    Need Local Salvage Yard Info

    Hi folks,

I need to find a good local salvage yard. My 1990 TBird SC's ABS system has bit the dust, and I plan to remove the ABS system and install a conventional ( NON-ABS ) system. It's a long story that I won't put you through - let it suffice to say that this swap will cost a lot less than fixing the problematic factory ABS system.

Here's what I need to do the swap ( photos below ) :

From a 1992-1993 Ford Crown Victoria that does NOT HAVE ABS and does NOT have the police interceptor package, a brake master cylinder, complete with the screw-in proportioning valve and fluid reservoir. I believe the part # is Bendix 12376,

    and...

from a 1989-1992 Thunderbird, which is NOT a SuperCoupe and does NOT HAVE ABS, a brake vacuum booster unit. It MUST have the vacuum port on the DRIVER's side of the booster ( to the right as you're looking at it from the front bumper of the car ). Part # Cardone 54-74305 or Wagner 5474305.

The master cylinder and booster are available new, but the proportioning valve, which screws into the rear brake port of the master cylinder, is not, so that's the main reason I need to find a salvage yard.

A ton of SuperCoupe owners have done this swap and tossed their ABS units in the trash heap and love the performance and reliability. I will keep the stock parts ( don't worry Jason :D ) so the stock stuff can go back in someday if the "next" owner so desires.

So - any info on local yards would be a big help. If you could include phone numbers I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks guys.

    Ron

Thanks for the help Punisher. I'm out in Moon Twp near the airport, and don't know squat about getting around Washington. Can you give any more info? And the place in Ohio - is it just across the PA border on Rt 51 / 14? Is it called Dons or Feezles or ??? That might be a possibility - it's only 40 min or so from me. But I haven't been there since - geez - probably 1990?? Dang - that's a long time ago...

You can also search on http://www.car-part.com/

It allows you to put in the year, make, model and specific part & search/sort by distance & price.

X2 I use this all the time to locate cars / parts in yards ;)

What problem are you haveing with the ABS? I beleive that is a TEV's system, they arent that complicated to work through, and problems are usually realys or the pressure switch. Not as bad as a compl, ete swap IMO.

Hey Ron, I need a couple small parts for my wife's Maxima, so if you plan on going to a yard I could tag along.
I used the site Mark suggested, it seems helpful by I had trouble looking for the specific parts I needed.
If anyone sees an '01 20th anniversary Maxima in a yard, I'll gladly pay a finders fee :)

Bob Cossel's is in West Alexander and I have been there a couple times. There is also a U Pull It right next door and is owned by the same people. They usually have a good selection of stangs at the stang specific yard and a good selection of ford products in the U Pull It.

Thanks Army - I appreciate the help. I found some parts at Novak's thanks to the site Mr. Lowry posted - hopefully when I call them Monday morning I can get the things I need. Only problem is that they're open 8am-5pm Mon-Friday, and I am jammed at work this coming week. Maybe they can deliver...

Bob - You're correct - the SuperCoupe uses a TEVES Mark II ABS system. In my case, the problem is not the $15 relay. It may be a pressure switch, but that switch is integrated into the master cylinder / ABS pump unit, and the cost of just the switch exceeds $100. Factor in the effort to remove the master cylinder monstrosity ( SC owners actually refer to it as the "abortion on the firewall" ) to replace the switch ( the MCyl is HUGE ) and the chance that the pressure switch failing may have fried the ABS pump, and it makes sense to remove the entire system ( MCyl, ABS computer ), since the master cylinder/ABS pump assembly runs $600 for a reman unit, and $1700+ for a new one. These things are notorious for failing, and when it happens you're left with no power assist - it's like stopping a freight train by putting your foot out the door. I'd never be able to let my wife drive the car for fear of the ABS system taking a dump with her behind the wheel. I'm hoping to spend $60 - $100 for the parts I noted above, and end up with a brake system that is much more reliable and cheaper to maintain.

Here's a great link about the stock SC braking system for anyone who cares - it's good stuff....

    http://www.albeedigital.com/supercou...bs-system.html

I know that, before I bought the car from Jason, the same thing happened to him, and he purchased a used master cylinder / pump assembly for about $200 ( stock SuperCoupe pieces ). That one didn't last long at all - probably less than 3,000 miles. The SCCOA ( SuperCoupe Club of America ), has a bunch of guys who have gone this swap route and love the results, so I'm hoping to follow in their footsteps. The swap is pretty simple ( '93 Crown Vic MCyl, '90 TBird vacuum booster, minor pushrod tweaking / adjustment ). I really like this car, but I do not want to spend big bucks keeping it on the road.

I'll post an update on Monday - hopefully with good news on my parts search.

Even the dedicated stang parts area? Or is Bob Cossel Mustang Parts no longer there? I was hoping to make it by there next time I am home.

His mustang store is long gone. In fact, Cossell sold the whole shootin' match to a recycling company.

    x2!! Thanks for the info!

I have a lead on the parts I need at Novak's in New Brighton. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they still have the parts. The prices they had posted online were really low - my fingers are crossed...

J - I'll let you know if I head to Novaks - only problem is they're hours are 8-5 Mon-Fri. So that might make it difficult, as I'm pretty jammed up at work this week. I'm hoping there's a chance they can deliver out my way.

Today I ordered the stuff I needed from Novaks in New Brighton. $25 for a master cylinder complete with reservoir, cap, and proportioning valve, and $35 for a power brake booster. Throw $20 shipping and $4 tax on there and I'm out the door for $84.

J - since their hours are tight ( 8-5 Mon-Fri ), I had to have them ship the stuff. It's not a bad deal, considering it's 45 minutes each way - during working hours. I think you should give them a call - they seemed very sharp, and so far their customer service is great. I asked them to go out in the yard and check a few things on the parts and they got right back to me. I was actually shocked at how on-the-ball they were.

Keep your fingers crossed for me - hopefully the parts are ok when they get here.
