This was the standard health care. I do get a supplemental plan through work, but it only kicks in to pay for things that I would normally have to pay for out of pocket. For example, if they had to do the traditional operation to remove it and put a 15-20cm incision in my abdomen, I would have required an overnight stay. At that point, my supplemental would have kicked in and paid for the private room as opposed to the standard semi-private that's included with the standard health care. (EDIT - or for example pain drugs. Anything not administered or dispensed in hospital is not covered by the standard care, and since they knew I had prescription coverage for work, they wrote me a script I could take instead of dispensing through their pharmacy which let me go home sooner).
I had heard about private insurance in the UK and some of the things that happen (EDIT - i have friends in the UK and after moving to Canada we discussed the respective health care plans), but to my knowledge the supplemental insurance up here only picks up what you would have to pay out of pocket if you wanted to elect that option. I haven't heard of anyone here in Canada getting bumped up the queue because of insurance. I have heard of people supposedly getting bumped up queues out west if they were willing to pay out of pocket for everything but in my province that is illegal.
Here's something interesting I found out about wait times and the way the government compiles statistics in my province. I was speaking with my surgeon in my initial consult about wait times, and he explained to me that the government only cares about the date he submits the surgical request and the date you have the surgery. They don't care if after submitting the form that he decides to wait another, say, 10 days to run some additional tests or if I wasn't feeling good the day of the surgery and rescheduled 10 days later. If either thing had happened, the gov't would have considered the wait time for my surgery 20 days, not the original 10 that it would have taken if either hypothetical mitigating circumstance had happened.
So, even though wait times may seem long statistically speaking, all it takes is a couple of outliers who keep delaying their surgical procedure for one reason or another to really mess up the wait time statistic.
PS - cute puppy! :)

oh and T3's are sooooooooo muich better than the T2's you can get over the counter :)
Hope you get to feeling better soon. I also hope the test come out in your favor. It sounds like you've had great care.
Thanks. My GP said to call as soon as I'm feeling better to schedule follow up. My surgeon also wants me to come in a week from Thursday to make sure everything is healing okay.
I have to say I did have pretty good care. The nurses were all excellent and really looked out for me. It seemed like they were checking on me constantly. They gave me some pain medication and between that and waking up from the anesthesia I was feeling nauseated. They had some Gravol in my IV literally within minutes of complaining of the nausea. Before the surgery the anesthesiologist was funny too joking about how I was getting my breakfast through the IV. I could feel it going up my arm and i commented "oh, its a cold breakfast, eh?" and he laughed and said "yep, continental breakfast here". They asked 10 million questions too both in my presurgical consult on Friday as well as before surgery on Monday to make sure that I wouldn't have any issues with the anesthesia or the surgery itself. I was impressed with how thorough they were and how much they cared about a positive outcome.
Although the system does have its problems (what system doesn't?) I can accept the tradeoffs I have to make. One thing I do like about the health care up here is that it's GP based. Your General Practitioner (GP) is the hub of a wheel and he spokes out to specialists, surgeons, etc. Our province also has electronic charting now so when your surgeon/pathologist/cardiologist/etc writes a note, your GP can see it instantly. Having unified care through your GP means there is one doctor in tune with what's going on in your care and can help pick up things that other ways of administering care could miss. The downside is that our province has a slight shortage of GP's. It's not like the GP trainwreck Ontario is facing, but in rural areas its having an impact on how far you have to drive to your GP (mine is a 35 min drive). Fortunately my surgery was at the local hospital about 20 mins away and my surgeon's office is next door so that's not too bad. :)
This is what I mant to post, freaking photobucket acts strange here too ...
This is an image that should scare the hell out of everyone. This is one of 8 or 9 full city blocks being built around my hotel. In addition, huge projects on highways all around and the high speed rail is operating from TangGu to Beijing. I can now hop a train and be in Beijing in 45 minutes now versus 2 1/2 hours driving. The first discussion of that project was 2 years ago, it's now reality ... When is the last time anyone saw construction on these scales at home. Welcome to the global economy.

