I had a 91 notch 4cyl duel plug motor and got 25mpg, swaped it to a 86 4cyl turbo and get 30 mpg when drivin normal.

Theres your problem right there :D Maybe its my problem, I got to keep the right pedal on the floor :D Never had a NA 2.3, but got 25-28 with my pig heavy TC, and pretty much 25 with my Capri (both turbo). Its kinda like a V6 in a truck versus a V8. In a lot of cases the V8 gets the same / better milage because it isnt WOT to keep up at highway speeds.

I had both worlds with my ranger, It was a 88Hp wonder it got around 25 MPG on the road with the converter locked up headed west! I did the 2.3 turbo swap with the IHI & A4LD it would get 28/29 on the Carlisle trip, Locked up 1800 RPM 8/10 Lb boost..

The mileage difference between the v8 and 4 banger in the same car are very small...the aerodynamics of the car plays more of a role (like 95%+) than the engine size. The other factors being tire width and a slightly less efficient v8...assuming the same gearing of course.

My buddy with a manual v8 lx got 26mpg with 3.55's highway @ 70mph.

My old 2000 GT mustang got 30mpg once and avg'd 27-28 on PA turnpike. The v6 counterparts typically saw 1-2 mpg better...due to narrower tires and a very slightly more efficient engine.

I had one (91LX) and got in the mid-low 20's with it, it too was a dual plug setup. It was slow and didn't get very good mileage, I wouldn't look to one as a DD to save on fuel as there are better alternatives out there.

you are better off findin a v8 fox close to stock and drivin it daily had a 91 4cyl auto vert and it was terrible on gas for a 4cyl the best was usually 22mpg that was highway at that.

i got a different car. The one I found though was a 92 hatch with black interior for 1200.00. Instead I got a 94 Buick Regal. Ive heard they do pretty good in the snow.

Another factor is that 88 H.P. 2.3 is struggling to motivate the 3,000+ lbs. vehicle, where the 5.0L ain't breaking a sweat.

Wonder what the difference between the 88hp 2.3 and the 105hp 2.3 is in gas mileage? My post was referring to the 105hp version. Like I said, it's always done awesome.
