After working all day long in my garage the last two days getting a final few things done, my car finally took its first breath tonight!!!

just got it started about 10 min ago, it runs but not for too long, i think its a combination of really $hitty old gas from a year and a half ago and needing to still set the timing. im going to get the timing set tommorow because its cold as hell outside, really dark, and my car is SO loud (no catback yet + offroad H) and i dont wanna piss off all my old neighbors.

one problem though...when i try to start the car, there is nothing from the starter, not even a click.....So, i "jumped" the starter by using a jumper cable from the positive battery post to the little post on the top of the starter relay i did this and the starter began to crank...then i put the key in the on position and tried this again and eventually got the car to fire.

my question is: why wont my car start just using the key? i think its my neutral saftey switch....there are two prongs comming out of the drivers side of my transmission and a plug from my cars wiring harness that doesnt reach it...are those two prongs the neutral saftey switch??? i thought that was just for my reverse lights so i thought i would be good leaving it go. if it is, is there a piece between the prongs on the tranny and the plug comming through the floor since the plug doesnt reach it???

theres a couple of jumpers under the dash near the tranny tunnel, that you have to change to switch from auto to standard i think, id look there
