i just picked up a new to me 5.0. pretty clean car, not mint original but pretty decent and better than the POS's i usually buy to drive.
planned on storing it until spring. problem is i actually really need a car other than my truck to use really bad for work purposes etc.
i was thinking of throwing a plate on it and driving it until there is bad snow on the ground etc
anyone else out there use thier cars year round weather permitting? i am kind of worried what kind of toll would be taken with driving/lettting it sit out all winter.

few people are guessing couple pistons are hurt...not really sure until its torn apart. I'll be getting a new shortblock from MMR sometime after xmas, got a few priorities first.

I got a buck that says something in your valve train is jacked.

Well I'd love for that to be the case but I've personally seen 2 other motors with this EXACT same noise...and both turned out to be the teflon coating on the pistons burned up.
Either way...I want a new shortblock anyhow, I got that little red switch on the console thats begging to be hit.

I have driven my 428 Galaxie one winter, 88 5.0 Vert, my notch one, 00 GT another, an 88 LX 5.0 for many winters. I may be driving a 91 GT Vert this winter. I have never had many issues. In my LX I had a bare 289 Block for weight. Snow tires help alot!

I drive my cobra year round as long as the roads are dry. I'm still making payments on it for another year and have to maintain insurance year round so I figure I might as well take it out as long as the weather is nice. An extra bonus is the fact that the cold weather bumps the HP up a good bit :3gears: . I have a ranger to play in the snow with, so thankfully I don't have to drive a mustang around in the snow anymore. I did that for about 4 winters in my old 85 GT and it wasn't much fun :nono:

Was it just a continuation of the tap, tap, tap at the girlfriend's house??? :hyper:

you can drive it in the winter without a problem.... i drive my one Trans Am in the winter, and have never had any problems.... yea, you have to be careful, but its really not as bad as most ppl make it out to be. just be prepared that your paint-job will take a beating!

It depends on what your goals are with the 'Stang. If you want to just use it as a driver and don't care about some salt/cinder chips or the rust caused by the road salt, then go for it. Personally, I would buy a cheap winter beater front drive car instead of buying snow tires for the 'Stang and risking an accident. If you plan to do future suspension work, the extra rust from the salt will make the bolts more difficult to remove. Ever try to remove a gas tank from a rusty 5.0? Not fun!

Yea Man I drive my 95 all year around and we have snow and I don't drive it on those days. After every drive I wash it with a preshure washer top and bottom and get off all the salt.:stang:

I drove my first car,an 82' 4cly , 5 spd, all year long for years. Put some snow tires on, maybe studded. Just watch when you park that you can still pull out. Thats the only time i had to get get pushed. I even drove it the blizzard of 94'.
I drive mine year round and dont think twice about ice/snow on roads. I use Blizzaks in the winter.

I never drive my stang in the snow. The reasons why are:
a) PA salts the roads like a fat man's steak. That is why they call this the "Rust Belt". Cars do rust quickly in PA. Think about that when you are replacing rusted out quarterpanels in a few years.
b) Winter-Beaters are so easy to find and are cheap.
c) Rear wheel drive vehicles are bad in snow. I grew up driving rear wheel drives in snow. My winter-beaters when I moved back from Florida were rear wheel drive until I drove my first All Wheel Drive. With the exception of power-slides, rear wheel drive vehicles are basically sleds with wheels. Four wheel /All Wheel Drive vehicles are the way to go. And yes, you can powerslide an All Wheel Drive.

i have a 05 f150 fx4 for when the roads get bad.
problem is my truck is an absolute pig gas wise, so even the stick 5.0 will be better. i use my vehicles for work and get paid mileage so i usually get a cheap 5.0 run it, and then after a while the car usually pays for itself.
i probably will stick plates on the car and drive it on decent days weather permitting. i have been there and done that using stangs in bad snow and would never use one strictly as my every day driver car.
i grow tired of my cars very easily so i will probably sell it by summer anyways unless i end up really liking it.

Yea if your going to drive something that can rust, car washes need to be a regular thing!

It's not so easy as everyone things to spray the salt off. The salt will settle in nooks and cranies and sit there all winter. I do not care how many times the car is washed, you can not get the salt out of everywhere. No matter the make or type of vehicle this is going to happen. When the temperature goes above freezing, the salt will start to react with the metal. If you want to keep it a long time I would recommend winter storage. If not, drive it like you stole it lol.:highfive:
Rear wheel drive cars are not bad in snow if you know how to drive in snow. I have watched and laughed at many a 4x4 on way to work that are spinning up a hill and I sit behind without ever breaking a tire loose. Every car I have owned has been rear wheel drive. Hell I drove a '79 firebird to work back in '93(?) after that huge blizzard we had. Never got stuck and it had 295/50-15 BFG's on the rear.
Driving in snow is great if you have a clue.

You are 100% correct. Not hard to drive in the snow. Sure, I will not go out if there is 6" of unplowed snow. How did people do it back in the day? Rear wheel. Here is the thing. You need to worry about morons in minivans more than me driving a 5.0 drop! :goodidea:

Very nice! The funny thing is my company offered me a position in Phoenix. Because I am a mammas boy, I am staying in Pittsburgh. Heck, I just bought a house 500 yards from my parents! What can I say, my mom can cook and my dad has a lot of tools!
