Record breaking global warming today. Stay cool.

It is amusing to hear all the climate scientists insist that we now call "Global Warming" "Climate Change". And of course those of us who question the level of impact mankind has on the climate are labeled as idiots because "97%" of scientists agree the earth is warming. Aren't these the same scientists who told us we were on the verge of the next ice age in the 70s and that Florida would be underwater by now? Not sure that the skeptics are the idiots....

Definitely graphite. They've gotten very strict on not modifying the wheels, and all 4 wheels have to be on the ground. No more 1 wheel lifted. I'm an assistant leader, so I probably shouldn't let my son cheat too much.

Back in the day we used mercury to weight them. Dad learned on my cars what to do then refined it on my brothers car. He won both years he competed.

I need to get back into model cars. I used to have a ton of them, as my uncles were big into them in the 70s-80s.

I still have my pinewood derby car too! Funny story, I was at a cub scout race with a buddy of mine. He got mad when he got there because his car was uglier than everyone else's and left, but we said we'd race his car for him. Guess who won 1st place? Him and his ugly ass car. I took 2nd and still have the trophy.

Messed my ride up by trying to paint the center of the wheels and got paint in the axles. Tried to clean em up and use graphite, but it was too late. Lost big time at the regional race at, of all places, Parkway Center Mall.

Do they still do the boat races? Where you have to make a sailboat and blow it down an aluminum gutter? Those were fun until you almost passed out at the end.

Man, those were the feakin' days.

I still have all three of my pinewood derby cars. My first one my step-dad basically made himself won the first year. The next two I made didn't fair so well, haha. That's awesome the ugly car won. This one we made isn't exactly beautiful. My son's favorite color is green, and after this photo was taken he made some additions of his own..
The lego man is actually mine from the mid 80's. My son picked it out because it's a race car driver.

I think we'll be doing the "rain gutter regatta" this year, but I'm not certain. I hope we do. This is my son's first year, and my first time assisting. I'll be stepping into the Tiger Cub leader spot in 2015.
