i know you have to be VERY good with photos to do it, I know you take a pic with the hood open and the hood closed.
Simple yet time consuming.
Take two pictures of the car without moving (i.e. use a tripod). First pic should be of the car with hood closed. Second should be with the hood open.
In photoshop (or other editing program) take the first photo and select the hood and place it on a seperate layer. Open the second picture with the hood open and select the engine bay area and make it a new layer. Move the engine bay layer back to the first photo. That will give it the look of the car without a hood. Now put the close hood layer on top and reduce the opacity to allow the engine to show through.

yup thats pretty much it. Take 2 pics with the camera on a tripod. 1 pic have the hood closed, one pic have the hood open.
here is the trick to the open hood shot... since we don't want to have that ugly hood prop in the picture, you need to either have someone hold the hood open for you, or put the camera on a delay to take the picture as you hold it open. Stand on whatever side doesn't put a shadow on the engine bay and open the hood as wide as you can (without damaging anything) to let the most light in
When you have your two pictures, open up photoshop and the two pictures. Use the closed hood picture as your starting point.
open up the open hood pic and copy & paste it overtop of the closed hood picture (it will form a new layer). Erase everything but the engine bay, I recommend using the lasso tool that lets you click to connect the straight lines to select just the engine bay, then pressing right click & choosing 'select inverse'
Now that everything on the open hood shot but the engine is selected, you can just press delete or use the eraser feature, whatever works best for you.
now, with everything still selected, use the lasso tool again if you aren't already on it. right click and choose 'select inverse' again. Now go to the layers menu on the right, and click the eyeball on the open hood shot to make it invisible, then select the base layer (closed hood shot). press copy, but don't press paste just yet. click on the eyeball next to the open hood layer so it becomes visible again and select the open hood layer if it doesn't do it automatically for you. NOW you can press paste, which should leave you with an image that looks exactly like what you started with.
With the top layer selected, you can now reduce the image % and fill % to get the effect that you want.
There might be an easier way to explain it, but thats how I do it and it takes maybe 2 minutes for me to do one... which is kinda funny because it took me a lot longer to type that than it would have for me to do it
Most important thing is that you get 2 shots from a tripod with the hood being held open and with the hood closed. Any questions just ask, I know my way around photoshop fairly well
oh, and you probably can't tell, but that image was taken without a tripod... the alternative is that you stand perfectly still and have a friend hold the hood open wide while you take your first picture, then close the hood and take the 2nd without moving.
