Scratched Rims due to tire mounting

I just had 4 new tires mounted on our '07 MDX at Baierl Acura. When my wife brought it home, I noticed all 4 rims have a deep scratch in the outer face of the rim about 1/2 inch from the outer edge. I am really pissed off about this as the scratch is around the entire rim. Am I overreacting or could this have been avoided somehow by using a rag or something to protect the rim. If anyone has experience on this issue, please chime in so I know what to say to the service manager tomorrow. Thanks.

you took it to the dealer. do not hesitate or procrastinate, i'd be on the phone at 8:00 am and on the way there. If they F*d them up then they need to replace them or have them fixed if possible. It isnt like you went to BOB's garage. PICS?

I will get some pix later tonight of the scratches. I'm sure they will tell me there is no way to avoid scratching rims when mounting them. I need some ammunition to tell them that isn't true. Afterall, the factory didn't scratch them when they mounted the OEM tires. I have had several sets of tires mounted on my Mustangs and the rims never got scratched. There must be a trick or something.

they make plastic inserts that go over the end of the tool so it wont scratch the wheel, ask them if they used them. also definatly would do something tomorrow cause the longer you wait the more likely they will try to say it wasent them.

tell them your wife had it up there and she didnt notice it. but you did once she got home. if they damaged the wheel its there problem to fix.

I will be taking the MDX to Baierl this morning to have them look at it and to determine what will be done. I will let everyone know the outcome.

That sucks man! Defiantly take them back and make them replace them! Everyone around here has the same problem, nobody takes pride in there work! We charge like 2 bucks more to mount and balance tires but yet everyone that knows brings there stuff to us because we take the time to do it right! even the chevy and ford dealers bring there nice stuff to us because our machine is built to do nice rims.

They make nylon covers for the tire machines that are supposed to be used when mounting tires on any wheel other than a steel wheel. fknfast on here had this happen to four brand new centerline coronas on his stang when he had it. The tire shop had to replace all four wheels because they were to the point to where the outside of the rims where like knive edges. They need to replace them or have them fixed since it was there fault.

As promised, here is the outcome after looking over the damage with the service manager. Initially, they offered to have a local shop repair the wheels. I said there is no way that a local shop could match the OEM finish, especially the prep work required to get the wheel clean enough to apply the clear. I then said, they need to replace the wheels with 4 brand new wheels. The guy looked at me, paused, then said ok. We walked back inside, they ordered the wheels, and then apologized for the inconvenience. Thanks for all of the replies, they really helped.

I'm glad this worked out for you!

If you needed some evidence for tires not needing to scratch the rims to get mounted, all you would have to do is take them outside and walk down a row of cars and ask them how they managed to get the tires on those wheels without scratching them.

I know that Punisher & myself have had some problems @ Calibro tire with scratches. I had no proof, so I was SOL. Glad to see this work out in your favor. Seems like the new great trend in the auto industry is to con customers out of customer service. There are a few that still do it right though. Those guys are great, but they're diamonds in the rough for sure.

The tire shop in Portage is one such place, kinda far away for the pittsburgh folks but Tim's not going to screw up your rims.
