    which way do i install rear main seal? pics inside...

    ok not 100% sure on which way to install rear main seal. it's the 1 piece fel-pro if that makes a difference.

    pic 1: this side is flat


    pic 2: this side is cut out.



    I think the flat side goes toward the flywheel, and the cutout side goes toward the inside, is that right?

    also, when installing this while putting my shortblock together, should i put this around the end of the crank before putting the rear main cap on, OR install the rear main cap Then install the seal?

    spring side goes in towards the block.. you can install after you put the cap on. just leave the rear two 1/2 inch oilpan bolts loose until it's in.

    I geuss I never messed with the V8 stuff, but our 4 cylinder seals come with a little clear plastic sleeve to keep the lip from folding over furing install. Did you remove that, or don;t the V8 ones come that way?

    As was said, the spring goes to the wet side ;)

    nope, dont think the v8 ones come with that...just pulled mine right out of the box and took pics. i didnt mess with anything

    make sure you lube up the crank a little before putting it on, this will help it to not tear of scratch up the seal..
