Went to a high power model rocket launch to get certified in high power (Cliffs: To launch a rocket with a gross weight > 1500g OR a total impulse greater than 160Ns you need to be certified by the governing body up here and can only fly with a waiver from Transport Canada. Its similar to the US except the US adds the restriction that the average thrust cant be more than 80N [1N = 0.22 lbs IIRC] or else its considered "high power". The FAA is loosely Transport Canada as these are the bodies responsible for redirecting air traffic so that we have an undisturbed cylinder of airspace to fly in while the waiver is in effect). Its a multistage certification process (there are 4 levels up here). My level 1 certification flight (allowing motors up to 320Ns total impulse) went without a hitch. My L2 flight (allowing motors up to 640Ns of total impulse), not so much. The specification data on the motor I used is here:
http://www.pro38.com/products/pro54/...id=518I165-17A
Before the flight, it was mentioned that the AP propellant blend in this motor is "as close to the space shuttle as you can get". I'm starting to wonder if that's a good thing or a bad thing....
Basically about 0.4-0.7 seconds after ignition there was a failure in the integrity of the metal engine case (ironically, near an O-ring) where the thrust ring screws into it. This rupture caused part of the airframe to shred resulting in the carnage you see here.
Although I joked with people "oh, that'll buff right out!" i'm going to write the rocket off as a loss. people talked about how it could be repaired but for me its too far gone. I'd rather keep it for spare parts.

looks quite f-ed. whats a rocket like that cost (in american, lol) if you dont mind me asking
The dollars are at parity today, so 1 CAD = 1 USD.
This kit was from LOC Precision in the US and was $99.00 for the basic kit (click on the pic in the link for specs on the kit itself):
http://shop.locprecision.com/product...&categoryId=15
I added about $20.00 or so in upgrades to it so it could handle the HPR level attempts.
The kit I have in progress right now is their "HyperLoc 835"

This one is purely a high power rocket as its too heavy to use without a Transport Canada/FAA flight waiver. I'm wrapping the airframe and fins in fiberglass and I'm airfoiling the fins for supersonic flight. Depending on how much weight the glass adds my flight simulator gives some optimistic results with this motor:
http://www.pro38.com/products/pro54/...did=3147L935-P
which in terms of total impulse is the biggest one I can stuff into it. 933N (over 200 pounds!) average thrust with an initial kick of over 1500N which means about 30g's of force at launch! Simulation says I should hit somewhere between Mach 1.3 and Mach 1.5 with a top altitude potential of 3000m (10,000ft)!! Because of the altitude potential I'm going to have to add electronics to control the descent. one black powder charge separates the airframe at one point so that it doesn't come down ballistic, then a second charge goes off based on an altimeter reading to deploy a parachute so that I can get it back without a walk from hell.
So yeah, a supercharger for the mustang is out thanks to this addiction :(
Oh, as an aside if it wasn't for Cessaroni having such an excellent warranty program, that motor case that CATO'd would have cost me $60.00 and the reload for it would have set me back $55.00. Being an awesome company they are going to replace both the case and the reload for me so I'm not out anything.
