Thread: wtf with rear brakes????

    wtf with rear brakes????

    im changing the rear brake pads on the wifes 01 today and i cant get the piston pushed back into the caliper. is the caliper bad or do i have to do something with the emeg. brake? ive never done these brakes before so i dont know what the deal is.any info would be great. thanks.

    i believe those twist back in, not like the older ones that you can use a c-clamp to compress it. i know the 94+ has that setup

    well you can do it with a pair of big plyers or vise grips.. but autozone rents out the tool that twist them back in.

    I bought the tool for them for like 10 bucks or so from advance. Its a piece of square metal with some lugs on it to lock into the piston and then you use a 3/8 drive ratchet to turn it. Here it is

    well i bought the tool from autosupermaket and it didnt work for shit so i used needle nose vise grips. why must they always be redesigning the basics???????????

    They're a huge pain. The LSCs rears are the same. I too tried it both ways, seems like the pliers work better.

    I am not a big fan of Harbor Freight for tool I use weekly, but how often do you change your brake pads...
    BTW, tear the dust boot or scrape the piston wall with a pair of pliers and you will be out more money than the tool cost.

    I made a similar tool to this for purestock's rear brakes on his Taurus. I just used his old brake pad and 2 nuts with all thread. A little bit of fancy welding and presto!!! Free tool. This is the one that is needed though as it applies pressure to both sides while compressing and turning.