That's why I asked ... it was a funny conversation one night, Myself, a few from UK, an Aussie, a German, and a Scott (start of a bad joke I'm sure) .... Back when the health care debate was going on, they asked me to explain why there is a debate. Those guys simply could not concieve the idea of not having a basic system. The rest of the world views this very different.
More Gov't intervention in our lives spells more taxes and that is bad for the economy. America has a primary model that has worked great for over 200 years . Give a man liberty and a job he will take care of himself. WHile i respect other cultures and countries right to have a different way of doing things -- this is a country which has rewarded those that work hard and contribute to society. A country in which politicians vote themselves a living and everyone they can get to vote for them because they offer freebies to those that don't is headed for destruction. Look at Western Europe and others as an example --- What have they really created over the last 100 years that has bettered humanity ? Socialism?, Marxism?, 1 child rule, communism, DIctators ??? Our system of Gov't has proved enduring -- let's keep it! It is not about Democrats and Republicicans -- it is about controlling the amount of say the Gov't has in our choices and lives... and about the right of others to chose theirs.
whoa Bobby. lay off the brewskies buddy. global economy? it's called communism and slavery in that country. you are obviously a world traveler and right there in the thick of it. I will not act like I know more than you, but really? look at the bigger picture. are those people FREE?

Nah, if it werent for beer, I would of lost it a while ago ;)
Not wanting to debate the topic on a Mustang site (and while typing), but will say that you have to see some of the world first hand. My personal view of the world has changed a lot over the recent years. Good topic to discuss over some beers sometime![]()
Martin0660, Where do you work that you travel all over the world? If you dont mind me asking, just wondering.

Speaking of high speed rails, anyone remember when that company was trying to put one in here, but apparently nobody wanted it. Was going to go through greensburg, monroville, downtown pittsburgh, and the airport among other places. It would have taken something crazy like 8 minutes to get to pittsburgh from greensburg. Pretty sure a bunch of home owners didnt want it around their homes even though it was completely silent and extremely convenient. Id imagine it would have really helped the local economy out quite a bit as well. There has been no talks about it since... That was at least 10 years ago.

All you needed was a Kiwi, a Canadian, and a South African and you would have had the complete set! (ba-dum-dum!) :)
But seriously, you're right about the view other countries have about health care. When I told my friends in the UK what was happening a week ago, their first reaction was "Thank G-d you're in Canada" because they knew that regardless of my economic class or employment status I could get a level of care to deal with the issue.
That being said, I really wish those that are in the far left in the US would realize that "free health care" isn't really free. Name brand cigarettes here are now close to $14.00 a pack, gas just cracked $1.30 a litre ($4.91 CAD/gal or 5.06USD/gal at current exchange), an 8-pack of cheap domestic beer is 13 bucks, and there is a 15% Harmonized Sales Tax (7% federal, 8% provincial) on all items except unprepared food and animal feed. In return for paying for your health care this way as opposed to insurance/HMO's you get care without medical practitioners having to deal with a mountain of paperwork to make sure they get paid (which means they order tests based on your condition as opposed to your ability to pay for them) and there is less of a disparity in care between the "haves" and the "have-nots".
Yes, I grumble about some of the taxes when I go to the pump or the liquor store, but after the experience I just had I think I'm going to complain a little less.
BTW it was a MAGLEV system they were trying to put here... it was never officially canceled I guess, but it has gone by the way side. From what I remember it was going to cost >$5 billion to complete. BUT you could go from greensburg to the pittspburgh airport in 35 minutes with 5 stops along the way.

My metallurgy professor is the director for that project. He said he doesn't see it happening anytime soon but thinks it will in the future. He is out of austin texas and has been the site director for many things including the underground caves in the mid west for nuclear waste storage. He said the same thing happens everytime a big project is introduced. The people in the area don't want it because it will "ruin the landscape". But in the end it usually happens.

There has been news on that as recently as last summer.... apparently Obama's stimulus plan had some money in it for these high-speed rail projects......
I dont' see it happening anytime soon either - but you can be sure that as soon as it does, properly values in westmoreland county will skyrocket..... personally, if i could be to downtown from Greensburg in 25 mins, i'd live way out in the Westmoreland county countryside for sure....
