    Question roll bar ?

I've been thinking about buying the street-sport roll bar. was wondering some of your thoughts on the bolt in style roll bars vs the weld in, It's main function is going to be a bracing point for my racing harness('s)

Personally, I like the bolt in method better than weld in. The NHRA rules requires 6 x 6 plates with 4 x 3/8" bolts, along with backing plates. I would however stay away from the "street" type bars, and go with one of the Maximum Motorsports NHRA legal ones. Mine has swing out door bars, so I just pull them out to drive it normal, the only obtrusion is a small reciever near the kick panel. I had $430.00 in mine delivered to a bussiness adress via truck freight. We installed it in about a days total time spread out over several days. I fitted it, removed it to make the two required welds, painted it, then re-installed, that's why it was spread over a few days. I had my door bars powder coated for durability, kinda wish I would have had it all done the way now.

Pictures of mine in this album if you are interested.

I have an autopower race version in both my mustang and my M3, and they both fit pretty well. The autopower bolts to the wheelwell in the mustang. I put a fox version into my 97 and it fit, but you'd either have to remove the panels or cut the hell out of them to make it fit. But if you are drag racing (mine is there for hillclimbing and SCCA time trials) I would go right for the maximum motorsport. Why do it twice? BTW, if you consider the autopower six or eight point, there's no way in hell it would ever pass an IHRA or NHRA tech inspection. Floor plates are tiny.

Watch powder coating roll cages...If you plan to get them certified (8:50 or 7:50) a chassis inspector will NOT pass it. They can only be painted all other coatings are illegal per NHRA rules. Due to the chassis inspector having to check the wall thickness of the bars at several different points on the cage. Just a thought.

You can also check out www.dominickracing.com too! Dave put roll bar in 69 Mach I and you can't even see it. Just a thought for you to ponder!

Good point Hank. Mine is a simple 6 point with swing out door bars. I never plan to go that fast with this junk(and of course my bar wouldnt be legal), and will never need to pass cert. Still a great point for anyone looking to go that fast.

There are several of Domick's bars in cars at the track all the time. He does really nice work, decent prices, and from what I saw, pretty fast. I am not personally a fan of how he does his swing out door bars, but some of that is simply preference. His design is definately strong.

I'm happy with the MM bar for what my car is, and I still suggest that bar for mild(er) street car. We can start the whole debate about roll bars in ANY street car another time ;)

There are pictures on Dave's website. He's a good guy! Also, the Mach I will be at PRP tomorrow. Mark races Mod class if you want to look at it, we pit on the right side of track by the score boards too!

my biggest concern with having the roll bar with the door bars is I'm a big guy (6'2 315lbs) and its tight without having any extra pipe running along side the door, plus I don't go to the trank all that often, so a I really need is something to hold my safety harness(s)

Like I said, I drive my car around without the door bars installed, the only obstruction to the driver / passenger seat is small recievers on the floor for the front of the door bars when the bars are out. It's a lot tighter with the bars in place. I also understand that MM makes low slung street door bars that can be substituted, but I've never seen them. You should some to the track some time and see mine, and look at some others.

In the end, get what makes you happy ;)

My brother did exactly what Bob did with his car.
The MM NHRA bar is a good set-up for a street type car that won't go faster than 10.50
Like Bob said, the door bars are nice in that they only need to be in for the track.
I have Chris Alston ChassisWorks clevis style door pins to make my driver bar swing or bolt-out. It is legal to 8.50 also and a bit easier to bolt in/out than the MM.
