two of my plugs had rust on them...I know they were PS plugs but I don't remember which two, I'll ask dennis when i talk to him next and see if he does.

IT happens, Glad to hear you got home ok.

It's "general belief" that the plug loses it's torque and starts to jump around in the hole, beating on the threads until the threads finally give way. If that is for sure, who knows. All I know is that they all do it. From the 4.6, to the 5.4, to the 6.8. I've fixed at least one of all three, and I'll be doing another 4.6 tomorrow.

PM me if you have any questions, Always happy to help bud.

the hell happened to your phone broseph? The car is in the garage now, coming up 228 was...interesting in a life flashing before my eyes kinda way. I talked to Mike just now and he said to check the threads and the Comp Ratio. I'm going to take the car down to my mechanic and see whats up after xmas.

I have the Quicksert kit that can be used to fix/replace the stripped threads. Let me know if you need it.

Sounds like you lucked out better than I did. When mine went it sounded like a gun went off and I didnt have any threads left. My coil was ok but the little spark plug wire was all messed up. My car has been sleeping for a while now but it was running good before I put it in storage. I hope to see everyone in the spring. :awsome:
